Still fuming

Took 11 year old DD to a local park today with DSis and DN (3). Drunk teenagers everywhere. Literally about 30-40 of them. Because they were gathering in a certain area, poor DN couldn't get near it or understand why. One, about 14, with her bum literally hanging out of her shorts decided to stop by me and DD and shout "SUCK MY DICK EMO!" at us. DD visibly shocked and I couldn’t say a fucking word for fear of us both being jumped by the rest of them. It actually sickens me that kids around here (nearby Liverpool) get away with murder. Sometimes actual attempted, they wont blink before they'll go for a grown man with a knife. You cant say a thing because they're all Billy big bollocks in gangs, the lads wearing balaclavas. Police wont do a thing.
AIBU in thinking this is no way to live?!

Honestly, I would have turned back as soon as I saw the drunk teenagers.

I do think it’s awful. When we were kids there were things for kids to do, youth clubs, sports centers and the such like. The government shut everything down. There was a huge project in Iceland to get kids off the streets and it was very successful but I can’t see the UK government doing anything like that. They’ll probably just issue fines to parents.

GayforMoleman · 04/04/2023 02:03

We tried but poor DN was desperate to get to her favourite place in the park :(

There are other parks. There is no way i would have gone in. Id also have called 111 and reported it

GayforMoleman · 04/04/2023 02:21

We didn’t spot them until we were In. Next closest park is a well known no go.
The police won't even come out for assaults.

Why on earth won't the police come out to deal with this sort of thing? If they let kids behave how they want it just leads to even more problems.

Kay286 · 04/04/2023 05:01

@Mumma 30/40 drunk teenagers but you didn’t spot them until in there ?

Because after 13 years of funding cuts from the Tories, they have too few people to deal with too many issues.

The teenagers were behaving badly, anti-socially but no one was actually being hurt, so it would not be top response.

I still find it astounding the Tories defunded the police so comprehensively! But here we are.

SpookyBlackCat · 04/04/2023 05:54

Not the point of the thread but does anyone else wonder what the Tories DID actually spend money on, not on roads or healthcare or rubbish collection or schools or police or fire services or mental health care or social services. I can’t think of a single thing we can point to and be proud of these days.

Riapia · 04/04/2023 06:00

Of course it’s the tories fault.
Teens would much rather be playing table tennis than drinking and smoking in a park, much more fun.

Ursualesther · 04/04/2023 06:04

OP, you see a large group of drunk teens in a playground and yet you still took your toddler in.

of course they were being inconsiderate and utterly twattish

but come on…. You adapt to the situation and you don’t bloody go to the playground. And if your 3 year old has a tizz, you say that those nasty kids wouldn’t allow him on the areas he liked so you’re going to take him to another park and / or he can pick up a treat on the walk back

But with a large intimidating group you'd be completely justified in calling 999.

If you look at the Iceland Youth Project, then yes actually kids would rather be doing something productive with their time like table tennis, dance, skateboarding, football, art, music or whatever. No one aspires to sitting around a park getting drunk, taking drugs and whatever else.

Vallmo47 · 04/04/2023 06:09

OP is not the problem and should be entitled to safely go where she wishes. Full stop.

It’s becoming similar here in Bristol OP and it’s sickening. My kids are that age and thankfully nothing like that but I don’t want them scared to step foot outside. Awful.

Minimochi · 04/04/2023 06:12

I would suggest you move. Sounds horrible.
We've had police at the door because one of our branches was overhanging the little path along the bottom of our garden...
I live in a small town.

I live in a large town in south east and have two children and what the op describes is unrecognisable to me

This is where the tories spend our money, they give it to their mates. They don't even hide it well anymore.

I also live not far from Liverpool in a sought-after ‘naice’ area, but I won’t take my kids to our local park during the weekend/school holiday afternoons. It’s just full of gangs of teenagers acting like jobs. Locals do call the police and community officers sometimes come, but all they do is move them on. Nothing changes. Liverpool has such a gang culture and it’s getting worse. 😭

Tallulasdancingshoes · 04/04/2023 18:17

And I agree, you should be allowed to go to the park without all the anti-social behaviour. I’d be fuming too.

GayforMoleman · 04/04/2023 23:59

@Ursualesther If you'd have read properly you'd have seen it wasn’t my 3 year old. My niece. The teenagers poured into the section of the park she likes the most as we were walking towards and standing in front of it. DSIS had to wrangle DN as me and DD stood in front of where the teenagers were massing, waiting. That's when what I described happened. DN was physically picked up and removed from the area.
We would never have gone there at the weekend because we're well aware of exactly what happens in that park. This was a Monday afternoon.
What angers me the most is the inability to stand up for both childrens right to be in the park, and even the abuse spewed at us for fear of us being jumped by a large group.
As I said, the police are no use whatsoever. You'd be lucky if they came out two days AFTER an assault.

It used to happen rarely now, in certain area, it has become the norm. Lucky are the posters that don't know this from their own experience.

But, as we live in an age when children are no longer disciplined by parents or home and when police prefer to chase down name calling and dance in the street at festivals rather than actual, you know, dealing with intimidating and criminal activities than what can we expect.

No doubt, someone will come along beating their breast and urging us all to think of the background of these thugs and, how if only pots of money were thrown at them, they would all be marvellous.

Tis bollocks. A kick up the arse would do a lot more good than a ping pong table but who is going to administer it-any poor sap who tries will end up with shit through their letterbox, injured and probably in the dock.
We have reaped what we have sown.

This is not worthy of a 999 call. It was not an emergency.

You're right. I’m struggling with dealing with the reaping of what others have sown though, because what I've described is a snapshot of one afternoon. But these things occur day in day out around here. Living in a cesspool. Nothing I can do. I used to stand up for myself, but with DD in tow I can't take the risk of the comeback. It's a fucking joke.
