Do you know that Belfast and NI are in the British Isles? Are you aware that some British people claim they do not know that NI is in the same timezone as the rest of the UK?

YABU = You can't expect British people to know the history and geography of their country.
YANBU = Of course British people know this stuff. Anyone who says otherwise is having you on.

My DH is from Coleraine. He considers (and calls himself) himself British and would never call himself Irish, nor would any of his family. I obviously can’t speak for NI Protestants, but that’s how all the ones I’ve met identify.

DH’s family is from Belfast.

Coleraine is very close to Derry/Londonderry and as you probably know that area has a
historically divisive culture about wether citizens are Irish or British - a culture that just isn’t prevelant in the rest of NI. Never met anyone from Belfast who introduces themselves as British.

Expecting grown adult voters in the UK to know that the UK only has one, ONE, only 1 time zone is not intellectual snobbery.

You’re 100% correct op. We’re all as thick as shit compared to you. When you have the time please make and upload a tutorial of facts that you think everyone should know, we’d hate to offend you with our lack of knowledge in future 👍

JaneJeffer · 16/04/2023 01:11

The geography curriculum includes the counties of Ireland. It's not optional.

And?

That doesn’t mean every adult in ROI regains all 33 in their memory forever.

DownNative · 16/04/2023 01:16

JaneJeffer · 16/04/2023 01:11

The geography curriculum includes the counties of Ireland. It's not optional.

But that doesn’t automatically mean all citizens of the ROI will be able to name them all.

In much the same way you wouldn't expect all US citizens to name as 50 states there. Once upon a time I could name all 50 because I purposefully learnt it, but can't do all of them today. Most, yes, but not all.

Same principle holds. Posting what the curriculum has as an objective isn't the same thing as people actually knowing.

TheObstinateHeadstrongGirl · 16/04/2023 01:16

It's not optional

What you mean is - it’s not optional wether or not to teach it.

It’s entirely optional wether people remember it well into adult lives though.

That's true of everything. I'm sure you were taught how to spell whether at school...

The irony is OP’s bizarre outrage about ONE poster is something she herself misunderstood 😂

The BST time now is 01:19. There are 5 other time zones across the world where the time is also 01:19

TooBigForMyBoots · 16/04/2023 01:20

TheObstinateHeadstrongGirl · 16/04/2023 01:12

No one said otherwise though.

You still haven’t said who you mean when you refer to ‘UK citizens’ who don’t know Belfast is in the same tie zone as the rest of the UK. Who do you mean? Why won’t you answer?

I think UK citizens is pretty explanatory. I have somewhat narrowed it down to people who have voted in multiple UK elections.

My geography is shit. But even I know that the UK has only one time zone. This poll agrees with me that most Mnetters know the UK has only one time zone.

I am relieved.Smile

Belfast isn’t any more representative of the whole of NI than Coleraine is. You said that people from NI call themselves Irish. I, and another poster who is actually from NI, have said that this isn’t necessarily the case. Some do, some don’t.

I just checked, as I was interested. As of 2021, 42.8% of NI identified as British, 33.3% identified as Irish, and 31.5% identified as Northern Irish.

Oh no, however will I cope from that sick burn 😂

At least I’m not insisting all Irish people definitely know all 33 Irish counties 🤣

PousseyNotMoira · 16/04/2023 01:05

It’s been explained to you multiple times already. I’m not doing it again.

You'll have to use words of one syllable, because I'm obviously too dumb to have understood why not knowing one single fact makes a person stupid.

And OP will be relieved to know that I've never voted in a general election or referendum, so my lack of knowledge has never come into play in national decision-making!

tentinginmarch · 15/04/2023 23:16

Hate to point it out to you @TooBigForMyBoots but it's the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. NI is not part of GB.

The OP said ‘The British Isles’, that’s a geographical description and it includes the whole island of Ireland.

I know what a UK citizen is.

YOU asked “OMG are there UK citizens who REALLY think Ireland is in another time won, lol, guffaw, slap my area and call me Sally”. Which people/citizens are you referring to? Who has alluded to this? It must be someone to evoke such a strong reaction? You haven’t sat in bed and decided “I bet people in the UK think Ireland is in a different time zone”. So who do you mean?

(Answer: we know who you mean because we’ve seen the posts on another thread, where you’ve spectacularly embarrass yourself by entirely getting the wrong end of the stick)

Careful otherwise people may find out there humans in existence who don’t like in the UK or ROI. Their tiny little heads will explode

Exactly - how embarrassing for a PP to think a group of Islands is actually a ‘geo-political’ term

My family and I are from Down. I know Antrim and Down best. Londonderry is a sore point, so best not. Armagh I know a good bit. Tyrone and Fermanagh would be the weaker points given I've no family there.

But I certainly do know people from Belfast who call themselves British only. Especially East Belfast. Some call themselves Northern Irish in addition to British. Someone from the Shankill and Sandy Row aren't going to say anything else!

However, I no longer know anyone from Belfast who call themselves Irish.

This is why the census is the more important thing on this point.

Coleraine - believe that town doesn't refer to itself as Irish by majority.

Londonderry - or Stroke City - is a different kettle of fish. Belfast and Stroke City were/are the main flashpoints. Rest of Northern Ireland's towns are pretty different to those two in that respect.

DownNative · 16/04/2023 00:51

Only those who have an Irish passport are classed as EU citizens. Those who don't aren't classed as EU citizens.

1,000,000 people in Northern Ireland hold a UK passport.

614,300 people in Northern Ireland hold an Irish passport.

So, most people aren't going to be classed as EU citizens at passport control in the EU....

If you are born in NI you can have an Irish passport if you want. That’s all the PP is saying, not that everyone has one.

TheObstinateHeadstrongGirl · 16/04/2023 01:27

OP’s words

Are you aware that some British people claim they do not know that NI is in the same timezone as the rest of the UK?

Who are the ‘some British people’? How many of them?

DownNative · 16/04/2023 01:31

TheObstinateHeadstrongGirl · 16/04/2023 01:15

And?

That doesn’t mean every adult in ROI regains all 33 in their memory forever.

There's 32 counties altogether.

26 = Republic of Ireland.

6 = Northern Ireland.

TooBigForMyBoots · 16/04/2023 01:31

I don't know "how many" @TheObstinateHeadstrongGirl. That's why I opened a poll.

wankerseverywhere · 16/04/2023 01:35

I'll be the pedant (maybe someone else already has pointed this out; I'm not reading 10 pages).

NI actually isn't part of the British Isles, though it is part of the United Kingdom.

The clue is in the title: the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

JaneJeffer · 16/04/2023 01:36

Yeah just as well considering there's only 32 @TheObstinateHeadstrongGirl

Not correct.

The British Isles is the collective name for the islands of Great Britain, Ireland, the Isle of Man, the Inner and Outer Hebrides, the Northern Isles, and a whole bunch of others.

Jourdain11 · 16/04/2023 01:40

The Channel Islands too, although they're not part of the same archipelago.
