Sainsburys now doing nectar price

Whateveryouwant1 · 11/04/2023 11:37

I've never really liked tesco club card prices because if you forget your club card you have to change your shopping habits for that shop and now sainsburys have followed suit with nectar prices!
Why can't supermarkets just either be price effective or just do deals like before? Can't stand this it'll be £8.10 without your nectar card or £4 with! Give me strength and reasonable prices ffs!

Isn't that the point though, none of these companies are giving out loyalty cards out of the goodness of their health. It's data mining basically.

I won't use Waitrose's any more since it's really rubbish nowadays and I will only use a loyalty card when I perceive that there is some material benefit to myself. No one is getting my data for nothing.

It's annoying but I understand why these shops do it.

Of course. But there's a difference between people choosing to have a loyalty card for points/vouchers, knowing they will be sharing their data with the company, and being almost compelled to sign up to a loyalty card in order to get the cheaper prices. And not everyone has an Aldi or lidl nearby or can drive to different supermarkets.( I completely agree with you about Waitrose)

Or you could get a Clubcard. They are free.

NOTHING is free! Wake up!

i am not sure that Nectar prices are actually available just by using your nectar card. Unless they've changed it recently, I've only got those prices when I used the Smartshop app. You do get the bonus points on certain items by using just the Nectar card, though, just not the prices. (With the Smartshop app you get both).

You can get your nectar card online with the Nectar app, as well as the other methods via the wallet or the stocard app.

Yep and I always forget to use the Smartshop thing. Partner uses it religiously to avoid checkouts but if I'm with him we also seem to get randomly stopped. I'm probably chucking things in the trolley and forgetting to swipe them.

latetothefisting · 11/04/2023 15:27

Can anyone who has a problem with companies getting their data explain why?
I don't get it

For one, I go to multiple different supermarkets so am sceptical about the amount of useful data they could glean from me anyway - I don't see how the fact that I occasionally buy x amounts of semi skimmed from tesco could be of any real use in terms of data collection when I don't buy it in any particular quantities or regularity (because I also buy milk from aldi, Sainsburies, lidl etc at other times)

Secondly even if I did do all my shopping at one place and they could work out exactly how often I bought milk and what type....so what? Why should I care? Its not exactly incriminating is it?

Precipice · 11/04/2023 15:37

If it's no real use to them, why would they be bothering with collecting it at all?

Apart from valuing privacy in its own right, the ability to profile users and user types is a step towards personalised pricing (which already exists online, in some scenarios).

All these cards are now on apps on phones. Whether you agree with the clubcard prices or not, you don't need to carry a physical card anymore. Mine are even on my watch.

On Mumsnet, people are very quick to tell everyone how they can comply with whatever new horrible thing a company or government is doing.

I prefer to say "no" to things like this that I don't like and can avoid. Also, the last time I went to Sainsburys for a few things, there was 1 till on with a huge queue. They expected everyone to self serve. No, I don't need you to tell me how to use one. I'll just shop elsewhere - like I mainly do already.

Ella6 · 11/04/2023 15:47

I'm saying that you're quoting this oft-repeated hoary old story about "how powerful data-led marketing is" to make out that data-led marketing is an invasion of privacy.

Umm, no I didn’t @LordEmsworth. I shared an interesting article. Maybe go back and re-read?

I'm similar to you, we mostly shop in Aldi, but occasionally go to any supermarket and have loyalty cards for most of them, including the much maligned M&S Sparks card, which I've had quite a lot of freebies from as it happens. Quite a lot of fruit and bread, plus candles and other nick nacks.

So the amount of points we get from any is minimal, I do currently have over £50 of Nectar points, but most of those are due to eBay and fuel, almost none on groceries from Sainsburys. I'm just waiting for them to bring back the November double up promotion so I can get all my Christmas fizz using it. If they don't do that, I'll finally give in and buy normal groceries with them, but it's a case of who blinks first between me and them right now.

But I expect that they're not after people like us, who only ever shop in Tesco a few times a year to stock up on things that are on offer and bits that aren't ludicrously expensive compared with Aldi. They want families to do their big shop there each week and will use all sorts of smoke and mirrors to try and convince them that they're the cheapest/the best quality/the widest range etc.

fairgame84 · 11/04/2023 15:15

I wouldn't be that fussed if they weren't so shady about the prices.
Pampers for DD were £8.50 per pack. Then increased to £10 but £6 for clubcard. The cynic in me thinks the £8.50 to £10 increase was to offset the reduction for club card so tesco doesn't lose out in revenue.

