It’s the Easter holidays. Not half term?!

What is this new craze for calling the school holidays “half term”?! I noticed it a bit in the Christmas holiday and now we’re in the Easter holidays I’m surrounded by random parents who refer to it being half term.

It’s not half term!! It’s the main school holiday!

This isn’t people with no children/grown up children either. It’s people with children currently at school.

If it was a friend saying it I’d ask them what the fudge they were saying. But it’s not - it’s parents at holiday clubs/out and about etc.

”beautiful day to be at the zoo isn’t it?”
”yes, such great weather for half term!”
me “??????”

Not people I feel I can say “it’s not half term?!” to because it’s just casual passing conversation.

But I’m also overheating it being called half term.

Phew. Please stop it if it’s you. Because you’re wrong. It’s not half term. AIBU?

@SocialLite Oh god yes! As well as "2 bedroomed house" (How can a house be bedroomed?!)
Another one that takes WILL POWER to ignore, is when some says they/someone else have "Mental Health" instead of mental health issues. The will power is required to stop myself from explaining that everyone has mental health ffs

Oh @SchoolTripDrama I am SO with you on that one. I thought I was the only person that's bothered by that. You wouldn't say 'oh, I have physical health' !!

Yes, it doesn't really matter.. mental health, half-term.. we get the meaning. But it's not a race to the bottom. Using words accurately shouldn't be seen as being 'fussy'.

This. Get some real problems!

StopitSarah · 11/04/2023 14:49

@Picassa and @Irritateandunreasonable I think we’ve established that I care. As do a few others.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 11/04/2023 14:54

About a month ago someone in out class WhatsApp group asked the dates of half term.

I gave them the dates for the half term at the end of May / beginning of June. Turned out they meant the Easter holidays!

I would say it’s an easy mistake to make, but it’s also an easy one to get right.

StopitSarah · 11/04/2023 14:57

@Muchtoomuchtodo I have only recently heard people get it wrong. It would be a really hard mistake for me to make. Terms/half terms/holidays are so ingrained in my head and diary.

OP posts:
StopitSarah · 11/04/2023 14:57

@Picassa bit mean. It is possible to find every day things annoying at the same time as having a full life with its many ups and downs.

Not intended to be mean op but seriously so what if people call it half term- people obviously mean the children are off school, it’s splitting hairs imo.

CheriseNuland · 11/04/2023 15:00

So you’re hearing people calling the end of term holiday ie the Easter break, ‘half term’?

Never heard or seen that myself but yes that is a bit odd if so. Maybe half term is becoming a generic word for school holidays? Like hoover.

RosieLemonadeAndSugar · 11/04/2023 15:02

I said half term the other day... slipped out 😂

Didn't realise it was so important though tbh.

AuroraForever · 11/04/2023 15:03

For us it was always half term unless it was ‘summer holidays’ or ‘Christmas holidays’. But in the grand scheme of things it doesn’t actually really bloody matter at all!

BeeBB · 11/04/2023 15:04

I think this really isn’t worth worrying about getting worked up about or starting a thread about take a chill pill OP.

hopefully not teaching grammar…

Nope!

Because I don't use an iPad that autocorrects incorrectly when I do my job.

I actually work in pastoral care - something I feel would be lost on you.

mumlikeaboss · 11/04/2023 15:13

I have never seen/heard this but it would properly piss me off.

It would be no different to calling all bank holidays 'Sundays'... Technically it more or less means the same thing, most people are off work and the schools are closed for the day, but it JUST MAKES NO SENSE! Why would you use the wrong word???

NonJeNeRegretteRien · 11/04/2023 15:13

You sound hopping mad about this, OP.

If AIBU was only ever used for topics that really MATTERED it would get used a good deal less than it does 😁😁

I now feel an almost uncontrollable urge to start a thread about the use of punctuation though...

neveradullmoment99 · 11/04/2023 15:18

For many it's not Easter, it's the Spring holidays!🤣

MissDollyMix · 11/04/2023 15:22

I’m 100% with you OP! I’ve noticed it a lot more too! And it’s irritating me!! It’s NOT half term so why say it is?

YukoandHiro · 11/04/2023 15:29

I heard it on the radio this morning and nearly exploded with rage. Where did it come from?

DancingWithTheMoonlitKnight · 11/04/2023 15:31

You nearly exploded with rage because someone said it was half term? Fuck me, I hope you are joking.

Oh yes! Mental health drives me nuts too. "I've got memorial health" - great! That's a good thing!
