Waking us everyday at 6.30 am

Springinabundance · 22/04/2023 08:51

We have guests staying for ten days, it’s actually my parents. They go to bed at 9pm and wake at 6.30. They’re in the spare room right next to our room.
My dad wakes and goes to one of the bathrooms very close and brushes his teeth, clears his throat etc.
Dd, 4, is completely overtired and very difficult 😩
She needs 11 hours sleep to be her normal self. I take her up to bed at 7, but with the lighter evenings, she sometimes doesn’t fall asleep until 8.30.
I’ve asked my mum if they could please try to keep quieter in the mornings as Dd needs her sleep etc. She said it’s hard to stay in bed if you’re awake and up (she’s very quiet though tbf)
I don’t know what the solution is here 🤷🏻‍♀️
Dh is exhausted too as Dd is sharing with us, so he often comes down to sleep on the sofa…my dad comes down at 6.30 to make a coffee and open the doors etc
Our usual wake up time during the week is 8ish and weekends a bit later.
Its been another 6.30 start today and already Dd is acting nuts!

@Didimum I can cope, but it’s Dd and her behaviour, I’m desperately trying to get to sleep as early as possible. Her behaviour is very difficult

Why don't you just say all this to your parents again but ensure they get the message? Just because they have a routine at home doesn't mean they have to follow it away and completely trash other people's, especially where young children are involved. It's rude especially when you have mentioned it already.

Flossflower · 22/04/2023 12:55

I think a 10 day stay is far too long regardless of the distance they have travelled.
Why are you not speaking to your Dad about getting up so early?

katepilar · 22/04/2023 11:51

Why are so many people assuming that the GP sleep in the DD's bedroom?

because the op said so

Kvetching · 22/04/2023 13:02

You’ve got one week left, just make the best of it. Seems a bit daft to make a fuss for something finite. Guests make noise.

thevery · 22/04/2023 13:08

@NewNovember I don't think during the working week, when you have to go to work, and get a child to school, that getting up at 6.30 is early at all. I get up at 6 and am at work for half 7, by which point the traffic is chronic, showing that a lot of people are up and about that early. although I appreciate I am in the mugs game that is teaching. A lot of my colleagues get up before me.

Goodread1 · 22/04/2023 13:11

Hi Op

I think in future it's best beneficial for yourself to ensure your parents stay only for shorter visits stays at your place,

Or
And
Stay at a budget hotel or guest house locally or conveniently to get to for them

Win win both ways for yourselves and them.

Just explain the situation what's it like with them

Springinabundance · 22/04/2023 13:12

@rumbusiness ? I drive straight to work afterwards, I don’t get to come back home.

Springinabundance · 22/04/2023 13:13

@PrettyMaybug 😂No one can lie in until 8 🤷🏻‍♀️🙈
You’d be really shocked at my neighbours children who go to bed late in summer and sleep in until almost 11 in the morning, it’s pretty standard where we are

Oops sorry I meant to say what it's like with your young daughter being affected by early wake ups and how it effects her,

Obviously say it non -judgemental way so they are not pissed off ect

Springinabundance · 22/04/2023 13:12

It's a 2 minute drive. How can it possibly be quicker to get your daughter in and out of the car, find a parking space, park at school, etc. Just insane. Driving for TWO MINUTES. Fucking hell.

Delatron · 22/04/2023 13:16

What my parents have started doing is having a few nights in a hotel to break up the journey, then they stay with us for 3/4 days max. Suggest this next time.

Doesn't "early" depend on your routine and when you need to be at work or school, though?

I wouldn't want to get up at 6.30am as I don't need to be at work until 8.45am, and it doesn't take me over two hours to get up, dressed and out of the door.

Lots of schools and jobs don't start until 9am or later, so why would anyone choose to be up over two hours earlier than that when they don't have to be?

Springinabundance · 22/04/2023 13:21

@rumbusiness What are you on about? It’s obviously not 2 minutes to walk there, so I can’t walk her there then walk her back then get in my car and drive to work. It’s fine to get her in the car and drop her then go straight to work, ok?

But OP isn't just driving for two minutes, is she?

She has to drive her DD to school and then get herself to work 15 minutes later. A five minute drive could easily be a much longer walk depending on the routes involved.

I do a drive daily that's only 2-3 minutes by car, but on foot it would take me a good 45 minutes and just don't have the time for that. I assume OP is the same.

Anyway, she didn't ask for anyone's opinions on her journey to school/work, so I'm not sure why everyone feels the need to pull her up on it Hmm

@Beetrootlover82 No, around 8ish in the week too as they walk the dog

She said she drops her daughter off at 9.15am and then does a 5 minute drive to work, to arrive at 9.30.

Obviously if it's two minutes drive you can walk to school, walk back and then drive to work.

I suspect people are pulling her up on it because it's insane that people do this.

No problem 🥰

Ignore the critics - unless they know exactly where you live and your routes to school and work, they have no business telling you you should be walking! 🙈

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 22/04/2023 13:25

No, it's not "obvious" at all 🙄

You don't know where OP lives, what the routes are like or how safe the walk is - so you have no business making judgements like that.

It's also got nothing to do with the OP.

Whichnumbers · 22/04/2023 13:27

black out blinds for 4 year old and ear plugs for you

Springinabundance · 22/04/2023 13:27

@rumbusiness Is this serious? 😂It takes longer to walk than 2 minutes, I don’t want to do the walk there and back, adding time onto my morning and getting sweaty before work (hot where I am) so I basically drop my daughter at school on the way to work 👍

OP posts:
2Rebecca · 22/04/2023 13:35

Just ask them to please not get out of bed until 7.30 as it's waking your daughter up and just stay in bed and read until then and leave teeth brushing etc until later. If they won't do that ask them to stay at a local hotel next time so they can get up when they want

I genuinely can't imagine telling my parents (or any guest) that they have to stay in bed and not brush their teeth until a certain time - it's so inhospitable.

Hugasauras · 22/04/2023 13:46

Blackout blinds and white noise. Cover all manner of sins. White noise at a decent volume will cover sounds of people moving around a bit. We've always used it with our two and I use it myself now! Bloc-out blinds are good, they give total darkness, not even light round the sides of the window.
