Does anyone think about Covid anymore?

Feels like measures have sort of.. disappeared. Virtually no precautions whatsoever anywhere these days , not even light measures

My CEV mum doesn’t even mention it or bother with a mask anymore.

It’s like it’s gone away but obviously it has not.

Only when I see people looking terrified wearing masks to the shops or shopping centres and feeling terribly sorry for them

BashirWithTheGoodBeard · 15/04/2023 10:37

There's no specific mention of mask laws, to be fair to him. Or not in this article anyway. The quote used is quite broad and could cover a number of possibilities.

That said, the masking ship has very much sailed. The days when the general public were willing to engage with it have long gone. Some people, sure, but he clearly wants the number to be much higher and that's not happening. There's nobody who'd be capable of bringing the population along with the idea, especially as we now know widespread masking doesn't prevent Omicron ripping through a population.

He'd do better using his platform to make the case for better ventilation and air quality.

BashirWithTheGoodBeard · 15/04/2023 10:38

Sorry, pressed send too soon. I meant to say, I know he is doing that here but it inevitably gets bound up with the mask stuff and people don't want to hear it. Dilutes the message.

Highdaysandholidays1 · 15/04/2023 11:34

I think not testing on entering hospital and then not trying to stop it spreading in hospital (e.g. through HEPA filters, masks) is a huge mistake, also does not allow us to see what % are hospital acquired infections. People in hospital are naturally more vulnerable, they are the ones with pre-existing conditions who may be more badly affected or die of Covid. If we are focused on proportionate risk, they are the most vulnerable and it seems very misguided to simply spread an airborne virus round this already ill population. Rest of society- take your chances, wear an N95 if you prefer (I don't), but not in hospital or care homes.

Creepyrosemary · 15/04/2023 11:37

The virus has weakened to a common cold. It's not a problem anymore. I currently have covid and in my country there are no restrictions anymore. I stay a distance from people but have done the weekly shop.

lovescats3 · 15/04/2023 11:38

Long covid is not fatigue alone, it also is heart and lung damage, other organ damage including the liver and kidneys .also we were able to stop lockdowns because of the vaccines, without them many more would have died and had long term health problems and no I am not a lockdown lover it badly affected my kids at university and school

lovescats3 · 15/04/2023 11:40

Apparently after Spanish flu people tried to completely forget it ever happened, unfortunately with covid people whose health it has wrecked can't

lovescats3 · 15/04/2023 11:42

The government don't give a shit about it now because to focus on it reminds us of their partying and the fact they stole money for useless PPE and gave it to their mates

Saniflo · 15/04/2023 11:45

Some people are still banging on about it sadly. My neighbour is obsessed. Always posting stuff online and insisting people wear masks in her house. She is a nut job though tbf. Most normal people are just getting on with their lifes.

Highdaysandholidays1 · 15/04/2023 11:45

@lovescats3 I think that's right, people who are not currently affected very much do want to move on, forget about it, which just isn't possible if you have had someone die or you are life-changingly ill because of it yourself. They don't want to hear that that might happen to them, not now of course, but in the future, or they might need hospital treatment, get Covid and get quite sick, or get Long Covid, or their mum might die early in a care home. I get this as I want to move on and not think about Covid myself! But I think repeated infections of this type which are more drastic than the average cold for a good % and are more frequent than the flu (my kids have had far more Covid than flu in their lives) are going to have a long-term and quite harmful impact, I wouldn't be surprised if average life expectancy goes down and disabilities go up (as Long Covid also is linked to worse mental health, as well as fatigue, heart disease, strokes).

It's so easy to think it won't happen to you, until it does.

I don't live in a state of fear at all. I live a completely normal life and accept Covid as the current risk for that. I'd like our governments to acknowledge, scientifically research and put in preventive measures to stop cumulative damage due to Covid-19 over the long term and they are not doing this. So worrying.

IncompleteSenten · 15/04/2023 11:48

Sometimes.
It's not going anywhere so it's just about getting used to it like we have the flu and noro etc.

