That Absolutely Amazing Woman

MrsJackRackham · 02/04/2023 13:27

I've just read about the woman who gave evidence against the killer of Olivia Pratt-Korbel. What a fucking brave and phenomenal woman. She will have to go into witness protection and leave her whole life behind but she knew it was the right thing to do. And she gave the defence lawyer a mouthful as well by the sounds of it.
I could actually cry thinking about her.

OP posts:

I agree - glad that scum got what he got today.

Strawberrydelight78 · 03/04/2023 20:12

Wow I've just read an article about her. She really did give his barrister what for. I hope she has a long and happy life under a new identity. 😭😥

PennyForearm · 03/04/2023 20:15

By him turning up to her house uninvited, he gave her no choice and dragged her into his crime one way or another - help cover up for him and risk what goes with that, or be a witness against him and what goes along with that.

I feel incredibly sorry for her.

Her life will never be the same, nor will that of her family. Witness protection sounds absolutely awful.

HotSince82 · 03/04/2023 20:20

I feel the same OP.

I am from Liverpool and she has the city apart from the scum absolutely behind her.

We don't like people who grass on their neighbours, granted. We absolutely support those who testify against drug dealing murderous bellends.

Shame on his barrister. There is no amount of money in the world that would incite a person with a modicum of moral integrity to defend such heinous actions.

Absolutely commending that woman's courage this evening. Bravo if you are reading this 👏

Fucking stupid comment about the barrister. What do you think woul happen if criminals wern't represented?

daretodenim · 03/04/2023 21:13

Worth noting - from what I've heard - that the more thorough a defence barrister is, if the defendant is found guilty, the less chance they have of an appeal.

She's fabulous and I agree about everything said about her options and the cost to her.

HotSince82 · 03/04/2023 21:16

What are you on about?

Surely I can express my disdain at his counsel's moral fibre without you inferring that I proposed he should have no representation 🙄

It's in favour of their moral fibre that they do it - without proper, good quality representation, he could appeal and be released. Its how our justice system works and the barrister would have had little choice in representing him

That's pretty much what you said though.

How?

I called shame on his barrister.
And it is indeed a shame to provide a defence for such a person 's actions.

You really have no idea how the legal system works do you?

I have a rudimentary understanding.
Enough that I am certain that I would not voluntarily enter in to a situation which would incite me, voluntarily or otherwise to attempt to defend the actions of a man which had led directly to the murder of a child

But without defence lawyers doing their jobs well, criminals don't get a fair trial and therefore have more chance of getting out on appeal.

It may not be a job you'd want to do, but it's a job that has to be done. I don't want to be a binman, but we'd be be living in a shit hole if we started ostracizing everyone who did the job.

Borris · 03/04/2023 21:38

Everyone needs a barrister in this situation. They are just there to ensure a fair trial. Without a barrister he could claim an unfair trial and be out of prison. I'm sure the barrister is pleased with the outcome and can sleep at night.

RelentlessForwardProgress · 03/04/2023 21:39

Barristers work under the 'cab rank rule' @HotSince82
They are unable to turn down a client who has been referred to them

It’s called the cab rank rule. Barristers can’t turn down briefs just because they don’t like their client.

BlackBarbies · 03/04/2023 21:40

I’m just watching the Panorama now and she’s really done the right thing. It seems like her explanation of things really helped to nail Cashman as it seems that there wasn’t much evidence.

She’s so brave for stepping forward. Good luck to her in witness protection

user146539089 · 03/04/2023 21:40

@HotSince82 barristers don’t ‘give’ people a defence. They don’t have a choice who they represent. They usually don’t like their clients but have a job to do. Don’t think for one minute you are morally superior because you’re not.

HotSince82 · 03/04/2023 21:41

TheWildOnesRunningWithTheDogs · 03/04/2023 21:39

That's a false equivalence if ever there was one!

Bluetrews25 · 03/04/2023 21:42

Read 'To Kill A Mockingbird'
A cracking book, and it will explain why everyone deserves a defence.

Thank you to that very brave lady. She was in an awful position. Thank you for doing what you did.

This person responsible for Olivia ,s murder is deplorable but like it or not everybody is entitled to.a fair trial.and representation otherwise we wouldn't have a justice system.

No, it fucking isn't. Justice has to be seen to be done, which means everybody has to be defended to the best of a barrister's ability. So it's without doubt that they are guilty.

So you don't think anybody should be entitled to a defence ?
It works both ways sometimes as innocent people are arrested and charged with a crime ,it's the basis of our justice system that everybody is entitled to a fair trial.even those who.have commited henious, offences .

I can assure you that I am.

I have been interrogated by a barrister who was defending a rapist. A more abhorrent article I hope never to encounter again.

They are not all mere well recompensed victims of circumstance and your appeals to the contrary shall not convince me otherwise.

I feel quite content to extrapolate my experience of this particular profession thank you very much.