Agreed, lots of the price increases followed weeks later by a discount is very shady indeed. Especially since the cost of the products is rising anyway or so we are told, it is hard to keep track now and I am certain there is blatant profiteering going on taking advantage of the situation. I've seen things like coffee bounce around so much in price that the now discounted price is the full price of the product 18months ago. I can't keep up and if they are tracking my data I hope they notice that if something I usually buy is artificially priced outrageously high in advance of a discount I will not be buying it.

StormTreader · 11/04/2023 16:09

For people saying "put it in the app on your phone", Tesco twice now have updated their app so that when I tried to open it in the store it wouldnt open because they'd decided to "retire" it and use a new app instead.

I just have the club card in my phone wallet

Ktime · 11/04/2023 16:47

We Clubcard holders give Tesco loads of data about our data shopping habits, which is worth millions.

Why on earth should non Clubcard holders benefit from the low prices?

I don't get the big deal, I have the Clubcard fob card saved on my keychain and in my iPhone wallet.

I also have the Asda and Morrisons apps on my phone. I don't have a Nectar card but I'll just add it to my apps on my phone.

Nothing is free in this world.

So just download the new app? It took 1 minute.

RiktheButler · 11/04/2023 16:55

You know that supermarkets have always used "tricks" to get you spending, even to where they physically place things on shelves? I'm happy for them to track my shopping and target my discounts and vouchers because it saves me money, it really does.

Did you miss the bit where I mentioned not agreeing with the scheme?

I happen to not give a shit if they have my data. You do, that's great. I'm only concerned about how much my shopping costs, I don't have the mental capacity to worry about everyone else at the moment.

Rockbird · 11/04/2023 17:24

*other people not agreeing with it

CrapBucket · 11/04/2023 17:25

It drives me spare too. Especially when splitting with ex and it’s another 12 bastard things to remember to change over to new email etc etc.

Just tell me your best price or fuck off.

Southeastdweller · 11/04/2023 19:08

TeenLifeMum · 11/04/2023 12:36

Those saying you don’t pay extra - at Tesco using the club card is normal price (compared to Asda my local store) and non club card is a higher charge. The “discount” is just not an over inflated charge non card holders pay.

No, I don't think so.

Just checked and to take a few examples:

Heinz baked beans 415g - 95p at Sainsbury's with a Nectar card / £1.40 at Asda.

Napolina Chopped Tomatoes 4x400g - £2.25 Sainsbury's Nectar price / £3.00 at Asda

Kellogg's Frosties 470g- £2.50 Sainsbury's Nectar price / £3.30 at Asda

I don't give a shit about my data - I just want to save money on my food bill, so thanks to the OP for this thread as I didn't know about this thing they've started and so I'll be going to Sainsbury's more from now on.

OddBoots · 11/04/2023 19:32

I can see all this data is valuable for companies, as most of my supermarket shopping is online via Morrisons and Ocado I guess I am giving them that data for no discount, more fool me.

I occasionally visit a Sainsbos so I'm undecided if I will get a Nectar.

I've read it, and other versions of it. Many times before. Mostly after I found out that it's not actually a true story. It is an interesting story, that was why I reacted to it. I did assume you'd shared it in order to express the moral of this fable, be careful with your data!

And actually I agree, "be careful with your data" is a good message. It's an excellent message in fact, and everyone should be aware of how their data might be used. Just, it would be nice if we didn't have to pretend that a father "angrily confronted" a Target store manager because of the accuracy of Target's amazing marketing, in order to take that message seriously...

I hate it too as it means they can only offer me the cheaper price so long as I consent to them having data around my shopping habits.

It's a trade off. Completely fair

PurplePlayhouse · 11/04/2023 19:49

Tesco stopped getting my custom because of this over inflation of prices. I guess I'll be doing the same for Sainsbury's too!

Pixie2015 · 11/04/2023 19:52

I hate shopping at Tesco because of the club card prices and that’s why tend to use sainsburys- think will be Lidl and Aldi from now!
