I’ve turned my emergency alert off because I’m such a rebel!

Urgh

Facebook … numerous posts over the last days consisting of:

“EMERGENCY ALERT SWITCHED OFF!!”

“Leaving my emergency alert on so I can reply and tell them to go and fuck themselves!”

“Remember everyone, emergency alerts can and should be switched off by tomorrow!”

“That’s my emergency alert turned off lol”

Why??? What’s so big and clever about turning the alert off? Don’t people realise that most countries have had this for years? Turning it off doesn’t make you Billy Big Bollocks and boasting about it just makes you look stupid!

YABU - I’ve turned mine off and I’m proud of it! Down with the establishment!

YANBU - people are ridiculous

People who have turned it off… do you genuinely not want to know?
there was a terrorist attack in the town I live in - I would have liked to have been alerted so I could avoid the area? The alerts can be location specific so it could be used for something like that

I plan to turn it back on tomorrow. I don’t like loud noises, will be driving a lot this weekend, etc. I only want to hear an alert if there’s actually an emergency.

i already get emergency texts so I assume it’ll work.

Bbq1 · 23/04/2023 11:13

For people who are anxious about the 10 sec alert and as a result deactivate it, aren't they going to be a hell of a lot more anxious when there are road closures etc that they weren't expecting? Or environmental risks? Or a terrorist attack close by? Burying your head in the sand doesn't take away the risk or the anxiety Deactivating the alert could just make events a lot more stressful as they are then unexpected.

People are just stupid and paranoid. The same people turning it off are those who believe the 15 minute cities thing is some kind of conspiracy/the government trying to spy on us. Its an alert designed to help us. I don't understand why people are so scared of it.

But 15 minute cities aren't a conspiracy theory.

I’ve gone 43 years without an emergency warning, and I intend to continue through my life without this unnecessary nanny state type alarm.

Are you for real? You sound like some right wing, swivel eyed Brexiteer but I’m sure you aren’t.

KittyAlfred · 23/04/2023 11:05

I’m annoyed at this emergency alert malarkey because of the amount it must have cost to put in place. Schools, hospitals , public services are drowning, libraries closing, bus services being cut, food banks struggling, homeless hostels overflowing - but we can find public funds to tell people when there’s a flooded river 10 miles away ffs

How much do you the ink this has cost? It’s a cell phone tower sends an alert to all connected phones.

do you honestly believe there will be an emergency alert sent to all mobile phones for trivial things that are not life threatening?

HelpMeGetThrough · 23/04/2023 11:15

I will never do what I'm told ever anyway as I do not trust anyone in charge. Plus I don't own a smart phone, so I won't get their ridiculous alarm.

That told em!!!

mrswhiplington · 23/04/2023 11:16

Lots of people saying 'I won't need it where I live'. But what if you are visiting a different part of the country? Camping in the summer and there's a wildlife nearby, maybe in the middle of the night. Or in a hotel in a flood hit area. It might just save your life.

Agree. A scared population is easier to control.

My first thought when it was mentioned it would be used to warn people of extreme weather is to whip up panic with regards to climate change and climate lockdowns will therefore be easier to implement.

StupidFaces · 23/04/2023 09:51

But do you go and boast about it everywhere so everyone can see how ‘ard you are?

That’s the bit annoying me, fine to turn it off but boasting about it is so childish!

You’re doing the same! But different boasting now rebellious you are!!

you gone as far to make a post to boast!

I imagine it'll come with a message
Say the Cumbria shootings
So if you get a message saying there's a man with a gun around the corner shooting people, you'll just walk around the corner because you don't listen to what they say? Confused

Or it'll say something like chemical spill at X, avoid area/stay inside

Yesitisnotthatitbe · 23/04/2023 11:17

Yabu. It's an excuse to ram climate change down our throats. We'll be getting alerts if the temperature rises above 20 degrees eventually

Mine's left on, partly because I want to hear what it's like for future reference and partly because I can't understand why people are so bothered about it! It's being implemented to help, not for some nefarious purpose! I'm in favour of it.

This is exactly why I've left it on. I want to know what it sounds like and how it works.

SchoolTripDrama · 23/04/2023 11:18

YANBU - It's the latest trend bandwagon. Like not having the Covid vaccine 🙄🤦🏼‍♀️

Utterly pathetic. It's for missing children & severe weather for fuck's sake. That's all! 🤣

SchoolTripDrama · 23/04/2023 11:19

berksandbeyond · 23/04/2023 09:48

Yeah people are stupid. Ironically they’ll be the first ones complaining if there is an emergency and they aren’t told.

This!

AllIeveknewonlyou · 23/04/2023 11:19

@Bbq1 so you DO need to turn it off? It doesn't stop after a while?

@SoupDragon queue alert 🤣
Everyone would be scrambling for it then. I check online to see how busy the local supermarket is and think 'hmm, better wait half an hour then"

Exaspa · 23/04/2023 09:52

If the asteroid is going to hit or the aliens about to land/reveal themselves (or more likely the Big Red Button is about to be pushed by whichever mad regime thinks it's a solution to massive overpopulation and our other ills) I'd personally rather not know in advance thanks.... I can't help but wonder what our lovely (not) government is really up to with all this at this particular point in time though....

Oh for goodness sakes it's for missing children and severe weather! Grow up!

Surely it would be the opposite.

It will just say something like ‘Incident warning - avoid X place’ if it’s a terrorist attack.

I’m also hoping it will be used for kidnappings like April Jones.

Sunsetandsmiles · 23/04/2023 11:23

I’m interested to know from all the people turning there’s off…
if it’s used, for example, in the event of a missing child you wouldn’t pick up on that alert and rely on news/social media etc which is a slight delay in getting the message out but would you expect an alert to go out if you were to find yourself in that unfortunate situation?

sylvandweller · 23/04/2023 11:23

This thread is full of Onsies- people who join groups like "One Wandsworth" or whatever.

They believe in climate lock downs, think 15 min cities are some kind of evil conspiracy, think vaccines have microchips in, chemtrails and the cycling lobby.

It's literally a cult, a wilfully ignorant, highly embarrassing, cult.

HelpMeGetThrough · 23/04/2023 11:24

Warning us when the weather is hot and there will be be a run on Ambre Solaire at the supermarket.

I'm not sure @AllAllIeveknewonlyou i think it stops after 10 sec but I initially heard that it would still sound on phones that were switched off.

Severe weather? So that the public become even more terrified of climate change and are whipped into a panic endlessly... living in a state of perpetual fear. Then... they will find it much easier to introduce pay per mile, 15 minute cities, permits to leave your area by car, climate lockdowns.

Why do you feel the need to advertise all this? Do you think it makes you some sort of superior being? If so I have news for you ......... Carry on not doing what you are told and not trusting anyone in charge, but be aware that no-one actually cares. And those of us who live in countries where they've had these alarms for years are all living in a perpetual state of low-level fear - oh, hang on a minute, no we are not.
