To have nothing except work and sitting on the sofa?

overthinkersanonnymus · 17/04/2023 23:16

I'm so bored. I literally go to work, come home, make tea then sit watching tv all night. I spend the most of the weekend cleaning and shopping

What can I do thats for me? My DP has football and the gym and I've got nothing. I'm not really good at anything, don't have any talents or passions but I really want one!

Please help me find something that's just for me that will make me feel like I'm alive for reasons other than working and cleaning, even just for a little while

I don't really do anything either. I'm ok with that.

IHateFlies · 18/04/2023 06:49

Join an exercise class
Join a social group
Sign up to a course either online or locally
Join a book group
Do some chores in the evenings along with your dp, arrange a supermarket delivery and free up your weekends to go on day trips, weekends away and meet friends (why is your weekend spent cleaning and shopping?)

Look on meetup.com, your local college, open university free courses, your local library, corsera, Google

Do you have friends. If you do plan a night out it would do you the world of good.

Volunteer? There are so many organisations to get involved with, depending on your interests/time available/skills - it sounds cliched but I find it makes my week more worthwhile to know that I’ve helped someone else (and I enjoy it as well!).
https://www.ncvo.org.uk/get-involved/volunteering/want-to-volunteer/#/

Such a lovely idea!!

Velvian · 18/04/2023 07:06

Join a running group. Mine does group C25K every few months and has a couple of other meet ups during the week. I'm not 'a runner' at all, but I go out 2 or 3 times a week and really enjoy it.

It has meant I've met a lot more people where I live. I would really recommend it.

PurpleParrotfish · 18/04/2023 07:11

It’s spring! Go for short walks round your neighbourhood (or longer ones further afield). Is there a bluebell wood anywhere near you?

Take photos on your phone of the spring flowers and baby leaves, catkins etc. coming out on the trees. It makes you stop and properly look at things. If you want to identify what you’ve seen you could always start a thread on here to ask people!

CleaningOutMyCloset · 18/04/2023 07:12

This was me, my dh works shifts so goes to bed just after I finish work.

I've just started a floristry course, I wouldn't say I was actually interested in flowers massively, but I do appreciate a good bunch of daffs. But this course has been really enjoyable and the house always has fresh flowers once a week. There are 7 of us in total and a lovely, eclectic bunch of ladies.

It's also spurred me on to take up horse riding twice a week too. It was something I did as a child and enjoyed. I now have a private lesson during the week and a group one on a weekend. It's exercise and I get out in the fresh air.

I actually now enjoy my down time and don't feel guilty that I'm sat on my arse every evening.

GreenMarigold · 18/04/2023 07:20

I do diamond painting in the winter. It takes no artistic ability which is why it appeals to me! I find it quite satisfying and it keeps my hands busy so I don’t snack!

In the summer I prefer to get out for some exercise. If you’ve always liked the idea of running but think you can’t do it, you really can! Many people find couch to 5k helps.

If running doesn’t appeal, then maybe some walking or other activity. You can use meetup app to find things going on in your area.

PictureThis is a fab plant identifier app. It costs a little bit but I use it all the time!

I have learnt loads about plants and trees from it and it also helps with gardening, if you have a garden and are as clueless as I am!

Beautifulsunflowers · 18/04/2023 07:25

Make one night a week a tv free night.
Then it’s deciding what to do that night.

some ideas

  • go for a walk by yourself, with a friend or dp. Stop off on the way back for a drink or an ice cream.
  • start to research your family tree
  • go swimming or do an exercise class - I did this at my local leisure centre and could just pay for the class but now I’ve joined
  • bake a cake for work the next day, get creative with the decoration.
  • join a book club
  • have a walk around hobbycraft and see if there’s any new crafts you would like to try
  • start a jigsaw puzzle
  • do a big batch cook for the feeezer with music on
  • arrange a meet up with friends or plan for a big summer bbq
  • have a long bath with candles and a good book
  • date night with dp
maddening · 18/04/2023 07:26

Do your cleaning and shopping on weekday evenings and.free.up your weekends?

maddening · 18/04/2023 07:29

Buy.i like beautifulsunflowers suggestions so
2 nights sort cleaning and shopping
2.evening fitness classes with a swim after
1 coffee catch up with friend or date night with dp

Weekends are your own as shopping and cleaning done.

