I don't believe we've been to the moon and SpaceXs failure further convinces me.

I know I've posted this before and the majority of you think I'm batty, but I don't think we've landed on the moon.

3 billion USD, a giant leap in technological advances and yet it can't even launch.

I believe in the ISS, I mean I'm not a crackpot, but no, I don't believe the images.

😆

csigeek · 22/04/2023 17:23

Yeah, you’re batshit. But you do you.

Peapodburgundybouquet · 22/04/2023 18:07

I’ll be sure to tell my cousin, who is a physicist working with NASA, that his life is a farce, and he’s not fooling anyone. 😆

@SerendipityJane

Mention of Concorde reminds me that some NASA engineers considered it's engineering a much tougher gig (bearing in mind Concorde was designed to and did fly many times). The air intakes to the engines in particular. Which I think are still classified.

You’re right to some extent about the intakes - the details were almost literally kept under wraps for a long as possible (the Soviets were keen to get a look ) but the design and working details has been out in the public domain for decades now.

It's only now that supersonic passenger travel is being mooted again ... although I like the idea of hypersonic travel. What a way to see the flat earth, eh ?

The 9/11 post upthread is really quite something.

I don’t believe in the 9/11 conspiracies but most of them aren’t instantaneously dismissible.

Arguing that there weren’t any planes though, despite (at least) tens of thousands of ordinary people having witnessed it… it’s almost hilariously stupid, but given the massive loss of life I think it actually crosses over to evil and deranged.

Agreed..

Trouble is there are some out there, seemingly utterly unlatched from the real world and reality when it comes to 9/11, who will justify that sort of comment by claiming there was zero loss of life (Towers evacuated, aircraft either CGI or unmanned drones, you know how it goes….)

Sadly there has always been a bit of a conspiracy industry and there is a lot of money to be made by the unscrupulous by perpetuating this sort of nonsense.

It is very very odd. Moon landing deniers, Flat Earthers, 9/11, Lizard Rulers etc all seem to desperately cling to their belief in the face of all the irrefutable evidence.

I often wonder why? What does their belief serve? They don't WANT to lose that belief - why? What is there to be afraid of?

They paint themselves into a corner and can't seem to get out.

I do feel sorry for them, but also annoyed because they negate people's life achievements and happily trash others reputations.

I love posts like this, 'my mates, dog' this is the internet, we are all anonymous . You and I can be whomever we say we are.

The vast majority of people posting on MN have no deeper knowledge than I do but get a kick out of being disparaging

There's a ton of research into why some people are attracted to conspiracy theories, and why they're so hard to counter. Some of it relates to feeling afraid or out of control when horrifying things happen (cough, Covid-19, cough), so an answer about why something is happening is comforting, even if it's wrong.

It also tends to align with people's previous beliefs and leanings - so if you are already mistrusting of government/scientists/journalists then you're more likely to believe conspiracy theories that depend on that. There's also a sense of community or kinship with your fellow conspiracy theorists, plus a feeling of getting one over on the 'sheeple' who don't believe.

There's lots of other stuff, including overlaps with conspiracy theorists and people that believe in alternative medicine, etc. It's pretty fascinating! Facts and debunking don't seem to help. I've met Buzz Aldrin, lovely chap, and he's been to the moon! He let my then toddler hold a piece of moonrock. She doesn't remember but for me it was an amazing experience

Mybumlooksbig · 23/04/2023 22:14

Yanbu. I agree with you.
The moon landing was fake, if it was all real and with the advances in technology we would be there every day wouldn't we...no way we landed on the moon in the 60s and it would have been impossible to be televised.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 23/04/2023 22:40

And the point of being on the moon every day is?

Yes, it’s the combination of ignorance and arrogance that is so obvious.

People with knowledge and intelligence tend to understand that the more we know, the more we know we don’t know.

mustgetoffmn · 23/04/2023 22:49

Why don’t you believe it? I’m sympathetic I find it hard to see so much money going into space when we are not addressing the mess we are making of our own planet. It’s almost as though there’s an endeavour to find somewhere to bake out to. But I know nothing

It's certainly been the case on this thread.

For goodness sake, not again! Unfortunately for you, your view is only shared by a small amount of people. While I’m all for having your own opinion, please please please do some more research before saying rubbish like this. Pretty sure that tin foil hat you like to wear is stopping you thinking properly!

cakewench · 24/04/2023 00:01

Three different countries have landed spacecraft on the moon. The reflectors they’ve placed up there are a basis for what created gps.

They aren’t clambering to go back because there is no monetary incentive to do so. The space race was very much a competition and once they achieved the result, interest was lost.

Do some research into the retroreflectors up there if you haven’t heard of them and are feeling like learning something.

Why would we be there every day? We haven't advanced enough in technology to create a breathable atmosphere around the moon, and there isn't really anything there to attract investment. How do you account for the fact that the Russians, who were watching very closely indeed and had every motivation to proclaim it to the world if there was any evidence at all that it was fake, have consistently accepted that it did happen?

Do explain what technical barriers you believe there were to the landing being televised.

BMW6 · 24/04/2023 07:57

The OP will not reply to the many posts asking why the Soviets never once claimed USA was faking the manned lunar landings😆

The silence on this is very telling

Nor do any of those who agree with OP manage to get to grips with that one. Yet they'll turn up on the next thread stoutly denying the moon landings, and disappear again when that question gets asked. And again and again. It would be fascinating to know how they reconcile it within their own heads, if indeed they do.

Sorry to be pedantic but alternative medicine is a real thing not a fantasy. Whether you go for it or not.

Alternative medicine is a "thing" like homeopathy is a thing.

That thing being total bollocks.

Alternative medicine that works is ... medicine.

I bet any cheerleader for alternative medicine would find a reason to to try and fly in an aeroplane designed with "alternative physics".
