I’ve turned my emergency alert off because I’m such a rebel!

Urgh

Facebook … numerous posts over the last days consisting of:

“EMERGENCY ALERT SWITCHED OFF!!”

“Leaving my emergency alert on so I can reply and tell them to go and fuck themselves!”

“Remember everyone, emergency alerts can and should be switched off by tomorrow!”

“That’s my emergency alert turned off lol”

Why??? What’s so big and clever about turning the alert off? Don’t people realise that most countries have had this for years? Turning it off doesn’t make you Billy Big Bollocks and boasting about it just makes you look stupid!

YABU - I’ve turned mine off and I’m proud of it! Down with the establishment!

YANBU - people are ridiculous

But 15 minute cities aren't a conspiracy theory.

Well yes that was my point. There's conspiracy theorists believing that they're a thing designed to track our movements and keep us in one place.

Needmorelego · 23/04/2023 11:26

I mostly understand that some people will find the alarm going off scary (PTSD, Autism etc) but the actual sound is 10 seconds.
Surely in the case of flood/fire etc the emergency services would be banging loudly on everyone's door loudly say "Everyone needs to leave the building now" - and that would probably be longer than 10 seconds.
Surely you can't avoid everything in life? Sometimes you do need to be made aware something is happening.

HyacinthBookay · 23/04/2023 11:26

Their phone. Their choice.

I nearly jumped out of my skin when the emergency alert went off while I was in NY. I thought there was some sort of attack happening.

Has anybody mentioned adrenochrome yet?

Told someone to "do there own research"?

Severe weather? So that the public become even more terrified of climate change and are whipped into a panic endlessly... living in a state of perpetual fear. Then... they will find it much easier to introduce pay per mile, 15 minute cities, permits to leave your area by car, climate lockdowns.

Meanwhile, back in the real world of sane people....

Well I'm massively against them. I don't want my movement restricted. If that makes me a conspiracy theorist...so be it

Starhead69 · 23/04/2023 11:28

I’ve turned it off because even though I know it is a test this type of thing triggers my anxiety

StrawberryWater · 23/04/2023 11:28

Won’t get it on my old iPhone 6. It’s too old.

ThankmelaterOkay · 23/04/2023 11:28

I’ve turned mine off because it’s pointless. It’s pure fear-mongering. I bought into like a moron during covid, no more. This is all propaganda from the Tories.

Of which there seems to be a lack of on MN sometimes.

These things aren't a conspiracy. Ulez is already here. Pay per mile is not a myth. 15 minute cities are not a conspiracy...councils are pretty open about them.

Needmorelego · 23/04/2023 11:29

@Iwannabeacrocodilehunter in 43 years you've never heard a News Flash on the TV or Radio? This is just the 21st century version.

theblackradiator · 23/04/2023 11:30

I've left mine on just because I'm a nosey git! and like to know what's going on. I don't get many messages etc so il be staring at my phone at 2:59pm waiting to see if it Actually goes ahead Im that sad🤣.
I hope these alerts don't come too often though about things like the weather etc as I can see that anyway by just looking out of the window. suppose can be switched off at a later date if that's the case.

OhhhhhhhhBiscuits · 23/04/2023 11:30

I'm sure some of the naysayers wouldn't be happy if their child was abducted and everyone had turned off the alert that could save their child.

A lot of people in this country are too far down the rabbit hole for help.

sylvandweller · 23/04/2023 11:30

@Comedycook

Are you a car?

AllIeveknewonlyou · 23/04/2023 11:31

@Starhead69 that's fair enough. There isn't anything scary about it though 🤗

LlynTegid · 23/04/2023 10:10

Mine is off because I object to it being on a Sunday afternoon. I value Sundays being different from the rest of the week and want some of the few differences to remain.

I think it is an attempt by this government to distract you from their failings by timing it just before local elections.

You buy tinfoil in bulk? The insanity of some people ...

GoodChat · 23/04/2023 11:31

Severe weather? So that the public become even more terrified of climate change and are whipped into a panic endlessly... living in a state of perpetual fear.

Or to tell you there's a flood warning so you can make the necessary arrangements...

TarasHarp55 · 23/04/2023 11:32

If there was a flood or a fire I presume the alert would be just for that area. It wouldn't go out to the whole country?

GoodChat · 23/04/2023 11:32

TarasHarp55 · 23/04/2023 11:32

Yeah it's area specific.

Robinni · 23/04/2023 11:33

I keep forgetting about it and then see it in news/MN/have a friend tell me etc.

I’ve kept it on. Mainly I want to know what it sounds/looks like so that if there is an actual emergency I can understand and respond appropriately.

I do have a slight fear that a la Greenland (movie), we are all about to be informed the end of the world is nigh and only a chosen few will be called to the bunker 😂😂

There will be some sitting with backpacks ready!

Iwasafool · 23/04/2023 11:33

I turned it off, not really bothered but I wondered how you did it so tried it. I must remember to turn it back on. I wonder if I can figure it out again.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 23/04/2023 11:33

sylvandweller · 23/04/2023 11:23

This thread is full of Onsies- people who join groups like "One Wandsworth" or whatever.

They believe in climate lock downs, think 15 min cities are some kind of evil conspiracy, think vaccines have microchips in, chemtrails and the cycling lobby.

It's literally a cult, a wilfully ignorant, highly embarrassing, cult.

I don't believe any of that, although I am totally against the restrictions of 15 minute cities.

I've turned off the alerts for now but I may turn them back on in the future, depending on how they are used. If it's for serious alerts only then all well and good, if not then I'll leave it off.

Timeforchangeithink · 23/04/2023 11:34

berksandbeyond · 23/04/2023 09:56

People who have turned it off… do you genuinely not want to know?
there was a terrorist attack in the town I live in - I would have liked to have been alerted so I could avoid the area? The alerts can be location specific so it could be used for something like that

I live in a small village in Scotland- we would probably know a terrorist attack was going to happen before it did! Weather warnings - I have windows, tsunami- live over 30 miles from sea but even if I didn't what could I do? ( same goes for being nuked). As such I really dosee the point so have turned mine off.

toomuchlaundry · 23/04/2023 11:34

Do other people in countries that have had this system in place for years get hysterical about it like in this country? For people who have turned it off their phone in the last few days because of this test turned it off when holidaying in countries who have this system, or did you not even think about it then?
