Who the duck do I vote for?

Hi - I have a dilemma. I can’t morally vote Tory again although it probably on paper is most logical choice for me. I also cannot vote for labour I disagree with at least 3 of their major policies. I could vote locally for Lib Dem but is it worth it? Or just don’t vote? I’m sick to back teeth of lying scumbags running this country. I will never ever forgive the tories for brexit (the biggest mistake of in my lifetime that has robbed our children of opportunity) but I also don’t really agree with a lot of labour policies. Can anyone help?

I don’t know but you’d be quackers to vote Tory

Lockheart · 30/03/2023 22:32

Those aren't the only three options. You can vote for an independent candidate or spoil your ballot if you really can't decide.

Just don't abstain whatever you do. The only wasted vote is the one you don't make.

Hertz101 · 30/03/2023 22:34

@Lockheart what does spoil your ballet actually mean? Thanks

Vote tactically for whoever is most likely to kick/keep the Tories out of your seat.

CatNamedEaster · 30/03/2023 22:35

The Right Honourable J Puddleduck is very big on single parent-family friendly policies I believe.😉

Spoiling a ballot means anything other than putting one cross in one box - for example drawing a picture on it or putting crosses in all the boxes.

For your purposes, you could simply write "none of the above" in large letters across the slip.

It's like registering a protest in a small way. Spoiled ballots are counted but don't impact the outcome. But they're still important because large numbers of them can send a message to the candidates that they're not representing their constituents effectively.

Voter turnout in this country is quite low, usually in the 60%s. Imagine if the 30-40% who don't vote spoiled their ballot with "none of the above".

If you don't vote, you can be safely ignored and political parties can gain power despite only being elected by a minority of the whole population. Always vote, even if you just spoil your ballot.

AuntieSoap · 30/03/2023 22:53

You could vote Lib Dem, and it might be worth it, depends where you live. LDs do quite well in certain local areas.

Badger1970 · 30/03/2023 22:56

Are the Monster Raving Loony Party still going? I think they're probably the best bet if they are.

maddy68 · 30/03/2023 22:57

Vote tactically which ever is best to get the tories out in your area

33goingon64 · 30/03/2023 22:58

Whoever is most likely to beat Tories locally.

SusiePevensie · 30/03/2023 22:59

Vote for whoever is most likely to be the tories in your seat. We can't afford another term of the useless fuckers. They're just incompetent.

Clarinet1 · 30/03/2023 22:59

Whereabouts are you?

moomoomoo27 · 30/03/2023 23:00

I'm voting Green, don't like/agree enough with any of the others any more.

If you normally vote Tory, maybe contact your local Lib Dem candidate and ask them their views on Brexit.

Labour is pro-Brexit. To me it's anti-democratic to accept the results, since the leave campaign was illegal.

Well worth reading the book about Cambridge Analytica.

MakiSushi · 30/03/2023 23:07

Given that I REFUSE to vote for a party that can't define what a woman is I'm not voting for Lib Dems, Greens or Labor. The Scottish Greens are, IMO, complete lunatics.

Tory party can define what a woman is but have pretty much everything else wrong.

I'm therefore voting Alba.

SusiePevensie · 30/03/2023 23:08

Look at it this way - there are tens of millions of people eligible to vote in the UK. No one gets a party that a) matches everything they believe and b) has a cat's chance in hell of being elected.

For example, my 'tax parking quintuple fuel duty, legalise drugs, abolish school uniform and the monarchy plus a lot of more conventional middle of the road stuff' party ain't winning any elections. It would be daft of me to expect that - even though those are all things I think should happen. So I compromise on the least worst option. And that's ok. In fact it's wonderful. There's a Churchill line about democracy being the worst form of government apart from all the others.

Vote for the party most likely to get the Tories out even if you don't agree with all of what they stand for.

Which Labour policies do you disagree with?

Hertz101 · 30/03/2023 23:10

Completely agree - it was a lie from start to finish and it’s not the mega rich that have to deal with it they move - Monaco (ratcliffe) or Singapore (dyson) they all supported brexit then f ed off. Disgrace.

I hate to say it but I felt like it was the older generation have punished the new generation.

I cried on the day on the brexit result and think of myself as European not British.

I have spoiled my vote a few times by writing "none of the above". I really think there should be a box for it.

Hertz101 · 30/03/2023 23:13

@verdantverdure this probably isn’t the right forum but the usual ones that people have an issue with. They are redlines for me. the private school thing is nuts frankly ! I remember Diane abbot sending her kid to private school etc just as hypocritical.

OP posts:
SusiePevensie · 30/03/2023 23:17

Ok. So you think private schools shouldn't have to pay VAT. Fair enough.

Try putting that and the two or three other things you don't agree with Labour about against the immense clusterfuck of uselessness the Tories are deliveri g, from Brexit to a wrecked NHS, from a broken justice system to hundreds of shuttered libraries.

Which do you choose?

ozoruk1 · 30/03/2023 23:19

Before I leave this country permanently I’ve been spoiling my ballot - they do count them - I’d never not vote but I can’t vote for any of this shower of shit.

sallylondon · 30/03/2023 23:20

I’m sick to back teeth of lying scumbags running this country

First job is that we HAVE to get them out before they completely run this country into the ground.
Which, if you live in a Tory-held constituency, might mean gritting your teeth and voting for whoever is mostly likely to be their main opposition in your area. There is no point wasting your vote for a smaller party or an independent candidate unless they have a credible chance. Throw your weight behind the person best placed to beat them.

You might not agree with every policy of theirs but it's a matter of urgency that we have a change of govt soon, or there will be nothing great left in Great Britain.

Yazo · 30/03/2023 23:24

You don't want lying scumbags to run the country yet you don't want to vote for the opposition because of their policies? At the end of the day I'd rather vote labour, policies or not than the Tories where you get rubbish policies and scumbag liars. Vote for who you want, but if you don't vote for labour and Tories get back in then you'll just have to live with it. As for lib Dems, the one and only time I stupidly voted for them, they formed a coalition with the Tories anyway, austerity kicked in and the rest is history.

Hertz101 · 30/03/2023 23:26

@SusiePevensie yeh fair but labour did f all in opposing brexit which perhaps tipped balance? How do I forgive them? How do I forgive them for their previous pockets of anti semitism ? That’s still raw. Dunno it’s tough. Is a lab-lib coalition possible? I actually think that may keep both of them in check?

Keepthetowel · 30/03/2023 23:28

If you are a biological realist you can vote Tory, SDP or communist, my DC works in elections , no one examines or cares about spoilt votes, the candidates don’t read them, they are wasted even as a protest. I think I read on here that the Monster Raving Loony part might be gender critical, one can hope.
