To not get rid of the hot tub?

SunsetsInVenice · 15/04/2023 22:20

We use the hot tub in the evenings, usually from 9PM-10PM. It does get quite loud but we only use it of an evening.
However, noticed next door neighbour is clearly not happy about it. Keeps looking out the window, opening and then slamming the windows and today told me the sound is carrying and stopping her from enjoying her evening especially as the noise is so distracting. Aibu to say we are hardly in it all day and that we aren't getting rid of it?

You use your hot tub every night? What a faff on that must be.

They are pretty noisy and annoying.

Neither is using a hot tub late most evenings and refusing to consider your neighbour.

Two can play at that game.

But there can be a middle way, there’s no need to escalate and set out make your neighbour’s life miserable.

I’ve never had a dog (or a hot tub!) but I don’t begrudge my neighbour having a dog which barks at passing people. Or the neighbours who have the odd Saturday night party that’s over by 11pm. Or the school that’s just been built on my road where the kids scream at lunchtime. It’s all part of living in built up areas.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 15/04/2023 22:39

Is it right by the boundary between your 2 houses? Could you move it away from them?

it does seem quite late to be using it, especially every night.

ImAvingOops · 15/04/2023 22:40

I don't get the fuss - surely most people are indoors watching telly between 9 - 10? How noisy can it be that it disturbs people sitting inside a neighbouring house?
I don't think 10pm is that late anyway.

Nevermind31 · 15/04/2023 22:42

Why does it get loud? Can you keep it quieter?

They are really loud. I was really pleased when my neighbour's dog punctured their inflatable one 😁

Mykittensmittens · 15/04/2023 22:47

I’ve lived next door to someone who had / has one.

I moved out.

At best they are noisy in terms of their mechanics.

add to that the occasional addition of booze/friends/music, all of which HAS to be louder than the above noise of the swamp itself.

They’re a close second only to outdoor TVs and bars in rammed suburban areas in terms of irritation and antisocial noise.

Womencanlift · 15/04/2023 22:48

Assuming this is real (doubt it) or not a reverse (if it is then do better) then YABVU

Not only are they anti social, they are unhygienic and if you have to use it then between 9-10 is not fair on your neighbours. But by the tone of your post you appear as one of those neighbours who think you are right and everyone else is wrong so doubt you will listen to what anyone says on here

Dibbydoos · 15/04/2023 22:49

Can't you build an enclosure to keep the noise in?

I get why you'd use a hot tub daily esp if you have a physical job, but 9-10pm is late.

upee · 15/04/2023 22:50

If your neighbours disturbed your evenings regularly how would you feel?

You need to discuss a way forward with them and come to an arrangement where you can both be happy.

How long have you had the hot tub? I do feel sorry for your neighbours, things like this can create alot of anxiety and stress, I'm sure you don't want to be the cause of others feeling like that.

PriamFarrl · 15/04/2023 22:52

If I knew that you would be finished by 10pm I wouldn’t mind.
If it was just the sound of the hot tub then I wouldn’t mind.
Music, shouting and going on until late is really annoying though, but if as a neighbour you promised to be done by ten then it’d be ok.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 15/04/2023 22:52

Depends what you mean by it being loud. If you mean the low hum of the tub and some water bubbling is audible whilst you quietly sit and chat in it then YANBU. If you mean you are out there laughing, splashing, loudly chatting, squealing, shouting, playing music, drinking etc then YABU at that time of night, especially in the week. Most people are winding down and getting ready come 9pm in the evening and I can imagine the noise from people in the hot tub is hard to ignore.

Cosycover · 15/04/2023 22:56

Ah come on now. You know you're being a dick

Windingdown · 15/04/2023 22:56

From what I read your neighbour isn't asking you to get rid of it, she's just asking you to be quieter. If you do that then you can all be happy.

YABU. I love that 'we are hardly in it in the day' is your justification. Your NDN probably wouldn't give a shiny shit if you were in it during the day. But 9-10pm when you can generally expect it to be quiet and she's trying to wind down or sleep, YABVU. If it's right up against her fence then you're a double twat.

Have another conversation with neighbour and find out what time would be more acceptable. Also if it's the noise of the jets (likely), and if usage without jets at certain times would be ok.

MaroonCow · 15/04/2023 23:09

I guess it must get pretty loud. Takes a lot of energy to clean and heat up water from under a bridge.

MrsDoylesDoily · 15/04/2023 23:09

Well said @Westpoint

Hillary17 · 15/04/2023 23:09

This would drive me absolutely insane! I’d be accidentally sprinkling the hose pipe over the fence every night.

Cherrysoup · 15/04/2023 23:11

Just don’t use the jets. Ours is pretty much silent bar the cleaning cycle which you’d be hard pressed to hear from next door.

SorePaw · 15/04/2023 23:12

Ihatepainting · 15/04/2023 22:23

You get in your hot tub for an hour each night? 😂

@Ihatepainting

whats so funny?

CelestiaNoctis · 15/04/2023 23:14

Hot tubs sound like a helicopter outside. You must know how loud they are. Yes you absolutely are being unreasonable. I would only get one if I had a very long or big garden away from people. You're being very selfish. Also, why would you want people to basically be able to see you in the bath out their window? It's weird.
