To be annoyed about Wet Wipes ban

I have never put them down the toilet, but because too many stupid people do, I will no longer be able to clean my bum hole properly!
And don't have a large bathroom so there's no space for a bidet, before anyone suggests it.

YABU because it clearly says in the article that only ones with plastic will be banned.
Buy wipes which don't contain plastic and actually break down. Boots and Tesco have already banned the ones containing plastic.

This. No excuse.

nopuppiesallowed · 04/04/2023 13:38

Boogismyname · 04/04/2023 13:10

Boots own brand baby wipes are biodegradable and are plastic free.

Is the packaging recyclable?

Crumpetdisappointment · 04/04/2023 13:39

the wet wipe that people use the clean the loo/bathroom are so wasteful
but the shocking market of making wet wipes to clean the actual floor!
just wrong

If you got shit on your arm, would you just dry wipe it away?
Seriously?
Who want dry bits of shit festering on their skin? So close to their vagina? Gross.

I like a flushable wipe, but had never heard of the wype gel until this thread, so will look into that

Instead you'd prefer all the chemicals from the wetwipes 'festering' around your vagina. You're wiping wrong anyway though if anything is going near your vagina.

I wish they'd ban them outright. I always used cloths and warm water when ds was a baby so much better than all those chemicals in wipes. Now we just use toilet roll, if you wipe correctly ie bum hole upwards then there's no problem.

Toilet paper disintegrates when you get it wet.

This is a joke right...do you have persistent runny Pooh's

What on earth have I read here 😂

Reusable wipes are so much easier than disposable wet wipes. The latter just smear poo around and you need 45 to clean up properly. One bamboo wipe is usually sufficient to completely clean a bum and do it swiftly. Just take wipes out dry, wet in the sink or with a bottle of water if out and about and then pop in a wet bag when dirty, go home and lob the bag straight into the wash.

Omg are people really carrying poop covered wipes around all day must be awful in heat. No wonder so many stink.

Angelil · 04/04/2023 13:51

YABU. Reusable wipes work perfectly well, seriously. We have never used anything else on our two children (aged 4y and 5w) apart from the free wet wipes we were given when they were born. Wet wipes literally just push the sh*t around as opposed to the reusable wipes absorbing the mess. @PurBal for out and about you just need a wet bag, a box of wipes and a spray bottle so you can spray the wipes as you use them…it’s not difficult.

What’s the issue with just wiping your bum with toilet paper, especially if you have a daily shower. Doesn’t most poo just slip out, with very little/no residue ??

For women with chronic UTIs, it's a massive help. I haven't had one since I started wiping/washing afterwards which is unheard of

And also for people who are using adult pads, you can't just wipe it with toilet paper especially if they're a wheelchair user or in bed most of the day. Stuff gets squashed/dried on

Ponderingwindow · 04/04/2023 13:57

Toilet top bidet. Your bum will thank you.

YorkshirePuddingsGreatestFan · 04/04/2023 13:59

I'm pleased to hear it.

I'm in the last house before the sewer pipe turns on a right angle bend. Several times the sewage has backed up, come up the manhole cover in my garden and flooded it with raw sewage.

This is mainly cause by people flushing wipes, sanitary pads and other unflushable things down the toilet, which get caught up at the bend and block it.

Hercisback · 04/04/2023 14:01

OP who gets close enough to your arse on a regular basis to warrant the level of cleaning you're doing?

Angelil · 04/04/2023 14:06

Albiboba · 04/04/2023 11:11

@Broadbeachshallow Water and cloth are viable options, certainly at home.

Hmm have you ever tried to change at least 2 nappies out of the house with just a cloth and water??

Yes. I did so regularly with my first son and also do now that my second (5w old baby) is here. It’s really no biggie 🤷‍♀️

Angelil · 04/04/2023 14:07

emmsyg · 04/04/2023 11:16

We've been using reusable nappies and wipes for 2 years now and they're honestly brilliant. We installed one of the little attachment spray hoses to the toilet (easy to do yourself) and I use it to spray down any dirty nappies and wipes before going in the washing machine.

