I’ve turned my emergency alert off because I’m such a rebel!

Facebook … numerous posts over the last days consisting of:

“EMERGENCY ALERT SWITCHED OFF!!”

“Leaving my emergency alert on so I can reply and tell them to go and fuck themselves!”

“Remember everyone, emergency alerts can and should be switched off by tomorrow!”

“That’s my emergency alert turned off lol”

Why??? What’s so big and clever about turning the alert off? Don’t people realise that most countries have had this for years? Turning it off doesn’t make you Billy Big Bollocks and boasting about it just makes you look stupid!

YABU - I’ve turned mine off and I’m proud of it! Down with the establishment!

YANBU - people are ridiculous

Y'all are a hoot!

(I wish Americans could muster up this level of outrage in response to the monthly active shooter drills in their schools.)

Outrage and queuing. We Brits know where our talents lie.

OP if the Government hadnt behaved the way they have over the last three years people would not be so skeptical about this

Yes, we took precautions to avoid deaths being as high as forecast, the deaths weren't as high as predicted without precautions, therefore the precautions were unnecessary. I don't know why I look both ways before crossing the road: I've never been run over so it seems like wasted effort.

HurdyGurdy19 · 23/04/2023 14:23

Those who are turning it off because of fear/anxiety at unexpected loud noises - are you never going out again? Because when these alerts are actually used, no matter where you are, there are going to be loud alert noises sounding on other people's phones. How are you not going to panic or have an anxiety attack then?

I'd have thought that having your phones on today, when you know exactly when the alert is going to be sounded, and exactly what you need to do when it does, would be a good introduction to it, rather than burying your heads in the sand.

When I checked my phone, mine was already off by default so just left it like that.

Plenty of time though to rush to your window to watch it land......!!

The one and only example I've read here that would have had any real value in the UK is the Grenfell Tower one.

We have no tsunami warning systems here to give advance notice and evacuating somewhere like London to a safe distance is impossible even with them. Roads would gridlock instantly if people were told to stay inside and go upstairs with the result that many would be trapped in cars when it hit.

most people in london could reach a point over 100m high by foot with a 6 hour warning - they just need to be told where to go

TarasHarp55 · 23/04/2023 14:26

GoodChat · 23/04/2023 10:22

If Putin's going to nuke us they won't have time to send an emergency alert Grin

Well to fair they would, it would be the same as the sirens they had in place across the country, the 4 minute warning. As if you could do anything about it then, the same as now.

jessycake · 23/04/2023 14:26

I don't think its big or clever but don't want the alerts atm, its easy to turn them back on if there is a need in the future .

LouisCatorze · 23/04/2023 14:28

most people in london could reach a point over 100m high by foot with a 6 hour warning - they just need to be told where to go But wouldn't most people get in their cars to get there, so roads would be gridlocked virtually immediately?

Okunevo · 23/04/2023 09:51

Can't vote as mine is turned off but not for that reason. I also tried and failed to turn it off for my elderly grandmother, at her request. There are many valid reasons why people have felt the need to turn it off.

Ditto.

Even if it’s as simple as not wanting your phone to make a noise. I jumped out of my skin when I received one during covid,

I can only reduce anxiety inducing situations where I can. At work most people have phones in metal lockers that block the signal. I'm rarely in crowded situations. If it happens it happens, but if it's not my phone then it is less likely to happen.

that is their choice, doesn't stop most people from being able to reach safety on foot, does it

Anonaymoose · 23/04/2023 14:37

There are lots of reasons why someone might not want these alerts. What does it matter if some people turn them off?
I work in a vets and we've had to introduce a protocol for today to reduce the stress for animals. That's fine today but when they go off unexpectedly and an animal gets spooked there's a good chance they could come to harm or a member of staff could get bitten. I'm not a fan, mine will be off permanently. Am sure I'll hear everyone else's anyway!

AndyandTeddyarewavinggoodbye · 23/04/2023 14:45

There have been numerous articles in the press, on the news and on the radio about this (plus too many MN threads to count!)

I don't even live in the UK, but the media coverage has been extensive.

I don't have a "secret" phone, nor do I know of anyone who has (although obviously if I did then it wouldn't actually be secret!).

Surely if you have a secret/second phone because you are in the process of fleeing DV, then you will have seen these reports and made sure that your phone is off? Is it on the rest of the time? What if you got a random spam text/call? Wouldn't that be a dead give away? Wouldn't you be hyper vigilant about anything that might compromise this? Or you would have friends/family who may be aware of or possibly just suspect that you are in this position and would find a way to bring it to your attention.

If you have a secret/second phone because you are having an affair then surely the same would apply? You wouldn't want it buzzing/ringing at any other time, so why would it buzz/ring when this alert happens?

And if you have a second/secret phone because you are cheating, would you not be hyper vigilant about anything that was going to give you away?

😂…and we have a baby on the way

Twins surely?

BadNomad · 23/04/2023 14:58

I'm ready for it!

I'm calling 15:33 for the first "my husband's secret phone" thread.

BadNomad · 23/04/2023 15:00

Make that 15:32 seeing as they set the alarm off one min early.

Very underwhelming.

GoodChat · 23/04/2023 15:00

I haven't had the alarm. My work phone hasn't gone off either. Nor has DP's...

sylvandweller · 23/04/2023 15:01

Well?

JenniferBooth · 23/04/2023 15:01

DHs phone went off at 14.59 A recorded message followed the alarm sound

I've just checked and all my settings are switched on to allow the alerts.
Well that was an anticlimax.

BadNomad · 23/04/2023 15:02

Oh maybe they're doing it in batches? Mine came through at exactly 14:59.

Roussette · 23/04/2023 15:02

I got it, it made me jump. I was rather hoping it wouldn't work, because that would make me 🤣

Trinity65 · 23/04/2023 15:03

Mine went off at 14.59.
All done. No major issue I could see.

sylvandweller · 23/04/2023 15:03

Conspiracy nuts feeling silly now?

Of course people will go by car. For me to get somewhere up hill it would be about 4-5 miles depending which way I went. DH couldn't physically walk that far and neither could I carrying the cat basket.
