I like to think of myself as someone who's lived a bit and seen a fair few things but I was surprised yesterday.
I hadn't had cereal in ages so went to the large Tesco to buy Shreddies - but then I noticed the price difference. The Tesco own brand version - Malted Wheat - or something - was £3 cheaper! So, for what looks like the same volume if I'd have bought Shreddies I'd have paid around £4 but paid £1 instead for the Tesco own brand version! I expected the own brand version to be around 50p cheaper perhaps but it's a quarter of the price !!!!!

I think they taste fine actually but admittedly - I haven't had Shreddies in so long - I've forgotten what they taste like !!

I know but it's SO much cheaper, I'd have expected it to be 50p cheaper but not a quarter of the price !!

The Tesco ones go through my DP, so there's something different in them. I hate supporting Nestle, but he needs a quick breakfast and these were recommended for his diverticulitis and being pre diabetic.

Off brands are often made in the same place as branded. You might find a slight difference if you KNOW it's off brand, but if someone put the Tesco own brand in a Shreddies box, I doubt anyone would notice.

Marketing and visual signals.....

DS only likes the knock off ones, and refuses proper Shreddies 😄.

My husband and DS prefer the Tesco own brand shreddies as well and it doesn't affect their tummies so much.
I think most people would be surprised how much more you pay for advertising.

Yep branded cereal is ridiculous now. I only buy it occasionally, when its something you cant get unbranded, as a treat. I refuse to pay more than £2.50 for a box of cereal. Kids don't mind thankfully.

My preferred breakfast cereal is Weetabix (or the own brand equivalents) and there really isn't much difference. The only thing that annoys me is that Weetabix are wrapped in paper and the alternatives in plastic.

However I have never found an own brand that taste as good as Kelloggs cornflakes.

All branded cereals seem to be at least £3 box in Morrisons now whereas the own brand cereal are currently 2 for £1.80.

Really notice the different with beans and hoops too. Difference between Heinz and Tesco beans was silly really 50p for own brand and £1.40 for Heinz.

Have you tried Waitrose ones? I only eat them dry as I don't like cereal & milk.

I've bought the cheapy shreddies for years (because I'm a cheapskate). My mother sent us over a pack of the actual shreddies as I'm obviously abusing the teens with aldis finest. I was shocked at how sweet they were.

We do cheap on all of them. The only branded one I buy is Frosties and then only on a really good offer. Weetabix cheap brand is a massive difference for the 48s.

Lidl seem to have stopped doing their own brand Shreddies and I refuse to pay £3.85 for the originals!

We can't get own brand shreddies in the local mid size tesco or Morrisons, go without unless we go to a Big Shop. (don't do online grocery shopping) as we refuse to buy Nestle.
