It’s the Easter holidays. Not half term?!

What is this new craze for calling the school holidays “half term”?! I noticed it a bit in the Christmas holiday and now we’re in the Easter holidays I’m surrounded by random parents who refer to it being half term.

It’s not half term!! It’s the main school holiday!

This isn’t people with no children/grown up children either. It’s people with children currently at school.

If it was a friend saying it I’d ask them what the fudge they were saying. But it’s not - it’s parents at holiday clubs/out and about etc.

”beautiful day to be at the zoo isn’t it?”
”yes, such great weather for half term!”
me “??????”

Not people I feel I can say “it’s not half term?!” to because it’s just casual passing conversation.

But I’m also overheating it being called half term.

Phew. Please stop it if it’s you. Because you’re wrong. It’s not half term. AIBU?

Yeah I agree OP really annoying and becoming more common.

I've seen official things from places advertising 'half term' activities

ITS NOT HALF TERM!!

StopitSarah · 11/04/2023 13:28

@GiltEdges and you have a lovely October half term. Don’t forget Halloween!

@hellodarknessmyoldfriend22 I know what my hobby could be! I could email these places and check it’s the summer half term they mean. What fun.

For those who don’t care. Have a lovely rest of your Monday.

You’re really not as funny as you think you are😣

StopitSarah · 11/04/2023 13:30

I’m relieved I’m not the only one. I was worried that I was!

PriamFarrl · 11/04/2023 13:30

I’m with you op. But apparently it’s not cool to care that words have meanings.

StopitSarah · 11/04/2023 13:31

@BlackBarbies Actually I am. I identify as very funny.

OP posts:
StopitSarah · 11/04/2023 13:33

@PriamFarrl that’s the thing isn’t it. When people say it’s half term, my brain does a double check to make sure it is, actually, the Easter holidays. It’s really annoying. But it is interesting to know that some children actually are on half term (as a pp pointed out).

I'm with you OP. It's just wrong.

Sad to think there are parents out there who don't understand what a term is.

GOW56 · 11/04/2023 13:33

Maybe what they're thinking when they say it is that it's the end of half a term. Which it is. But either way, who honestly cares.
But it's not the end of half a term it's the end of a full term.
I agree OP it's annoying and I don't understand why people with school aw children would make that mistake

Arewehumanorarewecupboards · 11/04/2023 13:35

I think that you are very funny.

I don’t care about half term or not (adult dc so no longer means much to me). I have heard lots of people on holiday here with young dc saying that they are on their half term holibobs. That annoys me but it’s the holibob bit.

StopitSarah · 11/04/2023 13:35

@JoeLovesGina I thought that too. You’d have to be pretty disengaged not to know that a full term has ended and the summer term is about to start.

CLEO42 · 11/04/2023 13:36

I noticed this too OP and it's weird to me as well. When did it start? I wondered whether it was sime posh thing that has 'truckled down' and lo and behold I just checked the term dates for Eton their terms are known as 'Halves'

Coincidence? 🤔
Lol

When I first heard half term used for the Easter hols, I just thought the person speaking had made a slip of the tongue. Now I’ve heard it elsewhere it’s beginning to annoy me. You are not being unreasonable.

CLEO42 · 11/04/2023 13:37

*trickled down
Urghh fat fingers

StopitSarah · 11/04/2023 13:38

@CLEO42 🤣🤣🤣 I can safely reassure everyone that children at Eton are also enjoying their Easter holiday. I had two of them in my house last week 🤣🤣

OP posts:
StopitSarah · 11/04/2023 13:39

Thanks to everyone who also finds it annoying. My people. I will politely challenge it next time I hear it. So lazy. Maybe they put their school calendar in their chester drawers?

CLEO42 · 11/04/2023 13:39

Dammit @StopitSarah
I thought I had it sussed 😆

drumandthebass · 11/04/2023 13:40

Who actually cares!?

StopitSarah · 11/04/2023 13:40

@CLEO42 it was a good theory! I’d give you an A* for creative detective work!

OP posts:
StopitSarah · 11/04/2023 13:41

@drumandthebass hello! Nice to meet you. It’s me. I care. 👋🏻

OP posts:
BoswellTheScribe · 11/04/2023 13:41

I completely agree! I’ve also noticed this a lot! It’s not half term. Half term is the one week holiday in the middle of the term.
Autumn term = September to Christmas with half term usually at the end of October.
Then we have the Christmas holidays.
Spring term = January to Easter with half term usually in February.
Then we have the Easter holidays.
Summer term = March/April to July with half term in May.
Then we have the Summer holidays after which we’re back to the Autumn term.

StopitSarah · 11/04/2023 13:43

@BoswellTheScribe it is CRACKERS that you had to write that out. But clearly not everyone gets it. So thank you. How can school age parents be so disengaged that this really is confusing for them?!

OP posts:
Bluevelvetsofa · 11/04/2023 13:45

It annoys me too. It didn’t used to be the case that every holiday was called half term, but now it seems to be.
