To think that if it was France & French no one would care about a name change but because it’s Welsh…

Welsh is trending on Twitter because a lot of people don’t like the fact that the Brecon Beacons will revert to its Welsh name https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/apr/17/brecon-beacons-relaunches-with-welsh-name-bannau-brycheiniog-as-picture-of-hope-for-future

People also kicked off when Snowdon also reverted to its Welsh name Yr Wyddfa

Aibu to really not understand the issue. I am Welsh and a Welsh speaker. It makes sense to me to call place names by their Welsh names and not by their anglicised versions if you want to protect a language and culture. Which we do.

Noone would bat an eyelid if in France their decided to only use French names. We drive in France and get by without English alternatives. So what exactly is the problem with Wales doing the same?

Brecon Beacons national park renamed Bannau Brycheiniog in Welsh language move

National park also ditches fiery logo as it embarks on plan to tackle climate and biodiversity crisis

People are so weird. Why shouldn't they have there Welsh names?

Letshaveablackcelebration2022 · 17/04/2023 13:43

@FOJN the climate change reasons are also valid if you watch the video. And Farage is a flag waving unionist who has zero understanding of Welsh cultural life so would expect nothing less. Luckily when his party tried their luck in wales, they didn’t win a single seat

The Welsh football team have officially changed their name to Cymru. Which doesn’t seem to have caused any outrage at all.

To be fair he doesn’t understand English cultural life much either!

No one with a brain really cares OP, but I would suggest those same people you see being outraged over this, WOULD also object if it was French. There’s always a few.

Oh wait, now I’ve seen it’s because of stupid wokism, the name change is purely about paying lip service to climate change, not because of anything to do with welsh heritage- that does make my eyes roll, sorry.

Letshaveablackcelebration2022 · 17/04/2023 13:45

@Arapawa and is it not the role of the WG to protect the Welsh landscape too. There is a whole area of growth around green jobs as it’s the future so I would argue it’s right that they are forward looking

@dietcokelime exactly that. I mean I could talk about my months spent travelling and living in Nippon, how much I admire Nipponese culture even though I am very much an outsider, and how obsessed I am with Nipponese food.

It would be more technically correct, and some Nipponese fanatics in the Anglosphere do say Nippon, but I prefer to just go with Japan, because it's more idely understood and therefore less snobbish.

Point of language is to make yourself understood.

@Arapawa given our horrendous social problems and entrenched poverty in many areas, YES.

Do you think the Irish are snobbish for calling their Parliament the Dáil and their leader the Taoiseach?

Letshaveablackcelebration2022 · 17/04/2023 13:46

@Naunet and it’s fuck all to do with wokeism whatever that stupid word means anyway

That's not what I'm saying, O Mindless Outrage Person

sweeneytoddsrazor · 17/04/2023 13:48

I thought the name was being changed to reflect climate change primarily rather than just revert to the Welsh name.

It is obviously different to France because, English is the predominantly spoken language in Wales.

Clarinet1 · 17/04/2023 13:48

As someone who has some knowledge of Welsh language and culture, I think it is fair enough
to use the Welsh name. Comparisons with France, Germany etc don’t really hold water as relatively few places have English versions of their names; OK, there’s the Eiffel Tower and some places such as Lyons and Marseilles have slightly different spellings but we still refer to Notre Dame and the Sainte Chappelle.

Stroopwaffle5000 · 17/04/2023 13:48

English people don't say Espana or Polska, for example, we say Spain and Poland. Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't see the difference.

Lol how can you say it’s nothing to do with it if you don’t even know what it means?! Whatever, I really can’t be bothered to care about such a petty thing.

AWaferThinMint · 17/04/2023 13:49

I don’t have a problem with Wales using the welsh language names for any location when advertising themselves as a place to visit. I can still use an English name when taking about a trip, same as I use English names for French, German, and Spanish sites in a large number of cases, because I’m an English speaker.

mainsfed · 17/04/2023 13:50

Letshaveablackcelebration2022 · 17/04/2023 13:33

@Mumma hopefully more people will use the Welsh place names. There’s a great promotional vid of Michael sheen using lots of Welsh words https://t.co/cIdyBAOuCL

How will you spell Turkey from now on, OP?

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 17/04/2023 13:50

I don't really care what people call them tbh. I can sort of see the logic of people using Welsh names to talk about Welsh places, though by that measure, we should all start pronouncing Paris the French way, Germany should be Deutschland and we should start talking about Moskva instead of Moscow etc.

If people do think it's important to switch to the Welsh name, I have no objections to that. Just as long as you don't actually expect me to have any idea what you're talking about.

Letshaveablackcelebration2022 · 17/04/2023 13:51

And, to the point of the title of the thread, the French call England Anglaterre and Wales Pays du Galles. I can’t get worked up about that at all.

They have also asked for the country to be spelled in their language in future.

Briallen · 17/04/2023 13:53

I’m welsh. I think it’s great that the mountain range names are reverting back to their welsh names. However I don’t care if people use their English names when speaking English much like I use English names for places abroad. I haven’t seen much outrage but im not on Twitter so might have missed it!

Letshaveablackcelebration2022 · 17/04/2023 13:54

@mainsfed well if that is what the country has asked for, is it not courtesy to respect their wishes?

Otherwise we all come across as total ignorant tossers…

"Do you think the Irish are snobbish for calling their Parliament the Dáil and their leader the Taoiseach?"

Ironically we in Ireland call our country Ireland when we are speaking English. Obviously if we were speaking Irish, we wouldn't (probably anyway).

This reminds me of the outrage when Dingle wanted to change its name to An Dangean - the consensus seemed to be that locals could, obviously, call it what they wanted but deleting all references to Dingle from maps and tourist information was stupid because no-one could then find it.

The solution, in Dingle, was to use both names, as appears to happen with many Welsh names anyway.

Okunevo · 17/04/2023 13:56

I have trouble with spoken language without seeing it written down in phonetics I understand (I need subtitles). I would try to learn the Welsh names but need to find the pronunciation written down first. Just hearing it doesn't work for me.
