Who the duck do I vote for?

Hi - I have a dilemma. I can’t morally vote Tory again although it probably on paper is most logical choice for me. I also cannot vote for labour I disagree with at least 3 of their major policies. I could vote locally for Lib Dem but is it worth it? Or just don’t vote? I’m sick to back teeth of lying scumbags running this country. I will never ever forgive the tories for brexit (the biggest mistake of in my lifetime that has robbed our children of opportunity) but I also don’t really agree with a lot of labour policies. Can anyone help?

Thank you @saraclara and @verdantverdure 💐

saraclara · 31/03/2023 15:42

No chance, not while they are so anti woman.

The Tories might know what to say to keep GC women onside, but it's the Tories who are anti woman, imo. They've broken maternity services, they've broken chldcare, they've broken schools, they've broken healthcare in general, they've broken pretty much everything that matters to women, especially those with families.

I won't be voting Tory either. I can't vote for a party led by someone who says not all women have penises, has an MP who thinks it's possible to grow a cervix and another MP who wants to 'educate' party members who disagree with her trans ideology and expel them from the party if they don't comply.

None of the parties represent women now.

pointythings · 31/03/2023 16:02

If you want a change of government, the only sensible thing to do is hold your nose and vote tactically. Demanding ideological purity will just land us with another five years of this shitshow.

The electorate in the UK needs to get behind proper PR - that way not only does every vote genuinely matter, we can also have genuine political diversity.

pussycatinfluffyslippers · 31/03/2023 16:07

Locally it matters less, I feel.
I've voted for all 3 main parties in the past.
It completely depends on what their plans are for my local area/town. Currently Labour aren't exactly covering themselves in glory here, so there's a v big chance I'll vote Tory (if I vote).

In a General Election, that's different. No LD candidate last time, straight red/blue battleground (and not much in it).

pointythings · 31/03/2023 16:52

@pussycatinfluffyslippers I'm as anti Brexit as it is possible to be, but in our last local elections I voted for our local Independent because despite his Brexit support, he's actually out there doing stuff for the community - he's made real improvements to community facilities, raised funds for young people, physically got out there and got his hands dirty. Our local Tory (who got in by the skin of his teeth) just puts pretty posts on Facebook and does fuck all.

saraclara · 31/03/2023 00:27

You seem to be looking for things you disagree with, rather than agree with. No one party is going to reflect all your views and opinions exactly.

Even if I agree with all your reasons not to want to vote for each of the other parties (and I do agree with you on some) there are SO many more things that I disagree with in the Tory side, that there's no way I could vote for them. And since, among many other things, they're the party that have let your child down, who on earth would you?

Look at all the parties again and find what you DO agree with or DO like about them, rather than looking for things you don't agree with. Voting for the lying, evil, public services destroying Tories because of single issue concerns with the other parties, makes no sense.

Knowing what a woman is may seem like a single issue, but its really not.
If you think about it a little bit you see
Rape centres
NHS wards
School toilets
Public toilets
Prisons
Your smear test
Sports from grassroots up
The womens institute
Girl guiding and on and on
All of these and more you will be navigating with the added bonus of men who believe they are women too.

Now I realise that torys have not come out and said they will repeal the gender recognition act and beef up the equality act, but at this very moment they know who is a woman and dont ban women from joining their party.
Which is a lot more than labour, green and libdem Democrats who all want to make self id normal.

yoshiblue · 30/03/2023 22:35

Vote tactically for whoever is most likely to kick/keep the Tories out of your seat.

Only necessary if the Tories are in now or likely to get in next time. If not, vote for whoever you want. It's never a wasted vote.

Gwenhwyfar · 31/03/2023 17:02

"Now I realise that torys have not come out and said they will repeal the gender recognition act and beef up the equality act, but at this very moment they know who is a woman and dont ban women from joining their party."

They are the least likely to adequately publicly fund a lot of those things you listed though (except maybe the WI!).

