Does anyone think about Covid anymore?

ouchmyteeth · 13/04/2023 17:33

Feels like measures have sort of.. disappeared. Virtually no precautions whatsoever anywhere these days , not even light measures

My CEV mum doesn’t even mention it or bother with a mask anymore.

It’s like it’s gone away but obviously it has not.

I only think about the harm lockdown measures caused to my children

mamabear715 · 14/04/2023 15:52

@washrinse Absolutely. :-(

phoneissue · 14/04/2023 16:06

@Zebedee55 i am so sorry. Fingers crossed he pulls through.

tobee · 14/04/2023 16:12

I really hope this new drug for long covid becomes available soon and is of benefit to many long covid sufferers. And more to follow.

Westfacing · 14/04/2023 16:16

To be honest no, but was surprised to hear a good friend and her husband have both recently had it and both were quite ill for a couple of weeks. It was a reminder that Covid hasn't gone away. I've no idea what the national statistics are.

tobee · 14/04/2023 16:17

Thinking of you and your Dh @Zebedee55 and others still affected in whatever way.

Hoping more drugs and treatments and preventatives (evusheld and the likes) are being worked on to improve things for more people; and we're just not hearing so much as the news cycle has moved on. And that they are funded.

That is certainly one aspect of the pandemic I still have cause to think about.

Zebedee55 · 14/04/2023 10:45

DH and I are pensioners. Because of underlying health issues, we were both on the CEV/shielded list in 2020.

So, we were careful, and when available, had all the vaccines.

Life has moved on, so we weren't giving it much thought at all now - we saw it as just another thing that happened.

Sunday night, my DH was extremely unwell, and was taken by ambulance to hospital. He was tested and has Covid.

He's so ill the hospital don't think he will survive. He's now contracted hospital acquired pneumonia on top.

So, yes, I am thinking about it at the moment. 🙁

Im so sorry, Covid is a funny thing though so holding out hope for your DH.

I think about the harm done to my cousin's children by the death of her husband from Covid. He has been gone for two years now and they both still suffer dreadfully. Their education has been badly disrupted and they both now get terribly anxious if their Mum is unwell. They are so worried they are going to lose her as well.

I try not to think about it but only last week a man from our village died from pneumonia caused by Covid, leaving two primary aged children. And, I met a friend for lunch on Tuesday. She has text me today to say she has just tested positive. We are supposed to be going to Spain for a holiday on Tuesday so just hoping I don't go down with it. I was really ill last time.

So, yeah, I still think about it.

lovescats3 · 14/04/2023 22:15

I think about it every day because despite being fully vaccinated I got it last year and it has damaged my heart

Shuggie1234 · 14/04/2023 22:22

Still wear a mask at work as it’s compulsory. Also had covid for second time 4 weeks ago and husband last week. And I developed a heart condition after having covid a year ago. So yes I think about it every single day when I’m taking the 19 tablets I take every day that I now take due to heart condition and long covid.

Anonymouseposter · 14/04/2023 23:03

Zebeddee55 I do hope your husband pulls through.

Has anyone noted that we stopped collecting Covid statistics about 3 weeks ago and in the last few weeks there seems to be a lot of Covid about? Did the statisticians see it coming?
We have to live with it now and can't avoid social contact but it seems reckless (and selfish) to take no precautions at all and for employers to penalize people who stay off work with Covid. Not testing if ill sems wrong to me too.

YearoftheRabbit23 · 15/04/2023 00:10

@Anonymouseposter hospitals are also going to stop testing on admission (the cynical amongst us may say this is so that the shocking statistics on hospital acquired infections can no longer be tracked - they've been at about 30 percent with a 10 percent death rate...)

So basically the only data we have is those with COVID on their death certificates.

As I said earlier, the country has totally given up on public health when it comes to COVID.

YearoftheRabbit23 · 15/04/2023 00:24

So many people talking about wet wipes and antibacterial hand wash. But COVID is an airborne disease. You breathe it in. Infection through contact with things is much much rarer. Three years in and people still don't understand how it's transmitted. Not helped by the WHO trying to deny it's airborne at a crucial stage in the pandemic.

