DH left kids in car

eatsleepeatrepeat · 17/04/2023 20:41

DH was driving back from kids club with DC1&2 (7mo & 2yrs) and stopped at the petrol station for a couple of microwave meals & wine for our dinner tonight, leaving both the kids in the locked car. When he came home I presumed he'd taken them in with him, but then I realised he didn't have the double buggy, so he eventually admitted he left them in the car briefly. He said he had eyes on the car the whole time he was in the shop.

We didn't really have an argument over it but I would just never have left them and was horrified he did, if only for a few mins. Am I overreacting?

What did you do when you had two under two?

So you risked carrying her across a bust petrol forecourt?

How neglectful and risky!

You pay at pump. And go to a different shop where you can take the kids in safely. Garage forecourts aren't for kids.

DiamondLine · 17/04/2023 21:35

Much safer to leave them in the car than get them out on a petrol forecourt IMO

Isthisexpected · 17/04/2023 21:36

So he went shopping and left them in the car basically? I'd never have even considered this.

nomoredriving · 17/04/2023 21:34

@moonspiral give over, how can anyone be that highly strung!!

It's clearly caused tension between OP and her DH so next time just go to a different shop

userxx · 17/04/2023 21:36

No harm done. Was it a nice wine ?

nomoredriving · 17/04/2023 21:37

@moonspiral how many children are killed on cars on petrol forecourt's.....

Jesus

How do people live lives with this level of fear!

nomoredriving · 17/04/2023 21:40

@moonspiral OP admitted in her second of two posts she though she was over reacting...

Two posts, read them!

FFS!

At least OP knows she's OOO!

nakeklak · 17/04/2023 21:40

I do this all the time

Yeah he was in Aldi for 45 mins!

🙄

I do honestly think if anyone was desperate / stupid enough to break into my car and steal it with my kids in, they wouldn't get more than 5 minutes down the road before they'd be begging me to take the kids back.

This made me giggle.

Seriously though people have been leaving their kids in the car for decades while they legged it into the petrol stations.

I've never once seen anyone take a kid out of a car in a petrol station;some idiot once drove into our parked car in a petrol station forecourt;our was parked next to a Petrol pump having just fuelled up;it's definitely not a safe place to be getting a pushchair and 2 kids out.

Part of her questioned it though. So it's not unreasonable to think other people would be uncomfortable.

moonspiral · 17/04/2023 21:14

Sorry but both options are crap. Did you really need a microwave meal and wine? Did you not have any other food in?

Oh my goodness. This made my night.

moonspiral · 17/04/2023 21:32

They can but they shouldn't be taking the kids and leaving them in the car or taking them across the forecourt.

Why not.?

Matchymatchylemonscratchy · 17/04/2023 21:44

OP do you seriously get them out every time you pay for petrol?!

Qlol, yeah, he parked in the multi storey at Westfield and spent 5 hours indulging in some retail therapy....

shakeitoffsis · 17/04/2023 21:45

You're massively overreacting

Growlybear83 · 17/04/2023 21:30

I never left my daughter in the car when I paid for petrol or popped into a shop when she was little, whether or not I could see her all the time. It's just not worth the risk.

What risk?

FrenchandSaunders · 17/04/2023 21:46

i have literally never seen anyone get tiny kids out of a car, into a buggy to pay for petrol or pop in a petrol station shop.

moonspiral · 17/04/2023 21:46

00100001 · 17/04/2023 21:44

Why not.?

You don't leave kids unattended in a car. They could take the hand brake off or choke on something.

Forecourts can be dangerous as drivers do not expect to see children. Perhaps the only exception is where they have a dedicated marked area for pedestrians to walk and if any toddlers have reigns.

FrenchandSaunders · 17/04/2023 21:46

Imagine the queue 😳🤣

user1496146479 · 17/04/2023 21:46

Totally fine to do!!

nomoredriving · 17/04/2023 21:46

@00100001 don't be ridiculous it was only 4 hours 39 mins!!

SnackSizeRaisin · 17/04/2023 21:47

They are a lot more likely to get injured in a crash on the way to the shop than anything bad happen parked in a petrol station for 5 minutes. If you're that worried he shouldn't have taken them anywhere

maddiemookins16mum · 17/04/2023 21:48

YABU. I really wonder about the fragility/extreme reactions of some young mums these days.

Sorry but what exactly is the risk? Honestly I have no idea what could happen, except very unlikely scenarios such as car bursting into flames, car being rear ended by another car, someone stealing the car with the children inside? These aren't actually risks though, just your fears
