Am I the only person who never opens their front door to anyone?

I just heard my front door go, so I hid in the kitchen out of sight, no idea who it was but I'm now very curious.
I wasn't expecting anyone, if it was family I would have answered because they wouldn't come unannounced.
I also never answer my phone if I don't recognise the number. Is this just me or does anyone else do this?
I have never really thought about why until now.

'Unless there is a very good reason not to answer your door, not answering it is very weird indeed and I have only ever heard of it on here. And the weird guys across the street. Some people are scared of their own shadow.'

People are busy, maybe online wfh. Some may be anxious that isn't 'weird'. Some may have physical problems. Some cba! Whatever, it's really no one's business and to label people 'weird' because they behave differently to you is a bit shit.

We get loads of deliveries, I open the door but I absolutely respect the decision of others who ignore cold callers, god botherers and other unexpected callers.

I didn't say weird, I said very weird. It's not a bit shit, it's a fact.

You aren't the the police of others opinions.

Well ditto you aren't the police of others opinions too Grin.

If folk don't open their door, their choice they'll have their reasons it isn't 'weird'. Do you think any other behaviour that differs to your own is weird too? Try a bit of tolerance and acceptance hmm?

Tolerance and acceptance, get off you high horse.

I did say without a valid reason, in the shower? Legs fell off? Mental health?

No worries.

But the OP HIDES IN THE KITCHEN unless they are expecting a call.

Defo weird.

Do you not think the blokes across the street from me behaviour is weird?

So, @Janiie, it's not okay for someone to mildly insult people who don't open their front doors (which were after all designed for opening). But it is fine for you to insult, err, Christians..?

Oh sorry I didn't mean to insulting Christians at all, I meant the ones, any faith, who come knocking on doors harassing people.

Again so what. I would suggest if anyone hides in the kitchen they may just be a bit socially awkward, that isn't weird. The blokes across the street maybe just cba to answer to door. That isn't weird either, it's their choice.

I'll tell you what is weird, folk judging others on who they open their door too.

RampantIvy · 19/04/2023 20:24

Then they shouldn't order goods online and pretend to be out when they are delivered. If I knew my neighbours would pretend to be out I wouldn't accept their parcels.

Jourdain11 · 19/04/2023 20:25

I do genuinely wonder, and I promise I'm not being goady, don't you worry more that you might have missed sth?

My MiL had a knock on the door in the night and it was FiL's colleagues (police) come to tell her that he'd had a heart attack on duty. There's always a chance it could be something important or time sensitive.

That is true. With couriers nowadays it is very easy to organise deliveries for when you're actually in and prepared to answer the door.

Nope.

There's nothing I can imagine I'd miss out on by ignoring an unexpected knocker.

Besides, if it really was something crucially important, I'm fairly sure the person would continue ringing the bell or knocking my knocker longer than the usual cold callers would.

nomoredriving · 19/04/2023 22:56

@24KaratCucumber ahh a cunning plan that
mad axe murderers should do the same, but they wouldn't would they, because that wouldn't be fair. So they just know once and walk away.

On another of these crazy threads, a poster actually said "you'd know it was the police, because they knock in a certain way", like no one else could possibly copy that if they wanted to gain entry.

It made me actually laugh out loud.

It is weird though. I wouldn’t call somebody weird if I saw them do it, because it wouldn’t be necessarily kind to say, but I would be pretty concerned if I saw my friend run off and hide in the kitchen because somebody had knocked on the door despite them wanting to know who was there.

Blimey if I didn’t answer my phone to unknown numbers I would never work! (Freelance). Often friends pop by unexpectedly- why would you not answer your door?

I'd always answer my door to friends. But not to people I don't know.

I think we'd see if it was the police, wouldn't we? Most of us who said we don't answer doors said that we don't answer to strangers. I would answer to the police, although there was a spate of events where criminals were pretending to be policemen in order to gain entry to people's homes.

I'd know it was the police because I'd look out of the window and see them.

Would 'we'? Our flat is at the top of the building so we can't see, and I bet it's the same for a fair few more people.

Also, OP said she didn't know who'd called - which suggests she did not look.

Ah, well you don’t have the privilege that we house owners have.

Furrybutts · 20/04/2023 01:05

I never answer my front door (and rarely look at the doorbell camera)
If anyone who knows me is outside, they will text me to say so.

Rarely answer my phone, that is what voicemail is for.

Not one bit bothered about being called weird.

PickleOfAConundrum · 20/04/2023 01:09

We have security cameras fitted so we can see who's coming up the steps to our apartment. If I don't recognise the caller I just don't answer the door. As for unknown phone numbers I don't answer them either. If it's that important they'll leave a voicemail and if not I tend to block the number if it comes up spam!

Tg2023 · 20/04/2023 02:31

I don't lock my door if I'm home and friends & family know this; so if I hear a knock I wasn't expecting (as friends & family just walk in) if I can be arsed I'll answer if not they can try again another day if it's important 😅

nomoredriving · 20/04/2023 06:23

@GanjaDhin so you're a medium non door opener, the PP was a complete I don't get my area of the sofa for a door knocker.

And she honestly thought she'd always know it was the police so would then.

Hilarious!

GanjaDhin · 20/04/2023 07:21

Nolongera · 19/04/2023 12:38

There are 3 blokes in a house across the road from us who never answer the door, man about 60 yes old and 2 lads I assume his sons about 30 yes old.

I took a parcel in for him, saw the delivery guy card him, he never came to pick it up. I waited until he arrived home, saw him go in so I went and knocked, I could see him moving around inside the house, yet still no answer. This happend twice.

In the end I had to accost him in the street in order to get him to take it.

Unless there is a very good reason not to answer your door, not answering it is very weird indeed and I have only ever heard of it on here. And the weird guys across the street.

Some people are scared of their own shadow.

Perhaps he was avoiding you for a reason? He might think you are very intrusive, watching his movements and actions instead of minding your own business.