Yes because I know someone with it now and it's nasty

13Bastards · 15/04/2023 12:03

Not sure what version you have @Creepyrosemary but I have it right now and it's so much worse than a cold! I've been sick for a week, in bed for 3 of those with a high temperature, hallucinations for about 24 hours. Ache all over, a headache that nothing will touch, cough, and conjunctivitis! The dose I had in 2021 was very much like a cold, this has been the sickest I've ever felt.

ClaraThePigeon · 15/04/2023 12:07

Some of us aren't burying our head in the sand. We know it's still a risk, like a million other things that could happen to us but I'm not going to spend time fretting over those either and I got long Covid/PVFS the first bout of the 4x that I've had Covid but then I get PVFS every time I have a cold, a typical cold absolutely floors me for months so I'm semi-used to it, and yes I know others have been left with much more damage. I'm lucky in that respect.

I've had a lot of sudden and unexpected illnesses and accidents in my family. I'd go mad if I worried about all of them and after a few years of being beaten over the head with Covid restrictions and constant news, messages and adverts about it, it's hardly surprising that people want to move on. It's not realistic or fair to expect everyone to care about it as much as those affected by it do. We all have our own causes/issues that we prioritise.

IcedVimto · 15/04/2023 12:10

We don't mention it day to day, but DH has leukaemia and I currently have COIVD so we are dancing around the house trying to avoid each other. The last time he had it he ended up in hospital and was that ill I didn't think he would be coming home. Roll on the spring booster...

I have to agree - I'm feeling pretty rough at the moment, it's really affected my asthma and every bit of me aches.

ClaraThePigeon · 15/04/2023 12:13

It depends how a cold affects you. They aren't mild for everyone just as Covid isn't severe for everyone. Colds are severe for me. Even worse than Covid, and I was badly ill with that 4x. It takes me months to recover. I've found myself in hospital a number for of times and get Post Viral Fatigue Syndrome every time and my PVFS symptoms have been worse with a cold than Covid though the Covid PVF is longer lasting.

ClaraThePigeon · 15/04/2023 12:14

P.S I hope that you recover soon with no long term effects.

Aishah231 · 15/04/2023 12:17

The media and politicians don't want to talk about it anymore. We might start asking for investigations into the cost and effectiveness of the madness they put us all through. A brief look into European mask wearing, lockdown, vaccine etc data will show nothing made any difference one way or the other.

We were out with the dog last weekend and a woman wearing a mask practically threw herself into a hedge to avoid having to walk past us.

Went for a diabetic eye check this morning.

My letter informed me that I needed to be masked up and should have a negative Covid test.

Pitched up. I was the only one in the waiting room wearing a mask and the nurse asked me to lower my mask! I've only just recovered from Covid.

No one gives a toss anymore.

This happened to me at a recent medical appointment, I was the only person wearing a mask and when I got into the consultation room I was told in quite an irritated manner that it was impossible to hear what I was saying with a mask on so could I please take it off, like I was some kind of neurotic person for wearing it. I said it was in the letter that I needed to wear one and they said oh we need to change that!

Fandabedodgy · 15/04/2023 12:23

Almost never think of it.

Unless I'm watching a drama filmed during that time which makes me shudder that we lived like that.

Some of the rules were so obviously bonkers with hindsight.

I'd be highly unimpressed by complaints that I'd done what they asked of me. They do indeed need to change it!

13Bastards · 15/04/2023 12:39

Thanks @ClaraThePigeon colds usually are ok unless they go to my chest as I'm asthmatic. I was so ill Monday I genuinely thought something was seriously wrong with me- me having covid didn't even cross my mind until DP was tested at work Tuesday. I'm a fairly fit and active person so to be this ill was a shock.

I'm up and about today for the first time since last Sunday but am getting very tired very easily. I miss exercise.

Plus side- having zero appetite means I've lost 3kg Grin
