As title says

Feel sick, can't look at it properly yet!

What do now?

I lost a fingernail as a child from memory I had to bathe it in salt water morning and night until the wound healed. I guess you will have to dress it as well. Do you have a minor injuries unit you could go to?

W0tnow · 10/04/2023 06:31

Make your entire family look at it.

Tell everyone about it.

wait till it grows back.

that’s what I did. Hth

HarlanPepper · 10/04/2023 06:34

aaargh! that is all

Summerslimtime · 10/04/2023 06:35

Sudacrem and plaster. Repeat lots.

Sugarfree23 · 10/04/2023 06:35

I'd see a pharmacist's, antiseptic cream maybe? But it will take ages for the new nail to grow.

Fiftysoon · 10/04/2023 06:35

How did you do it? Post a picture never seen an entire toe nail ripped off before! Bet it was mega painful. I put a cut in mine once it grew back with it still for years just looked now and seems to have healed probably took 5 years though.

Vallmo47 · 10/04/2023 06:37

Sympathy, ripped half of mine off a while ago and it hurt. Now you put cream and a plaster on and wait… not a lot else you can do. Obviously keep an eye so you don’t get an infection. Mine is back now but it took a good 4-5 days before I could walk normally.

Unbakey · 10/04/2023 06:38

Walked into the hamster cage I forgot I moved to a temporary spot on the floor last night. Duh

Have you still got the nail?
My dd lost her entire fingernail, after an op the nail was placed where it should have been and bandaged up.
Appreciate bandaging a toe will be more tricky.

schnubbins · 10/04/2023 06:40

I did that a few years ago.I opened the sliding door on my wardrobe not realising that my big toe was too close and ripped the whole nail off .I bandaged it up and then put on flip-flops.The following day I was helping my son to change the sink unit in his flat he was carrying it up a few stairs when it stared slipping out of his hands and he dropped the sink unit on the same foot that was already injured .It all took months to heal and my big toe is still very sensitive and looks strange.

Fiftysoon · 10/04/2023 06:40

Honestly I think you should do a YouTube video it’s fascinating and you can do daily updates. Was it like you started to rip it off and Yalu just had to keep going with it? This is one of my worst nightmares I hate even stubbing my toes the pain is so immense!

Unbakey · 10/04/2023 06:55

@Fuctifin0 nail is still there, sort of popped it back and wrapped loo roll round to keep it together?
What was the op for??

OP posts:
Fiftysoon · 10/04/2023 07:01

Don’t use loo roll little bits will get underneath and get infected you need to get some proper gauze and melonin type dressing. In the meantime kitchen roll is better than loo roll less fluffy and risk of bits coming off.

Bumply · 10/04/2023 07:04

Ds2 dropped a dinner plate edge on onto his big toe and the nail was damaged and came completely away a few days later.
I don't remember the nail bed needing any treatment, just took absolutely forever for the new nail to grow back in.

JMSA · 10/04/2023 07:05

Owwwww, you poor thing!

Fiftysoon · 10/04/2023 07:06

Just read that the advice is not to reattach a nail if it has ripped off says toe nails will take 18 months to grow back.

titaniumhip · 10/04/2023 07:23

As an ex long distance runner I don't think I have an original toenail on my feet. Sometimes there's a new nail right there when they come off other times it takes an age for them to come back. I'd sometimes just put a dot of nail polish on the flesh no one seems to notice.

CherryHouse · 10/04/2023 07:46

I lost a thumb nail after catching it in my car door. Hurt like hell, but grew back. I think it took a few months and looked gross for a while. Now looks perfect.

nomoremerlot · 10/04/2023 07:48

Take a photo of it and post it on sporners corner.

Mine grew back quicker than that and it was in a much better state than the manky one that came off.

I managed to run over my big toe with a walking frame whilst at the hospital for an x-ray. The there was blood everywhere and the nail was hanging by a thread. A nurse removed it entirely and put a dressing on it for me.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 10/04/2023 08:03

I've lost plenty of toenails over the years and have never done anything about it?

Just chucked the mail in the bin and carried on as normal - or stuck a plaster on if it was bleeding - I certainly wouldn't be holding the nail in place with loo roll!

Unbakey · 10/04/2023 08:09

@coffeecupsandwaxmelts
Fair enough 😁
I've never done this before, so new territory!
So much blood and just panicked, normally not squeamish at all but this caught me off guard

Wavingnotdowning · 10/04/2023 08:30

I did the same - so painful. I went straight to my chiropodist. who dressed it, and kept an eye on it regularly, trimming it as it grew back. If this isn't done it can apparently cause a lot of problems. Four years later it has completely recovered. Good luck - it's such a nasty injury xxxx

bringonyourwreckingball · 10/04/2023 08:34

I’ve just lost all of mine (chemotherapy) - I’m just trying to keep them as clean as possible to avoid infection

Alittlenonsensenowandthen · 10/04/2023 08:35

I've done this twice on my big toe. Its totally gross! However they do grow back. If it's still partially attached then put a plaster around it. Tj new nail will grow underneath. It does take ages though.
