About the Mumsnet 'Massive Salad?'

I just thought over the weekend about some of the food threads on here recently and wondered if it would be a good idea to develop the idea of a 'Mumsnet Massive Salad' to be sold in major supermarkets? It would be prepackaged, have a variety of raw veg but .... and I absolutely stress this - absolutely no dressing whatsoever - far too calorific!! So a completely 'clean' salad! Also it should be in biodegradable packaging so ... no plastics ! There must be a market for it and a lot of people would want to try it out of intrigue. Would have to be 'massive' though !

Only flaw in this plan is that the kind of person who buys a Massive Salad wouldn't be caught dead in a supermarket and would buy the ingredients from a wholefood shop and make it themself.

Does anyone else watch ‘Minnesota salads that aren’t really salads’ videos on TikTok?

I’ve started imagining MNers sitting down to a massive bowl of those.

Yes marshmallow and jello "salad" 😃

Pioneer woman on food channel used to make cheese and bacon salads !

GalileoHumpkins · 04/04/2023 15:59

Surely MNers don't buy a massive salad, they grow it themselves, organically fertilised and watered with the tears of unicorns.

GrinGrin so true !

You’d need two sorts, one labeled for Aldi/Lidl and one for Waitrose/Ocado as otherwise it will be too cheap and nasty/too middle class & overpriced.
They can be identical but with a £5 price difference.

Good call

Surely supermarket shelves won't be big enough for something so massive?

SquidwardBound · 04/04/2023 16:16

This is clearly the direction the MN massive salad should be headed in. 😁

Fair point - maybe the marketing could go in this direction

I'm more of a massive biscuit person right now.....

Emigratingimmigrant · 04/04/2023 16:18

What's the grammage for massive MN salad? I was always curious

randomsabreuse · 04/04/2023 16:19

My old local pub had massive salads... There were usually 16 or 17 different items of "salad" plus the protein (crab was a special favourite). You got lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, grated carrots, plus various fruit, nuts and anything that could vaguely be deemed "salad". They were a challenge to finish and definitely had nice calorific dressings. I liked those massive salads!

Joking aside in summer i often buy one of the biggish Tesco salads in a thin plastic bowl (salad leaves, peppers, tomatoes, sweetcorn + optional dressing) and bung in a whole one of their pots of prawn cocktail.

It makes a massive salad ...
Not low calorie, but not intended to be. Delish.

Ooh, I want this now!

Mrsjayy · 04/04/2023 16:20

I'm having quiche with a moderate salad tonight, I feel such a failure 😕

GlassBunion · 04/04/2023 16:21

For some reason , I ve just been reminded of that 'pâté' thread where a whole family tucked in to small tub of pate with salad two nights running but the poster was worried about the leftover pate going off!

OMG now i'm craving a "Chopped" salad brand - they have them in Ireland and I think there's a couple of branches in the UK. It's a big salad bar and you choose what you want in it (or use one of their recommended combinations) and then they chop everything up together and add a dressing. It's also served in a cardboard takeaway box so I'm sure it will pass the MN eco police. oooh i miss those salads! MENU - Freshly Chopped

I really need to go there!

randomsabreuse · 04/04/2023 16:25

This is a "massive salad". Not my photo but Railway Inn North Tawton on trip advisor...

I don't actually think I ever finished one... despite how yummy they were!

Never really been into
Massive salads, but I am now. This is hilarious, and inspirational!!!

emmathedilemma · 04/04/2023 16:29

@Snugglemonkey its so good! Not cheap but I was on work expenses when I used to get them and it was a refreshing change from the “chips with everything” menu in the hotel!

LunaNorth · 04/04/2023 16:33

We used to have one every Saturday night when I was a kid, while watching the Brookside omnibus. My DSis and I still call a big salad a Brookside Salad.

Lettuce
tomato
cucumber
homemade coleslaw
new potatoes/oven chips
cold baked beans
boiled egg
beetroot
cheese
ham
crabsticks
bread and marge

It was probably about 2000 calories a portion

I've been there and remember the salads, gorgeous! Weirdly enough as soon as you mentioned that I wondered if it was the Railway.

PP what on earth did your boss get for £17 salad??

That Kardashian impersonator woman is very funny.

Humanwoman · 04/04/2023 16:35

The word salad has lost all meaning

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 04/04/2023 16:39

I'm fascinated by all those mad Mormon salads with bits of carrot suspended in lime jello. If that's religion you can keep it, babes!
