About the Mumsnet 'Massive Salad?'

I just thought over the weekend about some of the food threads on here recently and wondered if it would be a good idea to develop the idea of a 'Mumsnet Massive Salad' to be sold in major supermarkets? It would be prepackaged, have a variety of raw veg but .... and I absolutely stress this - absolutely no dressing whatsoever - far too calorific!! So a completely 'clean' salad! Also it should be in biodegradable packaging so ... no plastics ! There must be a market for it and a lot of people would want to try it out of intrigue. Would have to be 'massive' though !

It could be marketed with a ready cooked, 20lb, 6 legged chicken - the one that everyone seems to buy to feed their huge family for a week.

I've a large family but still looking for that elusive 6 legged bloody chicken though 🤣

Joking aside in summer i often buy one of the biggish Tesco salads in a thin plastic bowl (salad leaves, peppers, tomatoes, sweetcorn + optional dressing) and bung in a whole one of their pots of prawn cocktail.

It makes a massive salad ...
Not low calorie, but not intended to be. Delish.

This sounds lovely and I feel I now have to try it.

I hate salad 😬

I've never seen a thread about Massive Salads except the ones taking the piss out of them. Can someone link to the salad enthusiasts please?

Here's a nice chopped salad btw. https://www.davidlebovitz.com/israeli-salad-recipe/

You must make sure the packaging contains the slogan “food of the gods” t

I don't know the difference?

The Americans are big into chopped salads. They're basically as the name says, all the ingredients chopped up pretty small so you can get a taste of everything in each bite. And not just boring run of the mill ingredients. Whereas a UK salad is often just a boring affair featuring some leaves, a few cherry tomatoes halved, some cucumber bits and some sliced peppers.

Mrsjayy · 04/04/2023 15:53

Ah I see thanks for sharing. Yes I get the difference now.

1930toEdinburgh · 04/04/2023 15:53

Someone needs to define the actual size of a massive salad.

Mrsjayy · 04/04/2023 15:29

With a tonne of butter!

Would that be ‘real butter’?

Always important to say if it’s real as some poor sods think that their ‘spreadable’ is butter!

ReneBumsWombats · 04/04/2023 15:56

There could also be a half sized one for the competitive undereaters. Each time one is bought, someone slaps the chef in the factory for worsening the obesity crisis.

GalileoHumpkins · 04/04/2023 15:59

Surely MNers don't buy a massive salad, they grow it themselves, organically fertilised and watered with the tears of unicorns.

AlltheFs · 04/04/2023 15:59

You’d need two sorts, one labeled for Aldi/Lidl and one for Waitrose/Ocado as otherwise it will be too cheap and nasty/too middle class & overpriced.
They can be identical but with a £5 price difference.

emmathedilemma · 04/04/2023 16:00

OMG now i'm craving a "Chopped" salad brand - they have them in Ireland and I think there's a couple of branches in the UK. It's a big salad bar and you choose what you want in it (or use one of their recommended combinations) and then they chop everything up together and add a dressing. It's also served in a cardboard takeaway box so I'm sure it will pass the MN eco police. oooh i miss those salads! MENU - Freshly Chopped

CatchYouOnTheFlippetyFlop · 04/04/2023 16:02

I made a salad for lunch today. Not enough to leave to make another one for tomorrow, so I just had it all. It was MASSIVE

I did think of MN whilst eating my massive salad 😄

Sea Salt Crystals not any old salt!

Supercarshopper · 04/04/2023 16:04

M&S sell the massive bowl salads. You die of boredom before finishing one though.

Not sure if they sell Lurpak though 🤢

Whichwhatnow · 04/04/2023 16:05

I thought the point of the massive salad is that it's massively calorific, and essentially a full on meal but somehow 'healthy' due to being cold and containing some green stuff? So loads of mayo, avocado, feta, maybe some grilled meat, croutons. But redeemed by the presence of lettuce.

You must have seen the ‘what’s in your salad this week?’ type threads. Or any thread about what’s for dinner, meal planning or meal ideas will also feature many people having massive salads.

They also feature any time there’s a ‘is this a portion/enough/too much food’ type of thread. Loads of people will insist that a single chickpea and a sliver of cheese would be sufficient for them with a massive salad alongside it.

Seasonofthewitch83 · 04/04/2023 16:10

I buy my boss salads for lunch every day that cost £15-£19 and it makes me wince. Its a fucking salad!

SquidwardBound · 04/04/2023 16:10

Does anyone else watch ‘Minnesota salads that aren’t really salads’ videos on TikTok?

I’ve started imagining MNers sitting down to a massive bowl of those.
