Do you know that Belfast and NI are in the British Isles? Are you aware that some British people claim they do not know that NI is in the same timezone as the rest of the UK?

YABU = You can't expect British people to know the history and geography of their country.
YANBU = Of course British people know this stuff. Anyone who says otherwise is having you on.

There's 32 counties altogether.

26 = Republic of Ireland.

6 = Northern Ireland.

Well just pretend I wrote 32 🙄

TooBigForMyBoots · 16/04/2023 01:42

So how many time zones do you think the UK has @TheObstinateHeadstrongGirl?

OP posts:

TooBigForMyBoots · 16/04/2023 01:31

I don't know "how many" @TheObstinateHeadstrongGirl. That's why I opened a poll.

Then why did you say

Are you aware that some British people claim…” if you ‘don’t know how many”

Who do you mean? It’s not a very hard question.

Do you see how it’s odd to say “Some people do X” and then claim you apparently have no idea if even ONE person “does X”? Also if you think you’re going to get an accurate census on a forum about parenting then you’re not nearly as bright as you think.

TheObstinateHeadstrongGirl · 16/04/2023 01:45

Come on OP which “people” do y look mean? Which people/person said something that led you to believe “some British people” think NI is in a different time zone to the UK?

I mean I dont know why I am playing this game when this is literally a TAAT and you’ve ignored people who’ve proven it’s a TAAT. Just own it FFS!! Far less embarrassing than doing what you’re doing now which is this obtuse ‘what do you mean’ nonsense.

Also please stop PMing me.

Jourdain11 · 16/04/2023 01:39

Not correct.

The British Isles is the collective name for the islands of Great Britain, Ireland, the Isle of Man, the Inner and Outer Hebrides, the Northern Isles, and a whole bunch of others.

This is true. And coming from a ‘thick’ person as well Wink

TheObstinateHeadstrongGirl · 16/04/2023 01:47

PousseyNotMoira · 16/04/2023 00:41

Honestly, yes.

@PousseyNotMoira why is @Jourdain11 thick?

She isn’t from the UK or Ireland.

Why would she know what time zone two different countries are in that she isn’t part of?

Do you know all the time zones in the world? If not does that make you thick?

TheObstinateHeadstrongGirl · 16/04/2023 01:49

TooBigForMyBoots · 16/04/2023 01:42

So how many time zones do you think the UK has @TheObstinateHeadstrongGirl?

what on Earth gave you the impression I didn’t know the answer? I’m not playing your silly game.

Literally no one has said the UK has 2 time zones, have they? Or have they? You can surely tell us?

Why are you dodging my question BTW, whilst demanding I answer yours.

CremeEggQueen · 16/04/2023 01:51

JaneJeffer · 16/04/2023 01:19

That's true of everything. I'm sure you were taught how to spell whether at school...

Booom- yes 😁
People were taught how to spell at school.
Although you can blame it on auto correct nowadays 🙄😁

Exactly - how embarrassing for a PP to think a group of Islands is actually a ‘geo-political’ term

Embarrassing that I'm aware of the fact that 'British Isles' is is a geo-political term. I'm afraid not. And you getting huffy doesn't change that. But British people do tend to get very aerated about such things I've noticed.

You can always go lecture the Irish government on this matter though. They'll be charmed to make your acquaintance no doubt.

Pseudonamed · 16/04/2023 01:52

Who is the poster that continuously says belfast people are not Irish cos my oh is and all his family are and thats a considerable amount of family plus his ex - well all his exes cos he never dated outside irish and all their families. Bar two of his friends who class themselves as Brits (and yes we are mortified in their behalf) every single person in WEST Belfast classes themselves as Irish or Northern not British so while you are on here to tell people about 'Belfast people' maybe point out ONE side of your mind and your mouth let alone Belfast itself.

Aslanplustwo · 16/04/2023 01:53

Jourdain11 · 15/04/2023 23:25

I didn't know. Why is that so shocking?

Because surely it is just basic knowledge about one's own part of the world?

The British Isles are a group of islands. Not an abstract political concept. What aren’t you getting?

Because Jourdain isn’t from that part of the world. And neither are many, many MN posters.

That's what I thought too. If someone needs to ask if the UK has more than one time zone, they're probably not from the UK.

OP posts:
TheObstinateHeadstrongGirl · 16/04/2023 01:59

But WHO has said that OP? WHO has ever said or insinuated to you that there are 2 time zones in the UK?

I cannot fathom why you won’t answer. (I actually can. I’m being sarcastic)

I guess to the extent that giving any region/landmass/group of islands a name is politically determined (or was, at some point). The group of islands aren't in themselves a geopolitical construct though, they're just a group of islands.

It's actually easier to argue that, for example, the borders of France are geopolitically determined because successive governments, other nations and international bodies carved bits off, occupied bits, and stuck bits back on again. But nobody chopped Ireland off the side of GB to make a political point.

I'm saying, the term 'British Isles' isn't a purely geographical term. The Irish government say the same.

But you have so little awareness of anything outside your tiny British bubble that you can't even begin to ponder why this might be. And you call me embarrassing?

Lots of countries have more than one timezone. This is a non-issue.

No-one is disputing that lots of countries have more than one time zone, but surely people living in a country should at the very least know how many time zones there are - especially when there is only one???

@Jourdain11 lives in the U.K. Northern Ireland is in the U.K. Nobody has asked that she know all the time zones in the world. However, knowing the time zone of the country in which you live is pretty basic.

I’ve RTFT and you’re being extremely antagonistic and appear to be trying to get into fights with as many people as possible. Why?

And you’re ignoring all comments demonstrating that no, not everyone in Northern Ireland identifies as Irish. Again, why?

And, at this point, you’re essentially bullying the OP. Why?

They do.

Literally NO ONE has claimed there are 2 time zones in the UK.

The OP made it up after misunderstanding a post on an entirely different thread. Then brought her smug self over to whip up a frenzy and laugh at all the people who think this - when actually literally no one has said this on MN and (presumably) elsewhere (though we will never know as OP is ignoring the question of ‘who said that’).

So sad people have such low self esteem then need other idiots on MN to tell them they’re so clever and other people are so thick.