Cornwallinthesun · 31/03/2023 17:02

Do some places have local elections this year? I don't think we do and I have FOMO.

I know people who work for both the hospital and Local Authority and they love Rishi so I'm desperate to vote Lib Dem (our local Labour candidate is not liked at all!!)

Cornwallinthesun · 31/03/2023 17:03

Just checked & no election for us 😭

BloodyHellKen · 31/03/2023 17:06

Keepthetowel · 30/03/2023 23:28

If you are a biological realist you can vote Tory, SDP or communist, my DC works in elections , no one examines or cares about spoilt votes, the candidates don’t read them, they are wasted even as a protest. I think I read on here that the Monster Raving Loony part might be gender critical, one can hope.

@Keepthetowel

That isn't correct. In the UK all votes including the spoilt ones are counted, recorded and reported by law.

Labour might fund them, but they'll be empty, no woman will use any while theres a fair chance of meeting a man in them.

Exactly. We'll be lucky to get as far as an NHS ward, have smear tests or get legal aid to represent women in rape cases (or have rape centres funded at all) under the tories.

verdantverdure · 30/03/2023 23:58

This time @saraclara most "safe" Tory seats are up for grabs.

They are and it gives me hope. I live in one of the most solid Tory seats in the country, the latest polls translate into a 73% chance of them losing it. That put a spring in my step, I can tell you.

I spoilt my paper last time because Jeremy Corbyn, I couldn’t in all conscience vote Labour, pointless though it was anyway. I couldn’t not vote either when women died for my right to do so.

GCAcademic · 31/03/2023 17:21

saraclara · 30/03/2023 23:49

That. I wish my vote made a difference in my oh so Tory constituency. I'd vote for anyone who had the best chance of turfing out a Tory, frankly.

I’m in a constituency where the tory incumbent has a huge majority and the seat has always been conservative. Apparently Labour is projected to comfortably win the seat at the next election, and that’s even with the boundary changes making it more rural (posh rural, rather than the more working type).

saraclara · 31/03/2023 17:21

Ourladycheesusedatum · 31/03/2023 17:08

You're being ridiculous. No women will use an NHS ward? No woman will go for a smear? No woman/girl will use any of those services?

You're so blinkered that you're blind, frankly.

Blossomtoes · 31/03/2023 17:23

This woman will and so will all her friends.

Notnormalami · 31/03/2023 17:34

I'll vote Tory for as long as it takes the other parties to realise centralising gender ideology in schools won't get them votes.

And hang the country?

What are the Tories actually doing that you approve of?

Telling her they know what a woman is. Despite having their own GRA in 2017. And despite having numerous policies that screw over the poorest people in the country, most of whom are women and children.

verdantverdure · 31/03/2023 18:06

Is it really hang the country given the state of global politics and economy? No one from ajy party is going to get us through this mess safely without something going wrong.

Tanith · 31/03/2023 18:13

Op, are you happy with how your own MP is performing?

If he or she is working hard for you and your constituency, then vote for him or her. If not, vote tactically.

MajorCarolDanvers · 31/03/2023 18:14

Spoiled ballots are counted but don't impact the outcome. But they're still important because large numbers of them can send a message to the candidates that they're not representing their constituents effectively

I hate to tell you that candidates and campaigns really don't pay any attention to this.

There are about 5 minutes spent at the count examining spoiled votes to check they really are spoiled. The art work, jokes and obscenities are chuckled over and then no more thought is given to them until the next election.

This from my experience of attending many counts over the last 3 decades.

verdantverdure · 31/03/2023 18:17

We've got a party in power who use everything from a pandemic to HS2, to asylum seekers to funnel taxpayers money to their mates.

Nothing in our county works the way it's supposed to any more.

You can't even be sure of getting an ambulance if you're having a heart attack.

Any other government we've ever had would do a better job.

Any other government on offer would do a better job.

Thank god we didn't have this lot in charge in 2008.
