I’ve turned my emergency alert off because I’m such a rebel!

Urgh

Facebook … numerous posts over the last days consisting of:

“EMERGENCY ALERT SWITCHED OFF!!”

“Leaving my emergency alert on so I can reply and tell them to go and fuck themselves!”

“Remember everyone, emergency alerts can and should be switched off by tomorrow!”

“That’s my emergency alert turned off lol”

Why??? What’s so big and clever about turning the alert off? Don’t people realise that most countries have had this for years? Turning it off doesn’t make you Billy Big Bollocks and boasting about it just makes you look stupid!

YABU - I’ve turned mine off and I’m proud of it! Down with the establishment!

YANBU - people are ridiculous

Do you seriously think smoke alarms are there to control us or spy on us?

Damn, I’ll go and check for cameras!

EllandRd · 23/04/2023 11:46

Same, they have no right to add it to my phone without my consent.

If there ever is a real emergency, those who turned it off are going to get a really brutal lesson in Darwinism 😁

Haha, yes this… although I saw an example and it said something like “nuclear attack imminent, urgent action required” and I thought, what action would even help in that situation? Maybe just down a bottle of gin?

The drama around this is mad. maybe they should have just done it and apologised later so people would have less time to be anxious. My American family members think the uk hysteria is bonkers and it’s funny because it’s usually the Americans who are described as dramatic.

berksandbeyond · 23/04/2023 09:48

Yeah people are stupid. Ironically they’ll be the first ones complaining if there is an emergency and they aren’t told.

In other countries the Emergency Alerts are a life saver but what weather conditions do we have that warrants it?

Parker231 · 23/04/2023 11:48

There are some seriously paranoid people on this thread. In Canada we’ve had the alert system for about eight years. It’s very localised with one or two advertised tests a year. The last alert we had was a warning about an unexpected serious snowstorm. A town further south had one about a potential chemical leak with roads closed for emergency vehicles, evacuation for those in the vicinity and warning to close windows and stay indoors. We didn’t get that as the alert are sent only to those in the immediate area.

Its a positive not a negative system. I’m surprised the uk has been so slow at introducing it.

How do you mean "can't be exempted from bonfire night"? Firework displays aren't mandatory, nobody HAS to go to one!?

We do still hear the occasional firework from inside our house but the sound can easily be covered by having the TV on.

Obviously there are occasions when loud distressing noises happen that we have no control over but this phone siren is something that we can turn off and avoid the meltdowns so I have.

pussycatinfluffyslippers · 23/04/2023 09:49

Our phones are old, non-smart and therefore won't receive any foghorns later. Grin

I don't have a phone.

oOiluvfriendsOo · 23/04/2023 11:50

What about the missing or abducted children that are found through these alerts in countries that currently use it.
Mass hysteria over something that could prove very useful.
Keep it on, turn it off, no need to tell the world......

LouisCatorze · 23/04/2023 11:50

Would there really be any point in being advised of an impending nuclear attack, particularly if you were likely to be vaporised on impact because of where you live? Think I'd rather just be getting on with life and then just cease to be.

Can you imagine the panic?

I'm interested to know if you're as nasty as this in real life or just when you're safely behind a keyboard.

Can you reference your sources for this? What children were found due directly to the alert?

Fireworks are outside my home. If I choose to go see them then that's my choice. My home is my safe space.

The ridiculing of autistic people and those with mental illnesses on these threads is appalling.

Nothing has been added to your phone. The alert will be broadcast over a public telecommunications network.

ShimmeringShirts · 23/04/2023 11:52

People are morons, the good news is if an actual emergency happens then those that choose to turn it off will be helping to depopulate an overpopulated world.

Astrabees · 23/04/2023 11:52

I have turned it off for the test. I might turn it on later if I’m satisfied it will only be used appropriately.

User158349890 · 23/04/2023 11:53

What alert is this

Coming to a card shop near you soon!

😆😆

BrutusMcDogface · 23/04/2023 11:55

I need to go shopping later. Might aim to be in the supermarket at 3 to see what transpires 😜

setiously, though, I thought it was a good idea when I was in Florida and got missing child alerts. That sort of thing can’t be bad, right?

If anything was added in through an OS update then you did consent to it. You just didn't bother reading what you were consenting to which is your fault.

Needmorelego · 23/04/2023 11:58

@EllandRd weather in the UK that might require an alert....
Floods
Extreme winds
Landslides
Extreme heat which causes wildfires
Unexpected extreme snow

We do have these things in the UK.

Mardiarse · 23/04/2023 11:58

I’m looking forward to getting mine, see what all the fuss is about.
