Please help me bear my delayed flight

Is there anything worse than a delayed flight. I'm flying from Dublin to Bristol.

After checking in, I walked the very, very long walkway in Dublin airport to get to my gate. It's a very long walkway to get there. I feel like walking from one end of my town to the other end is quicker than walking from one end of Dublin airport to the other end. When I arrived at my gate it said that the flight is delayed by 2 hours. And now someone has said that it might be delayed longer

I had to walk the very very long way back to the café area, (seriously Dublin airport is massive, ) to get back to a cafe to sit down and have a coffee.

I am coming over to the UK for a job interview and I had given myself time to have a look around the city, the day before my interview. Now I'll be rushed and have very little time to look around the city when I get there.

Surely it should be easier than this to get from Ireland to England. I just feel so annoyed. I hate flight delays. How do you deal with the annoyance when it happens

  1. Walking is good for you.
  1. Flights often get delayed. Always take a good book and allow even more time in your activity schedule to allow for delays!
Lockheart · 03/04/2023 14:24

Shit happens. Flying is a very quick mode of transport so even with a 2 hour delay it'll still be faster than sailing / driving / taking the train.

And if it's for safety checks, well I'd rather be two hours late than dead.

Buy yourself a book and settle down in the waiting area with a drink, it will go faster than you think.

MNbingo · 03/04/2023 14:25

Is it the Ryanair one as that’s saying Go to Gate after a 45 minute delay?

FlounderingFruitcake · 03/04/2023 14:25

You were smart to fly the day before the interview. Accept it’s out of your hands. Have they given you a meal voucher? If not ask. Enjoy the coffee and the quiet sit down. If you want to be productive maybe go over your notes for the interview! Good luck, hope you get away soon and get the job!

takealettermsjones · 03/04/2023 14:25

I get that it's a bit annoying but two hours is not a long delay!

Yes I know flights can get delayed. But I feel it's understandable for a long flight to maybe get delayed.

A flight takes 30 minutes to get from Ireland to the Uk. For a flight that takes 30 minutes to to be delayed by 2-3 hours, seems totally unreasonable to me! Everyone else here is pissed off aswell.

2 hours is barely a delay. You will be fine.

MadeForThis · 03/04/2023 14:26

Ryanair? They always have the cheapest gate. It's a good mile walk.

FrenchandSaunders · 03/04/2023 14:27

I’d settle down in spoons with a good book and a 🥂

IglesiasPiggl · 03/04/2023 14:28

I always take comfort from filling in the delay compensation form whilst waiting at the airport. Other than that, find a place to charge your phone, browse MN, buy a book and try not to think about how late you are. Lastly, if it looks like you'll be arriving too late for public transport, book a cab to pick you up. That takes care of the stress of being stranded.

Haha that's true. It's always a good long walk to get to the ryanair gates. They like to keep you walking.

I can see why you're pissed off.
It's a beautiful day in Bristol, sun shining, birds singing.

PacificallyRequested · 03/04/2023 14:28

FYI, if you get the job, moving countries is going to be way more stressful than a slightly delayed flight.

I know I can't wait to get there. I really wanted to get there during the day and have a look around bristol. It'll be getting dark when I get there now. Ah well. It has to be done

I've definitely said this once before. But I'm saying it again. I'm never flying with ryanair again!

The cheap flights are not worth it, if you don't depart on time! Though I know in a couple of months I'll forget and be tempted by the cheap flights again.

There was another aer Lingus flight going to Bristol this afternoon. I see it's departed on time.

No it won't. If the flight is delayed by two hours then you'll take off at 1630 and land at 1700. Sunset is at 1945 at the moment, so you'll still have almost three hours before dark to have a look round the centre and go for dinner before you go to your hotel.

My flight from Dublin to Luton was delayed by 4 hours last Thursday meaning I didn’t get home until 2 am in the morning - when I checked which gate it was going from I noticed the delay and therefore didn’t walk all around the airport - not sure how you didn’t notice this when first looking at the board!!!

DiscoBeat · 03/04/2023 14:36

We had an overnight flight from Canada when our children were 3 and 10 months old. We'd planned the flights so they could sleep on them but we got delayed by 8 hours! My husband booked a private room in an airport lounge which had chair/beds but they did all their sleeping beforehand and were awake for most of the flight. I didn't sleep at all so it took me a couple of days to get over it.

Wtfisthis1 · 03/04/2023 14:38

Get a grip. Two hours is hardly the end of the world. Honestly don’t know how you can complain about this!!

AndiOliversFan · 03/04/2023 14:40

If it’s delayed so that you’ll arrive more than 3 hours later than you were scheduled to, you may get EU 261 compensation. (I say “may” because the airline could legitimately refuse to pay on the grounds of “Extraordinary Circumstances” - depends on the reason for the delay.)

So you could come out of this in profit. Use the time to start filling in your claim form!

MandyMotherOfBrian · 03/04/2023 14:41

Mate, that is nothing. I was once delayed fourteen hours on a Cork to Stansted flight. I could have driven it quicker. By the time the flight actually went I’d bought every Clinique product they sold in the shop, eaten about three meals there and lost the will to live.

emmathedilemma · 03/04/2023 14:41

urgh no, delays on short haul flights are the worst! To be fair, Aer Lingus was no better when I flew to/from Dublin with them, I used to use the last flight of the day and hence they held it for any connecting passengers coming in from the US so as not to leave them stranded in Dublin overnight......meanwhile I could have been half way home rather than still sitting on a packed bus on the tarmac at Dublin airport waiting for some delayed Americans. oh, and they also bus you to/from the gate at both ends where Ryanair at least use a proper gate that's straight into the terminal, honestly that Aer Lingus bus does more miles round Dublin that the HOHO tour bus!

notimagain · 03/04/2023 14:42

@Mooshamoo

A flight takes 30 minutes to get from Ireland to the Uk. For a flight that takes 30 minutes to to be delayed by 2-3 hours, seems totally unreasonable to me!

Why is it unreasonable? Aviation doesn't run on rails 🤔and sometimes delays happen to the best (or worse) of airlines and the potential reasons are almost endless.

There's certainly nothing really to be gained in comparing how say airline A verses airline B did today, even on the same route. The delay to your flight could be the result of events that effected your crew/aircraft earlier in the day, whereas the other airline's aircraft and crew may have been somewhere completely different and not run into any earlier problems...

I do think it's a good idea to build in a decent margin, as you have....lots of people don't.

I've flown out of Dublin airport a couple of times and I do remember that long long walk. Isn't there signs that tell you that there is no catering at the end so if you want a coffee, get one before you start along the long long walk?

I also remember on one of my trips to Dublin that I wanted to go on Ryanair not Aer Lingus because the flight time was slightly better or some other reason I don't remember, but my employer said something like 'we don't use Ryanair' for unspecified reasons - I've used them many times and it's always been fine. And in my case, it was the Aer Lingus flight I was on that was delayed, making me late for the conference I was attending, and the Ryanair one went on time. I think that is both of us being caught in the law of sod.

It could be worse, you could be on the overnight ferry in rough seas.

Good luck with the job interview.

"Not sure how you didn't notice it when first looking at the board. "

Eh because they hadn't announced the delay at all, when I first looked at the board.

When I arrived at the airport, I checked the board , it said that the flight was leaving on time.

When I got through security, I checked the board again. It still said the flight was leaving at the correct time, and to proceed to the gate.

It was only after I walked to the gate, that they put up on the board that the flight was delayed.