Please focus on opening windows for ventilation, pushing for HEPA filters in enclosed spaces, and wearing proper filtering FFP2 masks instead. This will help with all respiratory viruses not just COVID.

@DoraSpenlow
sorry to hear about your cousin and a man in your village.

We’ve all had different experiences, and mine was that my children are still suffering the consequences in delays in healthcare and education due to the lockdown measures. My Gran now can’t walk because her regular walks out with family were banned and the care home staff didn’t bother to try get her out of her chair.

My Dad has stage 4 cancer because the GP refused to see him.

So yeah, I’m still thinking about that

doubtfulguest · 15/04/2023 01:06

Hadn't much until this last week. People I know starting to test positive again. Person I care for just tested positive and care agency I work for have reinstated masks due to high level of cases. West Midlands. I suspect lots of mild symptoms are covid.

BooseysMom · 15/04/2023 02:42

Torturedsoul · 13/04/2023 17:40

Like @Babdoc, every damn day due to Long Covid and all the issues a mild infection has left me with.

Yes I'm the same. Had it twice and all the vaccines and this last time has really took it out of me and I'm left with sinus issues I've never had before..esp bad tinnitus. It can't just go away. My work wanted me to follow the rules on testing before coming back but it is NHS.

GoldenAye · 15/04/2023 05:21

@maddening

But this is the same for lots of illnesses - I had a gall bladder removal- I unfortunately had a major complication which has only a 1% chance of occurring- it does not mean that no-one else should have a gall bladder removed despite the hospital stays, pain and 7 weeks recovery I endured.

I was unaware gall bladder disease (and gall bladder removal) was contagious and had killed millions of people across the world in a short period of time.

That is obviously not what I was saying, I was saying that many illnesses and conditions- whether contagious or not - have potential risks for a minority and in some cases the impact is huge, it does not mean that we should all live our lives thinking about all these very common illnesses at all times, to do so would drive us all to anxiety or depression.

Covid is now one of many illnesses that for most is mild or a rough cold type impact and unfortunately for some it is worse - which is tha case for many viruses and bacterial infections if you wish to only consider contagious illness, and many viruses leave people with chronic fatigue just like covid and long covid. And beyond the contagious many illness, conditions and their treatments also have a harder impact for minority and some have a smaller survival rate- eg certain cancers.

The point is that we can't all live our lives ruminating about covid, or all the other illnesses, as that would be mentally damaging, yes if you or a loved one suffers badly from one of the thousands of possible illnesses then it will be all you think about, but others not thinking about it at all times is fine and right imo.

And my point is the comparison doesn't make sense as a. the disease isn't contagious, b. hasn't killed millions in the space in two or so years, or infected billions, or c. caused societal upheaval. It caused upheaval to you, but not others. It also doesn't make sense when you consider that Covid, as a vascular virus, can cause other long-term problems.

I see what you're attempting to say, but I'm a bit weary of tired analogies.

IClaudine · 15/04/2023 09:34

I don't think about it too much other than to hope neither of us get it again. It was really nasty. My DH was quite ill with it and it was a real nightmare as it got to the point where I was almost unable to cope with looking after him and didn't know what to do.

youshouldnthaveasked · 15/04/2023 09:48

The numbers are really skewed. The figures every day showed the ‘deaths with covid” not deaths due to covid. If someone died from a car accident and happened to have covid it was put down as a covid death. So wrong and scaremongering

Philadelfina · 15/04/2023 09:54

I don’t necessarily think about it but I certainly am constantly aware of it, as someone with lasting impact of covid. I dread getting it again ( and before anyone says it I’m the same for any sort of respiratory illness). I am due to fly in a few weeks and will be taking responsibility for myself wearing a proper mask. I expect to be the only one. I cannot bear the flippant comments from those who were obviously affected as we all were, but didn’t suffer losses including loss of previous good health.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 15/04/2023 09:56

Yes, it affects many decisions I make. I am carer for my 80 year DM who is a cancer patient. She caught Covid in January and tested positive for 21 days, but is still unwell.

Oh, this almost makes me feel nostalgic! The car crash/covid scenario so beloved of conspiracy theorists! You have missed the boat really as this was doing the rounds back in 2020.
