I’ve turned my emergency alert off because I’m such a rebel!

Urgh

Facebook … numerous posts over the last days consisting of:

“EMERGENCY ALERT SWITCHED OFF!!”

“Leaving my emergency alert on so I can reply and tell them to go and fuck themselves!”

“Remember everyone, emergency alerts can and should be switched off by tomorrow!”

“That’s my emergency alert turned off lol”

Why??? What’s so big and clever about turning the alert off? Don’t people realise that most countries have had this for years? Turning it off doesn’t make you Billy Big Bollocks and boasting about it just makes you look stupid!

YABU - I’ve turned mine off and I’m proud of it! Down with the establishment!

YANBU - people are ridiculous

Haha! That was brilliantly underwhelming, really enjoyed it. Dead on 3pm, not terrifyingly loud, didn’t make me jump or leave me shaking and sobbing… Marvellous stuff.

murasaki · 23/04/2023 15:12

Dp got his and he is sat about a foot from me, different network.mind, I'm three amd he is Vodafone

I'm Three too! That makes sense. I wonder why they've stopped it.

murasaki · 23/04/2023 15:14

His went off at 2.59. I would still be blissfully unaware were we not in the same place..

Trinity65 · 23/04/2023 15:15

BadNomad · 23/04/2023 15:10

That's interesting. I only got the mediocre alarm sound and a message on my screen. No voice!

If this was a real emergency, I'd be thinking the dishwasher was trying to tell me something was wrong with the pump.

Yep, a voice

An American voice at that. No offence to Americans.

BadNomad · 23/04/2023 15:15

I hate to break it to you, but I'm also Three. In Northern Ireland though, but I'm not sure if there's any relevance to that.

Very strange! Oh well, I've had a good run Grin

Trinity65 · 23/04/2023 15:16

DM down in the Kent countryside hasn't got an alert yet

JenniferBooth · 23/04/2023 15:17

Im Tesco mobile I havent had it.

PortUmber · 23/04/2023 15:18

That was completely underwhelming, but I’m really quite pleased that there is a system in place that will alert me in an emergency.

What a novel idea, that governments globally MAY actually be attempting to protect their citizens…

JenniferBooth · 23/04/2023 15:17

Im Tesco mobile I havent had it.

Also with Tesco mobile, and I did get the alert. I don't think it is relevant, but my name is in the first quarter of the alphabet.

JenniferBooth · 23/04/2023 15:22

Oh hang on a min Have they assumed that we all have phone contracts????!!!!!

murasaki · 23/04/2023 15:23

Three, south london, and surname beginning with A. Still nothing...

And I'm typing on my phone here so clearly I have a signal...

BadNomad · 23/04/2023 15:23

Maybe the conspiracy theorists are right, maybe this is the government's way of population control! RIP to those not chosen to live.

ShowUs · 23/04/2023 15:25

GoodChat · 23/04/2023 15:12

So if it was a test to see if works, is there somewhere that we report if it doesn't?

Or are you who've had it just the chosen ones?

We are the chosen ones.

Good luck for the future, it was nice knowing you.

😁😁

I don’t know why some peoples didn’t go off.
I know some people have quite new phones and it didn’t go off.

I think you’ve nailed it!

The trouble is the conspiracy theorists turned theirs off and now they won’t know if they’re the chosen ones or not.

BadNomad · 23/04/2023 15:27

Some people on another thread got a second alarm! Show-offs 😒

Firstshoes · 23/04/2023 15:28

None of our four phones went off. All on 3 network

My work phone went off at 15.01 but nothing on my personal phone.

Does that mean the bastards have chosen to keep me as a worker bee?! 🐝

BadNomad · 23/04/2023 15:33

Wow I guess so. Your only value is your ability to do your job. When retirement age comes hopefully there will be a network set up to rescue those like you from being sent to "the farm".

DP is on PAYG and his went off...he's cooking and thought it was the oven timer. 😂

PopGoesTheProsecco · 23/04/2023 15:43

PopGoesTheProsecco · 23/04/2023 15:07

Well that was an anticlimax. I put off driving to the shop for a few minutes in case it was really loud. But nothing happened.

Eventually I got it at 3.11 while driving 😂

Heard on the news that there may have been issues with the 3 network.

KittyAlfred · 23/04/2023 15:46

KnickerlessParsons · 23/04/2023 11:08

It wouldn't cost very much. Certainly not nearly enough to save just one of those institutions.

I disagree. There’ll have been years of meetings, research, legal reviews, logistical analysis - thousands of man-hours involved in this, maybe tens of thousands. Not to mention contracts with mobile providers. Millions of £ I think.

Sublime66 · 23/04/2023 16:04

total waste of time and money, most people won’t even get the alert and by the time they do they’ll be dead or won’t have time to escape. Nice idea but wouldn’t bother relying on our government on anything anymore.
Time to look after ourselves and get off the dumb phones, not the opposite

Could be a compatibility issue. https://www.gov.uk/alerts/how-alerts-work#compatible-devices
"Emergency alerts work on:

  • iPhones running iOS 14.5 or later
  • Android phones and tablets running Android 11 or later
If you have an earlier version of Android, you may still be able to receive alerts. To check, search your device settings for ‘emergency alerts’."

I only have Android version 8 and didn't get an alert but my partner did with ios 15.7

How emergency alerts work

Emergency alerts are broadcast from mobile phone masts. Find out if your phone or tablet can receive alerts.
