C-section not real birth

I was just scrollling through Facebook and saw a post about women getting shamed for c-sections. I’ve had 3 vaginal births never a c section so I have never personally experienced this kind of…. Well wtf is it…. Ridiculousness. Is this genuinely a real thing?? Are there women out there being shamed for having c-sections? If so Jesus Christ. Seriously?!

Without C-sections I wouldn't exist. My big brother would have died along with my mum when he was being born. And had my mum survived that, I would've died during childbirth.

I love modern medicine.

Washingforweeks · 12/04/2023 21:14

Perfectly put

@Hardbackwriter So not wanting an episiotomy etc. makes me a mysogynist? It's my perineum and my body, and I should be allowed to decide what happens to it without shaming or name calling.

Washingforweeks · 12/04/2023 21:16

Personally I can tell I’ve had 3 vaginal births. It’s not awful but it’s nothing like it was! I struggle to see how it can go back to pre babies tbh unless stitches maybe? X

People do say this. Really fucking stupid people say all manner of crap.

It was your wording not the sentiment. It's fine to say you don't want a vaginal birth. It's not ok to describe medics heads up to your cervix etc

Meandfour · 12/04/2023 21:16

Midwinter89 · 12/04/2023 20:32

@Meka23 c secs are much more expensive due to staffing required, so no elective c sections shouldn’t be allowed in NHS

You sound rather uneducated on the subject and I’m quite embarrassed for you. You clearly aren’t aware that in many cases, csections for breech babies, csections for twins, csections for premature babies are referred to as ELCS as they’re planned and therefore not emergencies.

My sister had a full surgical team for her vaginal delivery. Do you want to send her a bill because she didn’t just use a midwife and a student?

PrawnofthePatriarchy · 12/04/2023 21:17

My NCT teacher came round to tell I shouldn't feel like a failure after 46 hours in labour and an ECS. I told her frostily that I didn't feel like a failure. I was very pleased with my healthy baby. We didn't use the NCT with our second baby.

Americano75 · 12/04/2023 21:17

If a baby comes out of you, you've given birth. It's not a hard concept. My second birth was so traumatic I would have demanded a section for my third if I had started to suspect the labour was going the same way.

How you chose to give birth is absolutely your own decision and I'm really glad you were able to chose to do so in the way that felt best and most suitable for you. It's the language you use to describe vaginal birth that's misogynistic.

qazxc · 12/04/2023 21:19

Yep, it's a thing. I was told that dad's birth was "cheating" and one very weird

PoptyPinnnngggg · 12/04/2023 21:19

Midwinter89 · 12/04/2023 20:26

@PoptyPinnnngggg did you pay privately for elected c sec or use the NHS? It’s quite expensive as a whole surgical team is required vs a midwife and a student for a natural birth.

My C-section was NHS. Yes costs of a straight forward no intervention vaginal birth are cheaper. But as soon as intervention comes in they are on a par (and was why NICE recommends C-section as an option). As a another poster has said, even a vaginal birth can involve the whole surgical team and be very expensive.

I've never heard people talk about the costs of a vaginal birth when weighing up the options, but they are almost always brought up by people discussing C-sections. In a scenario where it was known that a vaginal birth was going to cost more than a C-section, I wonder how many people would take that into consideration when making a decision? And how many people would opt for the cheaper option? Obviously the risks are different, but they are not necessarily worse/better, just different which makes comparison difficult.

Elective means planned c sections when they know woman will be unable to deliver naturally and plan section ahead and when woman is in labour and has emergency section complication rate increases, elective dosent stand generally for CBA to labour.

Twizbe · 12/04/2023 21:20

@KittyAlfred when I had my first baby I was totally in the 'no point in a birth plan camp'. I kept mine to just the things I could control (having DH tell me the sex etc)

With my second I had more idea of what I didn't want from my first birth, but still the plan was vague.

It's only now that I'm doing some further reading for academic purposes that I've changed my mind. I've realised that the point of the birth plan isn't to have the 'perfect birth'. The point is to think through the eventualities, to give women the information and confidence to make decisions on the fly that they are comfortable with. The key to a positive birth is feeling that birth is done with you and not to you.

Midwinter89 · 12/04/2023 20:04

Even though its wrong and rude-
I suppose women who had long painful natural births sometimes crave acknowledgement that they made that sacrifice/went through that for their child?

A pal of mine had a pain free scheduled c sec and her bf was talking about childbirth as if we both went through the same
thing. No mate I had 3 days of agony.

Excuse me @Midwinter89 are you saying a c-section is not a painful birth? That women who have had c-sections haven’t had a painful birth? You do know a c-section slices through your stomach and all your muscles and your uterus? Does that sound pain free to you? I am 9 months post c-section and still have pain. Do you still have pain everyday from your birth? Are you this stupid in understanding most things in life or just what a c-section actually is?

Washingforweeks · 12/04/2023 21:21

I’m sorry to hear that 😔
don’t be so hard on yourself xxxxxxx

YirumaFan1 · 12/04/2023 21:22

And I bloody well sacrificed to birth my child too @Midwinter89 not that you would acknowledge it. Why is your 3 day pain superior? Well done on proving @Washingforweeks point

allfurcoatnoknickers · 12/04/2023 21:22

@Hardbackwriter Ok, I do not want a medical professional to insert their hand into my cervix and then sweep said hand backwards and forward to remove the placenta from my uterine wall.

qazxc · 12/04/2023 21:22

Yep it's a thing. Dd birth has been described to me as " cheating" and one weird woman at the supermarket tills told me that it was " wrong because you are meant to suffer for the original sin".
If I hadn't had the emergency c section both me and Dd would have died.

Washingforweeks · 12/04/2023 21:24

Oh god i must of blanked out the cervical rummaging it all just came flooding back 🤮

Hankunamatata · 12/04/2023 21:24

The term 'birth experience' does make me laugh. 3 vaginal births 'natural' and none of them were wonderful or amazing. I was bloody glad they were over, completely knackered and my bits were ragged. The thought of another vaginal birth makes me feel all crawly.

The c section might have been pain free for the couple of hours it lasts but the following days and weeks were not..

midwinter you seem to be really
misguided about c sections

You can't say rummage! That makes you a mysogynist! 😂

Washingforweeks · 12/04/2023 21:26

To say it’s the most ‘natural’ thing for us to do. None of it feels natural- we need a lot of interference and help. The thought of going through pregnancy and childbirth again knocks me sick
