To think that if it was France & French no one would care about a name change but because it’s Welsh…

Welsh is trending on Twitter because a lot of people don’t like the fact that the Brecon Beacons will revert to its Welsh name https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/apr/17/brecon-beacons-relaunches-with-welsh-name-bannau-brycheiniog-as-picture-of-hope-for-future

People also kicked off when Snowdon also reverted to its Welsh name Yr Wyddfa

Aibu to really not understand the issue. I am Welsh and a Welsh speaker. It makes sense to me to call place names by their Welsh names and not by their anglicised versions if you want to protect a language and culture. Which we do.

Noone would bat an eyelid if in France their decided to only use French names. We drive in France and get by without English alternatives. So what exactly is the problem with Wales doing the same?

Brecon Beacons national park renamed Bannau Brycheiniog in Welsh language move

National park also ditches fiery logo as it embarks on plan to tackle climate and biodiversity crisis

I really don't think any sane person minds Confused

Letshaveablackcelebration2022 · 17/04/2023 13:21

The backlash has literally been amazing - including typically from that c**t Farage 🙄

I don't have a problem with it.
But I would like to know how the names are pronounced!

potniatheron · 17/04/2023 13:25

I'm Welsh, speak Welsh (not as fluently as I once did) and I still call them Brecon Beacons and Snowdon.

The names of places do tend to depend on the langiage of the speaker who is saying them for example, the country I'm originally from is definitely called Ellada. But for some reason everyone here calls it Greece.

dietcokelime · 17/04/2023 13:27

I'll probably still call them the old names, because I don't speak Welsh. Similar to how people call Germany by the name Germany, not Deutschland 🤷🏻‍♀️

BunnyFun · 17/04/2023 13:27

Did you know that the Welsh for farage is cwunt?

This. Needs a popularisation campaign that outlines Welsh pronunciation.

NuffSaidSam · 17/04/2023 13:28

People just need something to be upset about.

English speakers will continue to use the English name and will get to grips with signs etc. being in Welsh soon enough.

Lots of fuss over nothing.

Coffeeandbourbons · 17/04/2023 13:28

But the majority of Welsh people don’t speak Welsh?

No one pays attention to him. Just had a look at Twitter and I think backlash is a bit extreme.

I think it's a great idea.

Letshaveablackcelebration2022 · 17/04/2023 13:29

@Coffeeandbourbons even more reason to do it then!

@BunnyFun 🤣

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 17/04/2023 13:29

Well the fact that Snowdon is still called Snowdon by nearly everyone means it won't make a jot of difference tbh.

Mumma · 17/04/2023 13:29

I live just outside the beacons np and this is the first I've heard about it... no one will care and everyone will continue to call it brecon beacons because hardly any of us in South wales speak welsh sadly...

Phos · 17/04/2023 13:30

It seems like a lot of fuss over nothing - from both sides. If you speak Welsh, call them by the Welsh name, if you're speaking English use the English name. We don't go around chatting about Le Tour Eiffel, Das Brandenburger Tor or Sultanahmet Camii do we?

It tells you in the linked Guardian article!!

What has that got to do with anything? Plenty of Welsh place names are Welsh only and people just use them. Regardless of whether they speak Welsh.

RobertsRadio · 17/04/2023 13:32

The use of welsh names in Wales seems perfectly reasonable to me.

TokyoSushi · 17/04/2023 13:32

I've just seen the advert with Michael Sheen announcing the change, it sounds beautiful!

Letshaveablackcelebration2022 · 17/04/2023 13:33

@Mumma hopefully more people will use the Welsh place names. There’s a great promotional vid of Michael sheen using lots of Welsh words https://t.co/cIdyBAOuCL

It's not a language issue at all and the change doesn't appear to have anything about protecting Welsh culture. The "backlash" as you call it is because of the reason for the change. I'm no fan of NF but I went to find out what he had said, "Wales has gone mad" was his comment attached to a link to the Telegraph article. But hey you got to call NF a cunt so well done you.

Arapawa · 17/04/2023 13:37

I didn't know Snowdon had its name changed.

Don't the welsh parliament have better things to spend their money on?

Naunet · 17/04/2023 13:39

No one with a brain really cares OP, but I would suggest those same people you see being outraged over this, WOULD also object if it was French. There’s always a few.

potniatheron · 17/04/2023 13:40

@dietcokelime exactly that. I mean I could talk about my months spent travelling and living in Nippon, how much I admire Nipponese culture even though I am very much an outsider, and how obsessed I am with Nipponese food.

It would be more technically correct, and some Nipponese fanatics in the Anglosphere do say Nippon, but I prefer to just go with Japan, because it's more idely understood and therefore less snobbish.

Point of language is to make yourself understood.

@Arapawa given our horrendous social problems and entrenched poverty in many areas, YES.

Iimp · 17/04/2023 13:42

I’m half Welsh; have a very Welsh name and am proud of my Welsh heritage. I have no problem with it reverting to its Welsh name. That being said, I don’t know how to pronounce the Welsh name so will continue to call it the Brecon Beacons - same with Snowden.

Divebar2021 · 17/04/2023 13:42

I’m not fussed about the name change but since less than 20% of the population of Wales are able to speak Welsh then the comparison with France seems a little unfair.
