I'm so bored. I literally go to work, come home, make tea then sit watching tv all night. I spend the most of the weekend cleaning and shopping

What can I do thats for me? My DP has football and the gym and I've got nothing. I'm not really good at anything, don't have any talents or passions but I really want one!

Please help me find something that's just for me that will make me feel like I'm alive for reasons other than working and cleaning, even just for a little while

Volunteering, I found volunteering as a brownie leader really fulfilling. You planned and ran your own sessions which was really fun

Join up with your local women’s rights network (WRN) branch and get out and meet some funny clever determined feminists

I can't see where on the website you find out about local groups?

SpringIntoChaos · 18/04/2023 19:42

Have you thought about joining MeetUp? I was you a few years ago...minus the DH/DP, so doubly bored and lonely 😔 I. Literally went to work and came home...I was stagnating! It was really awful actually 😢

I joined a few local groups on MeetUp and have transformed my social life!! I have events lined up for months ahead...walks, theatre trips, cinema, day trips, meals out...I've even got a weekend away in Dublin booked in for October half term!

Download the app and join a few local groups. You'll be out and about in no time at all and make lots of really great, likeminded friends along the way 😍 (it's NOT a dating app btw, it's a social meet up app and the groups are very well organised and run 👍).

If there's some kind of adult education centre nearby offering nightclasses you could browse the website and see what they are offering. There might be something on there you've never even heard of which catches your interest.
One of my friends did that 20 years ago and went along to a beginners' stained glass class. She still does it now as she loved it.
I started a watercolour painting class after thinking I fancied doing something arty and had a flick through a brochure from a local centre. Love it - I'm crap - but nobody cares and the others are lovely. I'm the youngest person by miles (I'm mid 40s) and they've really taken me to heart.

Talkingtomyhouseplants · 18/04/2023 19:51

This is the exact reason I go to the gym. I didn’t love it at first but now I feel twitchy if I have more than one day off in a row. It gives you something to break up that work-dinner-veg out cycle. My fiancé and I are also trying to do date nights some week nights to spice it up, or we play games

Ilovelurchers · 18/04/2023 20:00

My three hobbies are:

Reading - I read most types of fiction, and get things from charity shops, passed on by friends and family etc, so it's cheap/free.

Cooking and especially baking - got into it with my daughter who is a keen baker and more skilled than me, but I now also enjoy it on my own, even just easy recipes - made some scones tonight for example which are the easiest things in the world, but I really enjoyed it. Will sometimes attempt something more complex at the weekend for example.

Gardening - I recently got an allotment plot and I absolutely love it - I spend lots of time reading up about what to grown etc, keeping records, as well as the actual gardening.

After my friends and family these are the things I am most grateful for in my life, simple as they are.

Go for it OP! Good luck.

I'll swap! It's 8 o clock and I'm having a quick break before getting back to work. Got in at 6, made tea, worked on my yr10 lessons and now reading essays for an hour.

If I had more free time in the evenings, I would run more; read more; play more instruments. Working severely curtails my chance to have have hobbies.

When I was off over Easter, evenings were spent doing the above and it was gorgeous.

HelloDaisy · 18/04/2023 20:14

Walking? I walk with a friend several times a week and find it really good for my head. We walk, talk, laugh and rant!

Mogginsthemog · 18/04/2023 20:18

I do an exercise class which is great. Ppl are friendly.
In the past I've done beginners badminton. I know my local leisure centre has an easy going netball meet up.
Anyway , I've recently bought a sewing machine and this thread has persuaded me to go to a class to learn the basics and get going with it.

Prescottdanni123 · 18/04/2023 20:18

Read a book
Do crafts/learn a craft
Learn a language- so many good free apps out there
Go walking in the evenings
Write about something you are interested in - fiction or none fiction
Draw something
Pamper session
Do a photo a day challenge - can last for a week/ a month/ a year - lots of lists online
Have you had hobbies in the past you can pick up again? Or is there a hobby you fancy having a go at starting?
Any local clubs that have caught your eye? Libraries usually have lists if you don't know which ones are in your area.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 18/04/2023 20:20

Between kids and work, I don’t have a lot of time to myself.

Last year i started learning a language on Duolingo, and also have been doing C25k for the second time this year. I think it’s really important to have an outlet.

ShowUs · 18/04/2023 20:31

What job do you do?

My job (SEND teacher) is so mentally and physically draining that I love my evenings relaxing at home.

