To be honest @technotstarnotechstar I don’t give too much credence to NHS advice on nutrition having seen what they were advising my type 2 diabetic MIL to eat.

We evolved eating mainly meat and fish and some berries and above ground veg. We were Hunter/gatherers. And we haven’t really evolved much more than that. We didn’t cultivate crops. We didn’t eat grains.

Exactly.

A really interesting discussion. Those of you following a keto diet, could you give me an example of your daily menu please? Like some others, I'm unsure of the best approach to losing weight. I seem to do ok during the main part of the day but then end up eating chocolate/biscuits/crisps every evening and totally undo all my hard work from earlier

😂

Yeah, it's so funny that you think you're consuming thousands of calories a week and losing weight 😂😂

CatchYouOnTheFlippetyFlop · 13/04/2023 15:23

And we also lived in houses made of shit, twigs and mud, and walked round in fur skin, but civilization has changed.

Yes, there is shite freely available, but there's plenty of healthy food about too. Doesn't mean you have to eat the same diet as neaderthals to optimise your body and health.

Peridot1 · 13/04/2023 15:51

I wasn’t aware I said you did @CatchYouOnTheFlippetyFlop. I was explaining that low carb based on meat and fish etc is how we ate. So it’s not a dangerous way to eat. Which was in response to another poster.

Eating unrefined, whole foods, meat, fish, etc is a generally accepted way of eating healthily. That's not the same as keto. Coffee with oil and butter, saturated fat, etc. The way most people interpret keto probably isn't a great way to eat.

Anyway, eating for optimal health and eating to lose weight are NOT the same.

This morning for breakfast I had scrambled eggs with some spinach, a few chopped cherry tomatoes and a bit of grated mozzarella in it. Lunch I've had a chicken and avocado salad and for dinner I'm having steak with roasted cauliflower and brocolli. I drink lots of water through the day.

I still eat things like curry but with cauliflower rice instead of proper rice, I make burgers but don't have a bun, roast dinners but with roasted celeriac instead of potatoes, lasagna but using aubergine slices instead of pasta. I'm not super strict with the vegetables/fruit so will have some tomatoes, onions, peppers etc. but a lot of people on keto avoid those completely.

Try calorie deficit before you cut out any one food group.

It's changed my life with regards to the way I look at food.

I started at the beginning of January and I've lost 40lb.

I restrict no food groups. I eat healthy in the main, but I also have treats when I want. I just account for them.

The app Nutracheck is so good and easy to use.

Not sure if you are on tiktok, but some of the calorie deficit content creators are amazing to follow. So knowledgeable.

All I can say, is it works so good for me, like a switch has gone off and everything has just clicked into place.

Since this January? 😲

Duhduhdub · 13/04/2023 17:57

I tried keto once. I lasted a week - I lost half a stone but I had the worst headaches I’ve ever experienced

SixPurpleChairs · 13/04/2023 17:56

Since this January? 😲

Yes. Jan 3rd I started to be precise lol, when I started back work after the Christmas holidays.

I braved the scales and nearly had a heart attack. I had been in denial for a long time, but I'm mid-40's and enough was enough. My health was suffering. My knees were awful and I felt like an old woman.

My sister had lost a lot of weight doing the same, but I thought 'oh no I'm not doing that, too much faffing', but I've never looked back.

I still have 2.5st to lose, but I know I can achieve this now. It seemed insurmountable before. I've done keto, Ww, slimming world, Michael Mosely 800cals, none of which o personally found sustainable.

I also have been doing 30 minute YouTube walking workout videos most days, which normally means I hit 10k steps throughout the day.

Although I am aware the minute amount of impact exercise has on weight loss and exercise for my health rather than thinking it will assist with weight loss.

Thanks for your advice everyone
iv decided to do low carb for a while as I’m carb addicted and so triggers my binge eating
I want to feel good and have energy

quick question is net carbs the same as the ‘of which sugars’ on food packaging
do I count the whole carbs or the or which sugars part?

OP posts:
technotstarnotechstar · 13/04/2023 22:51

@peridot , I think your response was aimed at me. However I think you misunderstood my point. I think we eat too much refined carbs and sugar but I don't think cutting out all carbs is necessary..My initial post linked to an article detailing the scientifically researched effects of long term keto on the body. My point is going from one extreme to another is no better. There is a middle ground.

800 calories a day? That seems very low. I really worry about working when eating so little.

It is dangerously low. The brain alone needs 400-500 calories per day to function.

No, it isn't. The 'of which sugars' are how many of the carbs are sugar. Net carbs is the carbs minus the fibre.

Generally, if the carbs are 5g or under per 100g, its an ok food.

This is what you call a calorie deficit. If you add your calorie intake throughout the week, you can bet your bottom dollar you are in a calorie deficit.

The ONLY way to lose weight, is by eating less calories than your body uses to function on a day to day basis.

Nothing else works.

You can use your calorie deficit by restricting your diet i.e., meat, eggs and veg only, OR you can choose to spend your deficit on what you want - i.e. have a portion of rice with your curry, but count it in your daily allowance. No need to have grated cauliflower with it if it falls within your daily/weekly allowance.

I'm loosely following fast800 and my week 3 WI is tomorrow morning...First week I lost 4lbs, second week I lost 3lbs and up until today (I'm a serial scale hopper), I've lost another 4lbs - but hopefully more tomorrow morning 🤞🏻

I also have an UAT so I struggle to lose weight. I have the red, blue and new keto books and I also use my fitness Pal to keep track.

Re hunger, I find I'm now not particularly hungry, so the last 3 days, I've only had OMAD.

This is a fast800 cake I made last weekend... absolutely bloody lovely!

It definitely works but is hard to stick to in my experience. It’s so restrictive. It does kill all carb cravings though.

I do find intermittent fasting to be a better choice. Partly because I never wanted to give up Lindt!! I now do 16:8 every day and 24hr fasts regularly. Starting a 36hr today, really looking forward to it.

Yeah, I wonder how many of the 800ers actually consulted doctor (real life one) as advised because that is supposed to happen.
If non diabetics wish to eat like diabetics, fine, but denying basics like you really can't lose unles you are in calorie deficit, is delusional and behaviour of some keto and low carb is quite frankly, culty.

But then, we are on website where adults claim to put weight on on 1000cal🤷🏻.... Nothing should surprise us

If you're on the UK then look at the total carbohydrate count on the pack. Try to stay below 5g carbohydrate per 100g. Some packaging will show per portion instead. In the US you have to subtract fibre from the total carbs to get net carbs. If you're trying low carb then you could check out the Bootcamp threads for some tips on getting started: https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/lowcarbbootcamp/4710776-2023-low-carb-bootcamp-the-prep-thread?flipped=1

Thank you NeedSleepNow for being kind enough to answer my question. I've decided to try it, starting Monday (when ds goes back to school,) so will meal plan this weekend and buy in what I'll need.

Ooh, and how do you roast your cauliflower and broccoli NeedSleepNow? Do you pre boil them first and then roast or just spritz with oil and put them straight in to roast from raw? Sorry for further questions.

I just chop them up raw in to florets drizzle a little oil over, season with salt and pepper and bung then in the oven on a tray to roast. I particularly like cauliflower roasted in a little chilli oil!

I don't think that following keto is good for absolutely everyone. I myself tried for 2 or 3 weeks and it was a freaking torture. I was constantly constipated, bad breath, headaches, foul mood and felt crap in general. Oh, and the weight loss wasn't really amazing/any different to when I simply followed calorie counting method.
I also feel that demonising carbs is just a "fashion" of a kind. This little vid is pretty much covering it.. :)