GeorgiaGirl52 · 18/04/2023 07:32

Adopt a dog. Get a smallishh one to snuggle with on the sofa while your DH is gone, but big enough to go on walks with you. You will have a friend and likely make other (human) friends.

BelindaMelinda · 18/04/2023 07:38

There are so many suggestions on here op but realistically no one can help you because it's down to you. There are really fun sounding suggestions that I know would be my idea of hell (such as learning to play guitar or doing floristry).

What do you like to do or have an interest in? Do you enjoy reading? The great outdoors? Swimming? Singing? Debating? Crochet? Gardening?

It just starts with you thinking about what you enjoy and then searching Facebook/Google for local groups.

I took up roller skating last year and now I go once a week to an adults only indoor session. I think my family thought I was going through a crisis because it seemed like such an odd choice 😂 But I used to LOVE roller skating as a young child and even though I hadn't skated in over 20 years, I still do!

Peapodburgundybouquet · 18/04/2023 07:47

Start doing something physically active. You sound very sedentary. Could you start the gym? Or some classes? Or a team sport? It’ll give you more energy to do other things.

PurpleParrotfish · 18/04/2023 07:51

As @BelindaMelinda says, probably only a tiny minority of these suggestions will appeal to OP. But it’s nice having them all in one place as maybe someone else will read the thread and decide to try floristry or roller skating!

NerrSnerr · 18/04/2023 07:59

What kind of things have you ever liked to do? People saying 'what you need to do is' are not really helpful.

My hobbies over the years have been running, forestry, diving, archery, knitting, sewing and martial arts. I am now a member of a gym and do classes as it fits well with my life. My hobbies may not appeal and you need to think what might make you happy.

Does your partner share the shopping and cleaning? If he doesn't then he should start, even if he has hobbies it doesn't exclude him from doing his share.

Ikeepbuyinganimals · 18/04/2023 08:30

Volunteering - something like Scouts I'd so varied you'll be doing something different every week. Through my volunteering and trying the activities the kids do, I've discovered hobbies that I'm good at and really interest me, to add to my volunteering. And you don't have to vlunteer with the kids if that isn't for you, there are other supporting roles.

CampsieGlamper · 18/04/2023 08:39

Gardening is good. Even if you don't have an outside garden, flowers inside, small trays of cress, or growing things from seed.

Reading - oh yes.

Look online too for free courses in things you are interested in.

The joy of jigsaws.

Handicrafts. Icing cakes, even cheap and basic cakes. Fancy doodads and frilly twirlie bits.

burnoutbabe · 18/04/2023 08:57

Play computer games?

Only downside is your dp will be advised to leave you by sone mumsnetters!

BiddyPop · 18/04/2023 08:57

I do a yoga class on a Thursday night and I am a Cub Scout leader on a Saturday. The rest of the time, I am pretty much as you describe.

I frequently miss yoga getting home late from work.

But Cubs is nice because it is chaos, the kids are a real mix but there's always something interesting or funny, we often get outdoors because we meet on Saturdays and I spend the summer season (May/June and Sept/Oct) "messing about in boats", as well as get a camping trip in tents.

overthinkersanonnymus · 18/04/2023 10:25

Thank you so much to everyone for your ideas!

I'm off work today so I'm going to pop to the garden center then go and get some wool to start a bit of knitting to keep my hands busy

I love the idea of a running club but I'm so shite at physical activity 😂😂

Hopefully those of you who said you feel the same will have had some ideas from this thread too

If you’re unfit, start couch to 5k. I did this 18 months ago, now run 5 times a week, read about running, watch YouTube vids about running, plan my long run routes, stalk people on Strava, obsess about training plans, make new running playlists, people buy me running related Xmas and birthday presents. I’m not even much good at it! It’s great having a hobby though! And my kid thinks I’m amazing 😊

Me too!! I have never done any exercise till now!! I am the fattest and slowest runner you'll ever meet but I'm so proud of myself

Do the C25K first and then go to your local parkrun. You'll see others wearing their running group tops which will give you an idea of what groups are nearby

There is a c25k FB group which is really supportive.