Maybe you’re bored with your job rather than your free time.

I do think some sort of hobby is good for everyone.

They say you should have one that keeps you fit (gym, gardening, walking etc).
And one that is creative (painting, pottery, knitting etc).

I love a good book too.

There's so many activities and hobbies to try OP. You just need to check what's nearby and what vaguely interests you, then go along.
Over the years, I've done the following:

  • night classes in subjects that interested me
  • learnt how to salsa, line dance, ballroom dance
  • become involved in the local residents association and community council
  • volunteered at the local hospital and old folk's home
  • completed an archery course
  • completed a beginner's golf course
  • gardening
  • yoga
  • painting
  • written three books
  • researched my family tree
  • visited smaller, quirky museums
  • geocaching
  • feminist group & menopause group
winelove · 18/04/2023 20:39

Gardening - growing from seed. Cheap to start.
Seeds that are good for sowing now are Strawflower and Zinnias.
Look at Zoe Woodward on Instagram or The Floral Project.
I have started from March an am loving it.
Beware I have spent a fortune on seeds, it is addictive.
I have Sweetpeas, Cosmos, Dhalia's Zinnias, Snap dragons, Ammi's and more growing, not sure where I am going to put them all.

Lifeomars · 18/04/2023 20:52

I can identify with you, I do not have any discernable talents, I have friends who can dance, craft, maintain an allotment, do upholstery, sing in a choir and it makes me feel so useless! However I do love reading and get through about 3 books a week and they are a mix of popular fiction, history, biography and literature, I have also joined a writing group as the process of creating via language fascinates me. I have tried gardening, am ok at it but do not really enjoy it, belly dancing (was laughably crap), used to swim a lot and have been thinking about taking that up again. It is is about trying stuff and seeing what you might like. You might hate reading, and that's fine, I haven't been really grabbed by most of the stuff I have tried, but books, oh I just love them. I love art and there are loads of really good documentaries on YouTube so rather than watching just anything to relax I watch these and feel that I am learning stuff, I can't draw or paint but that doesn't stop me from appreciating the work of those who do

S72 · 18/04/2023 20:59

Volunteer? Most scout groups would love an extra pair of hands. Then slowly you could help out at camps/days out/county activities. Always something going on!

Parmavioletsweets · 18/04/2023 21:05

Start growing vegetables or flowers. It's the perfect time of year to start.

Starlia · 18/04/2023 21:22

I would do something foe my physical health, something for my brain/mental health and something for my social health. These are all key to leading a long and healthy life.
I have taken up Pilates and do it twice or three times a week. I am by far the worst in the class but it makes me feel amazing. Low impact but great for improving strength and balance.
For my brain I read and listen to podcasts. There is a subject and genre for everything and I have learned so much about the world, other places, politics, true crime and heaps more.
For my social health I block out my lunch time at work every Friday and use it to reconnect with old work friends or current colleagues or anyone really. I invite them out for lunch. I'm an introvert and it's been difficult at times but I recognise it's good for me. And it's good to have friendships, they don't need to be in my pockets all the time. But I enjoy catching up with them every so often - and it could lead to more meet ups or new hobbies or interests.
The key is, what do you enjoy and what are you willing to try?

Leftbutcameback · 18/04/2023 21:27

Have a list of different things to try. I’ve tried all sorts of classes, sports, activities etc and had fun with most of them. Found a couple I wanted to keep doing too. Lots of places have first class free, or taster sessions.

Ive tried (amongst other things and over a long period of time): fending, judo, salsa, Pilates, glass bead turning, macrame, languages, evening classes in various things, and most of those haven’t stuck but I still had fun

Leftbutcameback · 18/04/2023 21:28

Also lots of stuff is online now, but if you can try it in person, much easier to get absorbed in what you’re doing

KateofGhent · 18/04/2023 21:30

I will second joining a choir. or a running club, or running alone? Or the theatre, there's nowhere like it.

howrudeforme · 18/04/2023 21:31

I was really spiralling downwards. Was diagnosed with appalling high blood pressure and kicked me into action.

I’ve taken up Padel tennis (cross between tennis and squash - but backwards). and I’m addicted. Not brilliant at it, but addicted.

But I do have to force myself as there’s always a reason not to go. It’s fine winders for my mental health as well.

try a few things out. You might like, you might not.

poster up thread mentioned you might be stagnating in your job… could be that.
