Dalai llama ask a child to suck his tongue

Has anyone seen the new video of the Dalai Llama asking a child to suck his tongue. Yes. It sounds bizarre. But it is in the news right now. The video is out there. And the dalai llama is apologising on social media now

Im devastated! I went to see the Dalai Llama in India. He gave a speech on accepting and loving everyone, and that it didn't matter what religion we are. I always told people that it was one of the highlights of my life.

I went through life thinking he was a good person, that he was one of the good ones. To see this today, makes me think oh no is he yet another abuser.

Some people have remarked about this video that sticking your tongue out at someone is a greeting in Tibet.

However - the Dalai Llama kisses the child on the lips in the video, and asks the child to suck his tongue. It does not look right at all.

He has apologised on twitter now.

What do you all think?

@BurrosTail i’m interested to know what culture you’re from that you think a dad holding his daughter’s hand is sexual? I’m south Asian and have seen grown men hold hands in mine and other countries (in public) in a non sexual way and also kiss on the cheek. Being from an eastern culture I’m interested to know which culture does the tongue sucking thing.

Even so, that something is cultural doesn't make it non-abusive, especially to the young and vulnerable who're always on the receiving end of these "cultural norms". We know better, we do better. Cultures can and do change/evolve.

This exactly. Men doing what the fuck they want is cultural norm in many places, doesn’t make it okay!

@magma32 I think its a jewish thing? someone correct me if I'm wrong

I myself got total pedo vibes from English dads holding hands with their daughters

Course you did.

MagicMatilda · 10/04/2023 16:45

Absolutely sickened by this. There is no excuse…ever.

It may have been misguided but without intent.

A 9th century Tibetan king, Lang Darma, known for his cruelty, had a black tongue. As Buddhists, Tibetans believe in reincarnation, and they feared that this mean king would be reincarnated. Consequently, for centuries Tibetans have greeted one another by sticking out their tongues demonstrating that they do not have black tongues, that they are not guilty of evil deeds, that they are not incarnations of the malevolent king.
Nowadays, when Tibetans meet, they briefly extend their tongues as a greeting. They do not extend their tongues as far out or for so long a time as shown in the film. They would never extend their tongues as a group, either. In addition to being a greeting, sticking out one’s tongue is used to show agreement, and over the past few years this gesture has evolved into a sign of respect.

We need to stop believing in men as gurus. They are not. They are people who like power and wealth and status and more often than not they seem to be sexual abusers. He is a cult like religious leader. Hiding in plain sight. Hardly unusual.

Limetart · 10/04/2023 16:46

Gandhi used to sleep with naked young women to test his power of abstinence.
Another creepy pedo imo.

Not this again. What has that got to do with a man staring at a young boy in the eyes and asking him to suck his tongue?

Bet it's not all he asks the kids to suck, why do people worship people like this? Like they are some sort of higher being, it just gives them a cloak to sexually abuse vulnerable people, usually children. If he's happy to do this in plain sight like this is normal, I think it tells you a lot about his behaviour behind closed doors. Hopefully there's a full investigation into his conduct.

He kisses the child on the lips for a long time, before he asks the child to suck his tongue.

You can see that the child does not want to kiss the Dalai llama on the lips, but the Dalai llama pushes him into it.

Should an old religious man be allowed to kiss a child on the lips?

That in itself is extremely wrong.

Agree. Very uncomfortable. I hope the young boy is ok.

foxlover47 · 10/04/2023 16:53

Whatever the reason it is a strong hell no from me
How could it ever be ok

Where do you get that idea that the Pope is the best person on the Catholic Church? That's just not true and isn't taught. In fact the church teaches everyone is equal under God.

I was just about to write something similar with regards to Islam. We're not allowed to idolise/ worship/ bow down to other human beings.

🙄

Sticking out your tongue... no one cares.

Asking a child to suck your tongue.... thats quite something else.

Given his age I agree it could possibly be dementia. Inappropriate sexual behaviour is a common symptom and Ive seen it myself many times as a former nurse.

It doesn't make it right though. He should step down immediately.

I agree and regardless of the reason behind the behavior the DL needs to retire.

@malapast behave.
Sticking your tongue out in greeting is VERY different to sticking your tongue out and asking a child to suck on it.

If you really don’t want to see the difference - because let’s be clear anyone defending him isn’t lacking understanding of what he did, just tying themselves in knots to excuse and minimise it - then maybe ask how you’d feel if that child was related to you and instead of the Dalai Lama it was an elderly grandparent or uncle or shopkeeper asking them to suck their tongue.

As a religious leader it is MORE incumbent on him to behave with respect and decency and morality not LESS.

theDudesmummy · 10/04/2023 17:10

This is a bit of a gift and an "I told you so" for my DH. He is not only an atheist but vehemently anti all religions, believing them to basically be the greatest evil in the human world. I have always said to him that I get his thinking regarding many organised religions/consequences of religions (abuse, sectarianism, prejudice, war, etc etc), but I often mooted Buddhism as somewhat of an exception (including the DL).

I am not really a proper Buddhist but have a lot of time for many of the teachings and concepts and was an admirer of the DL in particular. I shouldn't be surprised. I work in the field of child sexual abuse and know only too well how prevalent it is, even among the least likely suspects. But I am saddened by this.
