To be getting more not less depressed about Brexit as time goes on

It all seems so pointless doesn't it, I feel sorry that some- probably many- people were duped into voting for it, I feel annoyed that the 48 percent who voted remain have been completely ignored, annoyed about all the divisions it has caused our country and all the rows, and overall just really fed up with the state we are in now. I thought it would be getting better by now but actually feel worse about it now than I did at the time.

I’m in France at the moment on holiday and my children talk about living here one day. It’s possible for my boys if they got a visa, but my daughter has complex medical needs (a bit like being on dialysis) so wouldn’t be able to live in the EU.

teneastereggs · 11/04/2023 23:08

Still devastated here. Still can’t believe people were able to vote to take away the rights my children were born with.

Me too and I grew up feeling very much a part of Europe and I loved the fact we could live and work in the other countries.

My FIL voted to leave because ‘things were fine before we joined the EU’. He cannot see how trade and movement of people around the world and Europe has changed in all that time and that ‘taking back control’ works both ways.

It’s now become a taboo subject because he is so blinkered.

Yes, I understand that, but Brexit was years ago, and people have to move on!

Sorry, this was in answer to @Greenshake I’m in France at the moment on holiday and my children talk about living here one day. It’s possible for my boys if they got a visa, but my daughter has complex medical needs (a bit like being on dialysis) so wouldn’t be able to live in the EU.

The IMF economic outlook report today certainly wouldn't make you rejoice in Brexit.

teneastereggs · 11/04/2023 23:10

Voted to stay in but even at that, I don't think I anticipated what extent of damage it would do to us over time 😭

Yes there was all this taunting about 'project fear' but the reality seems even worse than what was predicted somehow.

It's a bit weird to feel depressed about Brexit 7 years on

What else is going on in your life?

This is exactly what I am getting at!

sesamestreetmechanics · 11/04/2023 23:12

I think until what's happened happened the majority wouldn't have left it alone until it happened - we would still be having N Farage on TV blaming EU for everything and anything.

Greenshake · 11/04/2023 23:13

@mummeeee, sorry to hear about your daughter - but are you saying that she is now actually prohibited from living in Europe due to a health condition ?

I think you're right there - it IS even worse than "project fear" anticipated.😟

Agree OP. How we let people vote on something so final defeats me. I blame Cameron. Twat

He would have but he was never that mainstream popular. People used to laugh at UKIP. It was about the Tories worried they'd lose some of their vote.

It's not 7 years since we actually left and there were plenty of people moaning on from 1973 when we joined until we actually left so not sure why we are supposed to now just shut up about it when it's spoilt everything about this country, removed our rights and made us poorer.

Tinkerbyebye · 11/04/2023 23:15

It was 6 years ago, get over it

This is what I’m saying - it’s not weird to still be upset. Imagine having to tell your 14 year old that she was born with lots of possibilities. When she became ill, she lost lots of those (like being able to apply for a visa in the US/Australia/rest of the world), then people voted to take away the other possibilities (like being able to live and work in the EU, with its reciprocal healthcare agreement)

DuncinToffee · 11/04/2023 23:15

Greenshake · 11/04/2023 22:58

Well, what do you think should be done about it then?

Maybe the UK could try joining the thing that Sunak was telling Northern Ireland was such special benefit and privilege

I think it's called the single market

teneastereggs · 11/04/2023 23:16

It's so wrong that it happened and that lies were told in a way that would be prohibited in a general election. When it had far more long lasting effects.

How can you be annoyed that the minority who voted remain were ignored. The same would have happened if the vote had gone the other way. The remainers thought they had it in the bag and still can't accept it after all this time. I voted leave and am glad we are out.

teneastereggs · 11/04/2023 23:18

The vote was, but the actual thing is a continuing event, making us as a country poorer and will continue to.

It's a fundamental change. To the fabric of our society, to the economic and social futures of ourselves and our children, and represented a hugely depressing reality about the number of people in my own country who made such a sad, small choice. It makes it embarrassing every time I step out of the UK into the EU.

I don't think about it every day. But anytime I do it remains with a profound sadness. I don't think that's weird at all.

mummeeee · 11/04/2023 23:19

Greenshake · 11/04/2023 23:13

@mummeeee, sorry to hear about your daughter - but are you saying that she is now actually prohibited from living in Europe due to a health condition ?

Yes.
she needs iv medication that is provided via a care package. It has an expiry of 3 weeks, receive a delivery at home every 2 weeks. Lifelong.
reciprocal healthcare agreement meant she could have been provided with it in any EU country.
now we can’t leave the country for more than 2 weeks cos it can’t be shipped and can’t be provided (without us paying privately 1000s) other than in the Uk

The vote was seven years ago.
Brexit was in 2020, with proper effect from Jan 2021, and consequences are becoming more visible only now.

Greenshake · 11/04/2023 23:21

This post is very interesting. Are people saying that they would ideally want another vote to look at re-joining? Even though that would be totally undemocratic and likely to have no clear outcome?

Undemocratic how?
