That most people don't realise quite how awful the impact of overturning Roe v Wade is in the US?

Obviously, most people know that forced birth in itself is an awful thing, but the more I learn about effects, the more horrifying it is. On top of the individual impact there is:

And it goes on...

Aha! Autistic here. Not always good at picking up the subtext, so you can safely blame me for that one :D

No problem at all, completely my fault 😀

i just expect everyone to know what I mean

RufustheSpecuIatingreindeer · 22/04/2023 19:53

My boy (i have two but one is in no danger of impregnating a woman) has been told eleventy billion times that if he doesn’t want a baby he should always wear a condom

Botw1 · 22/04/2023 19:55

@RufustheSpecuIatingreindeer

I've told mine if he doesn't use a condom his willy will fall off

RufustheSpecuIatingreindeer · 22/04/2023 19:57

he actually coaches 6/7 year old football and apparently its quite put him off having children

SleepHygieneHelp · 22/04/2023 20:32

@GeoffGiraffe I'm so sorry you had to go through that. What a horrendous experience. There is no way you should have had to have an inquest in that scenario. I hope you have managed to find healing since this

Botw1 · 22/04/2023 20:41

@RufustheSpecuIatingreindeer

Yeah I made mine babysit his wee cousins

That does the trick lol

Did anyone see the recent panorama on crisis pregnancy centres? These American anti-choice groups are trying to slowly get their claws in the UK.

RufustheSpecuIatingreindeer · 22/04/2023 21:18

before andor i would have thought that it wouldn’t happen in the uk

following sleephygiene post I’m not sure of that at all

How is Biden able to overturn the ruling which protects women’s sports but won’t overturn this ruling? I dont get it.

It makes it pretty clear where his priorities lie.

I do think it’s terrible, don’t get me wrong, but the US is a democracy, they can change this if they want to, it’s up to people there to fight for it and they have the freedom to do so. I am more concerned for women in countries where abortion is illegal but they have no chance to change it, places where women have no voice.

They actually can’t though, because it’s decided by the Supreme Court which is overloaded with mega-conservative Republican justices- three of whom were put there by Trump whose election campaign was funded in no small part by donations from pro life lobby groups- who have their place on the court until they resign or die.

That’s why I’m pissed off with Ruth Bader Ginsburg. For all the amazing things she did for women, it was pure hubris that stopped her stepping down from her place at a time when Barack Obama could have nominated a replacement and kept the court balanced. But she stayed, and then died when Trump was in the White House.

I’m fucked off with the Democrats in general because instead of enshrining Roe V Wade in law in a robust, indestructible way, they preferred to keep it fragile and use it as a vote-baiting carrot to dangle -“vote for us, or those nasty Republicans will overturn Roe V Wade!!”. And then that was exactly what happened.

GobbieMaggie · 22/04/2023 21:54

To be honest, it’s for the Americans to sort out : we have enough problems of our own.

I find it horrendous. I was so shocked when I realised ectopic pregnancy is included in the rules. a termination in that case can be the difference between life or death for the woman!

But ectopic pregnancy is not included. All states that currently ban abortion do not classify the medical procedure to remove an ectopic pregnancy as an abortion. It’s a myth spun by certain groups that having surgery or methotrexate for an ectopic is illegal.

But that’s the whole point of the Supreme Court overturning it! Instead of a bunch of middle-aged wealthy lawyers (some male ones too) making the decision that affects millions, each state (I.e the voters in that state - including me) will decide for themselves. Our state already permits abortion up to a much later stage than European countries do, and without needing a doctor yo agree to it. You want an abortion, you can have one. No questions asked. I live very close to the border with the next state where abortion is perfectly legal for the whole pregnancy.

Oh that's alright then. Maybe the woman will just nearly die from and be made infertile by sepsis instead.

Another woman has come forward with the harrowing details of how the Supreme Court's decision four months ago to overturn Roe v. Wade put her life in danger.

That does sound a bit "I'm all right Jack". Would you be as sanguine about it if you lived in a state where the vote was against allowing abortion, you desperately needed one but had no hope in hell of travelling to a state that allows it?

We still have child marriage in Scotland and Northern Ireland and we only outlawed it England and Wales in 2022.

There is a bit of a difference between a 16 year old and a 12 year old.

You cannot get out of a rape charge by marrying your victim in the UK.

But that is a different although related topic.

Echobelly · 23/04/2023 15:39

@GobbieMaggie - yes it is mostly the States' problem, but as I said earlier, although it's unlikely to happen here in my opinion, it's not impossible and we should be vigilant, especially if the tories get in again. There are wealthy right-wing extremist Christian groups who are keen to get a foothold and if a weak and wobbly Tory gov is returned, they won't be averse to pushing unpopular and extreme policies, especially if funded by certain parties who want them to make it happen. A bit tinfoil hat, I know, but we need to be alert to the possibility.

It's the same in Chile, and Malta.

If you have a cardiac arrest and you are pregnant beyond 20 weeks then the medical teams has about 4 mins to resuscitate you before they perform a C-section to give your child a chance at life.

Resus does continue.

I dread to think what happens atm in the US, thankfully cardiac arrest is rare in pregnancy,

They do that everywhere, but it is not to give the baby a chance of life, it's the other way around. Your chances of being resuscitated go down massively when you're pregnant. If they don't succeed in bringing you back in 4 minutes, getting the baby out is your only chance of surviving, regardless whether the baby survives or not. It's called a perimortem cesarean section. Midwife here.

Well as long as it can't negatively impact you...

Waters broke at 16 weeks, got to hemmorage her miscarriage in the toilets at hairdressers, Florida. Nurse offered to pray for her. Nice. Not.
