It’s the Easter holidays. Not half term?!

What is this new craze for calling the school holidays “half term”?! I noticed it a bit in the Christmas holiday and now we’re in the Easter holidays I’m surrounded by random parents who refer to it being half term.

It’s not half term!! It’s the main school holiday!

This isn’t people with no children/grown up children either. It’s people with children currently at school.

If it was a friend saying it I’d ask them what the fudge they were saying. But it’s not - it’s parents at holiday clubs/out and about etc.

”beautiful day to be at the zoo isn’t it?”
”yes, such great weather for half term!”
me “??????”

Not people I feel I can say “it’s not half term?!” to because it’s just casual passing conversation.

But I’m also overheating it being called half term.

Phew. Please stop it if it’s you. Because you’re wrong. It’s not half term. AIBU?

I’m overhearing. Not overheating. Although maybe I’m overheating a bit… 🤣

This is about the 3rd thread I've seen on this subject. Who cares really?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 11/04/2023 13:06

Never heard this and can’t get excited about it. Why does it matter?

Doihavetogotoworkdotcom1 · 11/04/2023 13:07

😴

I've heard it all the time. And it doesn't matter in the same way climate change matters but it's annoying because it's wrong. It is not the half-term holiday because we are not halfway through a term. It's just lazy.

OriginalUsername2 · 11/04/2023 13:09

I only know the official names for each term and break because I made a yearly planner for myself using the school’s calendars To be honest it was a blur of “half-terms” for me before that and the kids told me when they were coming up. . I’m scatterbrained.

DancingWithTheMoonlitKnight · 11/04/2023 13:09

Meh. Nothing wrong with being lazy.

Slimjimtobe · 11/04/2023 13:10

It’s the Easter holidays and end of a full term — ughhh

StopitSarah · 11/04/2023 13:10

It matters in the same way it would matter and irritate if someone called Wednesday “the weekend” or November “summer”.

Its not half term. I find it slightly 🤯🤯🤯 when I hear it and initially I thought “wait? WHAT?! Is it?!”

Of course it doesn’t matter as much as proper issues of global importance. But it’s still very, very annoying.

If anyone reading this calls the holidays half term - why?! I’d love to know!

Half term is the week (or two) in the middle of a term. It is not the 2-8 week break we have at Christmas/Easter/Summer!

(it’s amazing I felt the need to even say this)

StopitSarah · 11/04/2023 13:12

@OriginalUsername2 you really wouldn’t have a mental overview of the start and end of the three main terms?

OP posts:
DancingWithTheMoonlitKnight · 11/04/2023 13:13

It might annoy you but I couldn't care less so to me YABU.

StopitSarah · 11/04/2023 13:14

I’m as lazy as they come. But it’s not hard to know if we’re in a school holiday or half term. If you have children at school.

For those who don’t care. Have a lovely rest of your Monday.

I've got one on a two-week Easter holiday, and one with a different term structure who is officially on a one-week half-term.

I'm still calling it Easter though.

I have previously been asked what I've got planned at half term so talked about the plans for Whitsun to realise that they meant Easter... they were school staff too. Use the wrong language and you'll get the wrong answer!

StopitSarah · 11/04/2023 13:15

@UrgentScurryfunge ok! So some people actually are officially on half term?! Wow. Thank you!

UrgentScurryfunge · 11/04/2023 13:16

I've heard people call the summer holidays half term too. Absolutely nothing half term about that!

Annoying when someone says it's Monday when it's Tuesday 😝

Chocolatelabradorsarethebest · 11/04/2023 13:17

Oh for a life where this is my biggest concern…

StopitSarah · 11/04/2023 13:18

@StaceySolomonSwash rather my point. Apparently this sort of this isn’t annoying to @DancingWithTheMoonlitKnight though!

OP posts:
StopitSarah · 11/04/2023 13:19

@Chocolatelabradorsarethebest it’s not my main concern. I have about 749 concerns that come before this one. But if I posted about my main concern it would be a very different thread…

Maybe what they're thinking when they say it is that it's the end of half a term. Which it is. But either way, who honestly cares.

Lcb123 · 11/04/2023 13:21

I wish I had the head space to notice something like this, let alone allow it to bother me. Maybe get a hobby?

StopitSarah · 11/04/2023 13:23

@Lcb123 lovely idea. What do you suggest?

OP posts:
StopitSarah · 11/04/2023 13:23

@GiltEdges me. I care. It’s not half term. But have a lovely rest of your Wednesday.

Don't think OP needs a hobby, just a grip.
