to point out that one Y chromosome does not make you a male

Nimbostratus100 · 06/04/2023 09:53

In response to other posts insisting that one genetic test and one Y chromosome makes an athlete indisputably male with no room for error, I just want to point out that it not true.

There is always genetic exchange, for example, between a mother and baby, so anyone who has had a son will still have Y chromosomes in some cells in their body, and that will possibly show up in a genetic screening.

I am all for keeping men out of women's sport, and defining them genetically, but please lets not go over the top - one test does not prove you are male

No. You'll have to take my word for it. I can't say how I know - it's potentially outing information.

perhaps sports could use they same test? A random person on the internet said they were a women and we would have to take their word for it….

Oh give it a rest. I've been polite but if you are determined to accuse the OP of not being a genuine poster I can't stop you.

PriOn1 · 06/04/2023 13:54

It's not having a Y chromosome that gives an advantage, its the levels of testosterone you're exposed to, particularly through puberty.

Given the previously linked thread about CAIS, this is unlikely to be entirely the case.

LeilaRose777 · 06/04/2023 13:56

It being the case that microchimerism exists and is testable - no human can change sex and no human is male/female. How many women have been banned from women's sports because of microchimerism?

TheShellBeach · 06/04/2023 13:57

Aw stop arguing. I'm enjoying this thread.

It's great you can clarify she's female. (Although I thought she was anyway)

Any chance you can clarify if she's a maths teacher or geneticist? Because even she doesn't seem to be sure of that one Wink

Well they are clearly not a geneticist

Ummm, if you've carried and birthed a baby boy...I would say that has cleared up any question of "are you male or female?" anyway...surely? I am not a geneticist though.

Think that clears everything up. 😁

I can't - sorry.

I am a geneticist, and that is exactly how it works

You're a teacher. Not a "geneticist".

Boomboom22 · 06/04/2023 14:11

Maybe she's a maths teacher who did a biology module at uni or even the genetics degree then taught maths. Either way she's so captured it's pointless arguing with her. Maybe when some if her students detransition she'll peak.

The mere fact that the person being tested has had a child will be enough to prove they are female.

ForTheLoveOfSleep · 06/04/2023 14:12

Nimbostratus100 · 06/04/2023 10:59

sure, but it is not always possible to prove, is it, and people do lie.

Are you going to say any athlete can enter the woman's game, if they claim to have given birth in the past?

Look at the logistics of it! All anyone would have to do is make that claim, free pass to woman's sport!

I simple pelvic x-ray (which can also determine biologial sex with 95-98% accuracy before pregnancy/birth) or ultrasound can show definitive evidence of pregnancy and/or birth.

BeachBlondey · 06/04/2023 13:38

Since when did humans, lose the ability, to identify whether someone is male or female, simply by using their eyeballs?

To be fair the issue is really around athletes with DSDs who appear female from external genitalia but in fact have XY chromosomes and male puberty advantages.

Was just about to post that I have seen Nimbostratus claim to be a teacher on other threads.

So which is it?

Bonkers reason to start a thread, BTW.

Nimbostratus100 · 06/04/2023 11:27

so, mocking the fact that I am severely dyslexic, and typing one handed in bed after major surgery makes you feel good, does it? And why are you doing that exactly? Because I am pointing out that aggression and hostility is being directed at people who have done absolutly nothing wrong, and you respond to that with mockery.......

I dont care, I dont know why you think I would

I would not like to be that sort of person myself, though

The drip feed is strong in this one!

Brokendaughter · 06/04/2023 14:22

OP, are you seriously scolding women & telling them to 'be kind'?

If you want to see what aggression & hostility look like, I suggest you turn around & look at the TRAs, because that is where you will see the dictionary definition of both words.

Merrymouse · 06/04/2023 14:24

Foodie6 · 06/04/2023 12:23

Thank you OP for educating me on microchimerism because I for one had no idea that was a thing (I'm sure a lot of people here had no clue either).

No idea why everyone is mocking you. Well I do this is Mumsnet afterall. If an elite female athlete went through genetic testing and Daily Fail released a vague article saying they need to go for further testing with no other details, this forum would be the first place that a thread would appear insisting they need to be ousted from the sport immediately.

Cases become controversial when it is clear that an athlete’s results are significantly outside the normal range, not because their tests are made public.

Didn’t study genetics, and I question a claim to have studied maths when they struggle to understand that it is possible to distinguish someone who, when tested, was found have 99.999% of cells containing XY karyotype, versus 0.001% of cells containing that karyotype.

If she had studied genetics (or read the next page in her book) then I am sure we would have heard about SRY translocation by now,

Tbf it could be neither

What 'external genitalia' do they have while being male and having XY chromosomes?

Nimbostratus100 · 06/04/2023 10:40

Yes of course, why are you saying "crack on" like that?

this is exactly what I mean by aggression.

Pointless, and unconstructive, and does nothing for womens cause at all, if the default response to anything and everything is aggression

There was nothing aggressive in that post?
