Am I the only person who never opens their front door to anyone?

I just heard my front door go, so I hid in the kitchen out of sight, no idea who it was but I'm now very curious.
I wasn't expecting anyone, if it was family I would have answered because they wouldn't come unannounced.
I also never answer my phone if I don't recognise the number. Is this just me or does anyone else do this?
I have never really thought about why until now.

Time to stop watching horror movies OP

samestyle · 17/04/2023 10:35

I can see through the glass in the door, if I don't want to open I won't, I don't care if they see me.

JulieHoney · 17/04/2023 10:35

Jesus, what is wrong with you?

I mean, ok, maybe paranoia about danger with the front door (that’s what a safety chain is for) but what the heck do you think answering a phone will subject you to?

”Hello?” “no thank you, not interested” <hang up>

Job done.

ZeroFuchsGiven · 17/04/2023 10:35

This has seriously been done to death on here.

Yes its absolutely batshit behaviour to not answer your door or phone.

BellaBlossoms · 17/04/2023 10:36

How odd! I can see who’s at my door via the Ring doorbell and I always answer my phone. Worst case scenario if it’s a sales call I hang up.

OldTinHat · 17/04/2023 10:37

I never answer the door if I'm not expecting anyone or a parcel. I never answer unknown numbers either.

You're not alone OP!

IncompleteSenten · 17/04/2023 10:38

I don't tend to answer the phone to unknown numbers because they have mostly turned out to be you've had an accident/invest in crypto/your computer has a virus / we're your bank type of bollocks.

Anyone genuine can leave a message.

The door - depends. If I'm busy doing something then sometimes I don't.
If I've noticed people with clipboards knocking around I don't bother. All I would do would be open it, say no and close it again. Seems like a waste of both our time. 🤷 Same goes for young blokes with big bags who try to flog you a cloth for a fiver while giving you a sob story. And Jehovah's witnesses.

Ponoka7 · 17/04/2023 10:38

Whenever I hear about a woman escaping her rapist etc and being helped by knocking on doors, I always think thank god it wasn't a typical MNers door they knocked on.

OldTinHat · 17/04/2023 10:40

@24KaratCucumber Rumbelows! I'd forgotten all about them!!!

ZeroFuchsGiven · 17/04/2023 10:40

I cant help but think of Catherine Tate doing the frightened woman sketches when these threads pop up.

Ihatepainting · 17/04/2023 10:41

This is a common thing on here, in real life I think it’s very uncommon to not answer your door or phone, but there are a lot of extreme introverts it seems on here.

but I think the op is taking it to a whole new level when you hide in your own home.

Goodoccasionallypoor · 17/04/2023 10:41

I don't understand this thinking but you might find a Ring Doorbell useful - you can see who is at the door and talk to them through the unit if you like.

LittleFreakJezebel · 17/04/2023 10:42

jugglingjugs · 17/04/2023 10:22

It's just something I've never been comfortable with, I think I just feel put on the spot if I open the door and don't know who it is or what they want, same with unknown calls.
Yet I'm so curious to who it was and what they wanted.

Just get a ring doorbell if it's that much of an issue

murasaki · 17/04/2023 10:44

I always answer the door, but not unrecognised numbers on my phone.

Agree, it’s very extreme to be hiding in your own home as someone rang your doorbell and no way to live. A ring doorbell might help. But when you’re so scared of answering the door you will hide something is very wrong.

Goodoccasionallypoor · 17/04/2023 10:47

I remember being a bit like this when I was a kid at home alone (under age 14/15) and I'd say it was mostly a confidence issue. I don't think I've felt like this since.

Hbh17 · 17/04/2023 10:48

I rarely answer the door because it's usually sales people etc, so a total waste of time. I don't know anybody who would "drop by" unannounced.
Same with the phone - if I don't recognise the number then I don't answer because life is too short to faff around with unsolicited calls.
Not afraid in the slightest, just don't want to waste time on unnecessary contacts.

FiveShelties · 17/04/2023 10:49

It would drive me mad not knowing who it was and the thought of hiding is just too weird.

Whendovescry03 · 17/04/2023 10:50

I usually answer my door, but if it's someone I don't recognise, don't expect and I've not ordered anything for delivery, I might ignore it.

I ignore and block any unknown numbers I get to my phone as I get 2 or 3 spam calls a day.

EyesOnThePies · 17/04/2023 10:51

Seems a negative and misanthropic way to view the world , to me.

YouveGotToGrooveIt · 17/04/2023 10:51

I open the door when I know who it is or when I don't but it is convenient to do so. Same with the phone.

But if it is not convenient then I have no shame in ignoring the doorbell or phone.

Sparklesocks · 17/04/2023 10:51

I always answer. I am a nosy cow and want to know who it is. Normally it’s a delivery for us or a driver asking me to take a parcel in for my neighbour.

Also the phone - I do get robocalls which is a pain but I’ve recently given birth and had some complications during my pregnancy, I often had calls from the obstetrician/diabetic team so would’ve missed those if I only answered numbers I knew.

Jonei · 17/04/2023 10:51

I don't answer the phone unless I know who it is. If they leave a message I may or may not ring them back, depending on if it's something that interests me.
I wouldn't bother to open the front door if I didn't know who it is, but the dog barks which is really annoying, so I end up having to answer it to shut him up.

RoseHenley · 17/04/2023 10:52

Of course I answer the door.

I couldn't imagine feeling this unsafe in my home..

tokka · 17/04/2023 10:52

Nope, I'm the same! I completely agree, I never open the door and it's always locked!

And for all the people mocking, ever heard of Jill Dando?
