Do you know that Belfast and NI are in the British Isles? Are you aware that some British people claim they do not know that NI is in the same timezone as the rest of the UK?

YABU = You can't expect British people to know the history and geography of their country.
YANBU = Of course British people know this stuff. Anyone who says otherwise is having you on.

Hate to point it out to you @TooBigForMyBoots but it's the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. NI is not part of GB.

Do you live in the UK? Do you think that Belfast is in a different timezone to London?

They said UK not GB

JenniferBarkley · 15/04/2023 23:18

Jesus there's been some amount of shite about Ireland on here over the weekend.

Sorry* *@JaneJeffer , might be my fault - found myself thinking a week or two ago that we haven't had a spell of this for a while. Obviously summoned it from the ether.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 15/04/2023 23:19

@WonderingWanda got there first!

JaneJeffer · 15/04/2023 23:20

@JenniferBarkley they've been triggered by Biden Grin

tentinginmarch · 15/04/2023 23:20

@TooBigForMyBoots yes I live in the UK and I'm aware of time zones. I haven't read the original thread tbh.
My point was the definition of GB specifically excludes NI.

Aslanplustwo · 15/04/2023 23:23

I'm on the other side of the world and I've known Belfast and NI are in the British Isles since I was very young, so yes they will be in the same time zone. How can anyone actually living there not know? What about the great British education system we keep hearing about on MN?

Jourdain11 · 15/04/2023 23:24

TooBigForMyBoots · 15/04/2023 23:13

I have recently discovered that some Mnetters claim to not know that Belfast is in the same timezone of the rest of the UK.Shock

Not a bun fight.
Not a TAAT.
Just trying to find out how many UK Mnetters are so ignorant of their own country.

Because I don't believe it for one second.

I didn't know that.

I didn't know. Why is that so shocking?

OnlyFannys · 15/04/2023 23:26

I once convinced a friend that Lancashire was in a different time zone to Yorkshire.

Pixiedust1234 · 15/04/2023 22:52

Some people know, some don't. Probably doesn't help when NI have very different laws to the rest of the UK, ie abortion laws.

Scotland has different laws to Wales and England. No one seems confused about whether that’s in the U.K.

Pseudonamed · 15/04/2023 23:27

I think I am more surprised by the wording 'Belfast and NI' like they are different places.

Lots of Ireland bashing threads this week I have to say. Jealousy cos we got Biden think LOL

TooBigForMyBoots · 15/04/2023 23:28

I didn't mention GB @tentinginmarch. I spoke of the UK and the British Isles. And my question was specifically about the time zone.

I'm relieved to know that you know that time is the same in Belfast as it is in London. Andr Manchester, Dundee, Bangor etc. Did you know that some British people think NI is in a different time zone?🤯

Each part of the UK has different laws on certain things. England, Wales and Northern Ireland have Sunday Trading Laws, but Scotland doesn't. Likewise Scotland has minimum alcohol pricing and is bringing in the currently farcical bottle return scheme - rest of the UK is not.

Northern Ireland law and education is more similar to that of England and Wales. It's Scotland's that differs the most, believe it or not.

Jourdain11 · 15/04/2023 23:24

I still don't get why this is so shocking and horrifying! Like I said, I didn't know. Is it really so appalling?

Cross posted a similar point.

why would it be in a different time zone?

Equally, why would it not be?

MirandaBlu · 15/04/2023 23:31

Several countries have multiple time zones - mostly larger ones, but for example, Spain has a separate zone for the Canaries. France has 10 (but they're unusual in making their offshore locations departments just like regions of the mainland). At one point there was a serious proposal for Scotland to have its own time zone.

But anyway, YABU for the title : )

Haven't voted, as your options are loaded and come across biased, we're all different people so bit unfair to lump as all as one.
I'm British, yes, I'm aware that Belfast and Northern Ireland are part of the British Isles whereas Southern Ireland parts such as Dublin are a separate country in their own right.
Not everyone will though.
Also don't know anyone who thinks that Ireland has a different time zone to the UK, but no doubt someone somewhere will!

UCUNoMore · 15/04/2023 23:32

all of Ireland was in a different time zone to Britain for about 40 years up until 1916, after GMT was standardised. Dublin Time (which covered the island) was a thing. So it’s not quite so ludicrous as the OP is making out.

Bloody hell somebody's got a bee in their bonnet. My DD does this regularly and it's so bloody irritating! Just let it go ffs.