I can see why cloth nappies aren't for everyone, but honestly, the wipes are so much better than disposables for the job. I've used cheeky wipes, bear bott, nipper nappies, they're all great. You use far less wipes per clean than with disposables. We have a cheeky wipes box, and every 3 days or so I put a half of a poppets cloth wipe solution (you don't need this but seems to stop them going musty if you're storing them wet), mix it in water, soak all the wipes then wring them out and leave them damp in the box until they're used. I genuinely haven't bought a disposable wet wipe in 2 years - I just take a handful from the box in a wet bag if I'm going out.

I used disposable nappies and wipes for my first, so I've tried both and I hope this doesn't sound preachy, I just think its a genuinely very easy eco swap to make to using the wipes. You don't even need to buy specific wipes - a cut up cotton towel and a tupperware will do the same job.

It genuinely is! Disposable wipes just smear the sh*t around, I find.

Dirtydiesel · 04/04/2023 14:08

"And also for people who are using adult pads, you can't just wipe it with toilet paper especially if they're a wheelchair user or in bed most of the day. Stuff gets squashed/dried on"

Yes it's difficult to clean off even when changed straightaway which often you can't do anyway.

KimberleyClark · 04/04/2023 13:30

Can’t you see that is different? Your arm is your arm. You do things with it, hug people etc. Your bum is your bum. You cover it and you sit on it. That’s it.

It’s only different if you don’t mind walking around with faeces on your body. Depends on your hygiene standards.

Hercisback · 04/04/2023 14:01

Oh so you only clean for other people. Not for, you know, basic hygiene.

woodhill · 04/04/2023 14:12

My dd used the washable wipes with dgd. You have a box to put them in and it seals.

Not a massive deal

Yarboosucks · 04/04/2023 14:12

We have recently installed a Japanese loo. Lovely, clean, dry and warm bottoms all round!

I honestly don’t think it is an easy swap for many people. Maybe you’re largely at home more since you’re doing it with your second.
When my baby was 0-1 I was regularly flying to stay with family, and regularly going back and forth on a 6 hour journey to meet DH at inlaws where he was caring for a family member. I honestly can’t imagine anything worse than trying to clean with a Tupperware full of water and a piece of cloth while out of the house for 12 hours and then not staying at home after that.

I’m not at home more with my second, and still use reusable wipes with both children. I went back to work when my first was 6m old and will do the same for my second.
We also fly/travel a fair amount as both sets of grandparents live abroad and it’s honestly not difficult to travel with the reusable wipes. Box of wipes. One spray bottle. One wet bag. Spray the wipe when you need to use it. When done, put it in the wet bag. Wash the contents of the wet bag when it’s convenient. It’s really not that difficult 🤷‍♀️
not sure where you have got the idea of a ‘Tupperware full of water’ from…that’s just not part of the equation.

@MrsMiddleMother why not?

Scoobyblue · 04/04/2023 14:14

Wipes are an environmental disaster. I hope that they are banned except in a medical setting if necessity demands their use.

Dirtydiesel · 04/04/2023 14:16

Most people with disabilities don't live in a medical setting.

Underthesurface4 · 04/04/2023 14:17

L3ThirtySeven · 04/04/2023 11:08

No. You can’t flush any wet wipes not even plastic free ones. The plastic free ones use plant fibres and so are fully natural and biodegradable and so do not harm the environment like the conventional ones that do contain plastic.

You can flush the ones that have met the water industry standard ‘Fine to Flush.’ They disintegrate upon contact with water, just like paper. 👍🏽

illiterato · 04/04/2023 14:17

I actually don’t know why bum guns haven’t caught on. They are mainstream in the ME/ Asia, take up no room and easy to plumb in. But you never see them here. The only thing I can think of is throat it’s because our cold water is too cold whereas in warm countries it’s room temp.
