Am I the only person who never opens their front door to anyone?

I just heard my front door go, so I hid in the kitchen out of sight, no idea who it was but I'm now very curious.
I wasn't expecting anyone, if it was family I would have answered because they wouldn't come unannounced.
I also never answer my phone if I don't recognise the number. Is this just me or does anyone else do this?
I have never really thought about why until now.

I’ve got social anxiety (mainly thanks to Covid!) and do this. However, we have CCTV so I can see who is ringing the doorbell and would answer it if it is a relative/friend. I also don’t like answering the telephone if the call is coming through on a withheld number.

YukoandHiro · 17/04/2023 11:08

OP, that's not really normal. It might have been a neighbour or the postman....

What exactly were you scared of?

It seems to be the norm on MN but I've never come across it much in RL

Unless you have significant problems with social interaction imo it is weird as fuck to hide in your own home and not open your front door unless you are in the bath/bed or something or live in a particularly bad area known for doorstep attacks! It is simple and probably quicker to politely despatch a cold caller within seconds if you are not interested.

I don't answer my landline (dh is self employed so it doubles as a work phone so I leave it to take a message) as everyone I know uses my mobile; but I would answer my mobile if I was free - again politely sending any cold caller packing within seconds.

Zanatdy · 17/04/2023 11:09

Of course I answer my door.

Kaylisa · 17/04/2023 11:09

I don’t answer the door unless I am expecting someone. I’ll happily sit and ignore it. I don’t like unexpected visitors.
I do most of the time answer the phone

YukoandHiro · 17/04/2023 11:09

@BadLad 😂😂

Ravageur · 17/04/2023 11:09

are you on glue

Jesus, what is wrong with you?

I mean, ok, maybe paranoia about danger with the front door (that’s what a safety chain is for) but what the heck do you think answering a phone will subject you to?

”Hello?” “no thank you, not interested” <hang up>

Job done.

'Jesus what is wrong with you', how very tolerant and kind of you. You do understand that some people are anxious don't you?

Op, don't answer the door if you don't want to, ditto the phone. Many people of course answer but I can't get my knickers in a knot if others aren't comfortable doing so. Live and let live if you ask me.

GloomySkies · 17/04/2023 11:10

When I had very small children, I used to answer the door to people telling me I had left the car door wide open on the drive, or the keys in the front door 😳

Kaylisa · 17/04/2023 11:13

I ignored the door just this morning. Was my friend dropping me off a present.
I didn’t know she was coming or who was at the door. Ignored it. She left it for me on doorstep and text me. I have of course replied and said thank you.

I don’t see the issue.
Ive always been like it

It’s bizarre and very unusual for a fully functioning adult who (I assume - never wise here though!), holds down a job, raises a family, pays bills, speaks to colleagues/family etc.
Hiding from the door bell!!! Ridiculous.

Many aren't hiding.

They're ignoring.

SwapTheYforaD · 17/04/2023 11:15

I'm the same as you OP!!

Highdaysandholidays1 · 17/04/2023 11:15

I answer the door about 3/4 times a day! We have a lot delivered through Amazone, at least one or two online shops a week, the odd Costa delivery, takeaways, the neighbours popping something spare over (e.g. food they can't eat), my family, people planning to call by...

I do live on a road though, so I'm not worried anyone's going to do anything, ever.

Singinghollybob · 17/04/2023 10:04

No I answer the door and answer the phone.

So do I, what with being a normal adult and everything.

I only don't answer the phone if I've been getting a lot of scam calls, then I screen them for a while until they give up for a few weeks.

friendsinplaces · 17/04/2023 11:18

When did this start to be a thing? It's crazy. I have security so I can see the person on the doorstep and speak to them if I don't know them, but I wouldn't ignore that they are there. As for not answering the phone - what is going to happen to you if you get someone you don't want to talk to? Nothing.

augustusglupe · 17/04/2023 11:21

If I'm not expecting anything I don't answer my door either OP, or phone

You have to engage in a conversation that you don't want to have?

It's an irritation.

Newgolddream70 · 17/04/2023 11:22

I don't answer my front door unless I'm expecting someone of course. I think knocking on your door without an invitation is really intrusive. I don't answer the home phone either if it rings - I stare at it waiting for it to ring out, wondering who the hell it is 😂 I know, it's mad!

Coldilox · 17/04/2023 11:22

Of course I answer the door. It might be a delivery (not just me that orders stuff so I wouldn’t always know). There’s a million things it could be.

its very weird not to

DiscoBeat · 17/04/2023 11:24

Why would you hide? Very strange unless you are expecting an unwanted guest.

CatOnTheChair · 17/04/2023 11:24

The guys opposite didn't open their door. I started refusing parcels, as you could never get rid of them once accepted.

Yes, I open the door.

sst1234 · 17/04/2023 10:04

Is this for real? Or a wind up thread in the spirit of MN stereotypes?

But no, most people live normally.

Exactly my thoughts too 🙄

ZeroFuchsGiven · 17/04/2023 11:25

Jellycats4life · 17/04/2023 10:29

Not this again.

Only on MN do I encounter so many people scared of their own doorbell.
