Who the duck do I vote for?

Hertz101 · 30/03/2023 22:31

Hi - I have a dilemma. I can’t morally vote Tory again although it probably on paper is most logical choice for me. I also cannot vote for labour I disagree with at least 3 of their major policies. I could vote locally for Lib Dem but is it worth it? Or just don’t vote? I’m sick to back teeth of lying scumbags running this country. I will never ever forgive the tories for brexit (the biggest mistake of in my lifetime that has robbed our children of opportunity) but I also don’t really agree with a lot of labour policies. Can anyone help?

Do your Civic Duty and vote but spoil your ballot paper

That is my plan as I don’t trust any party which is sad but very worrying

Spoiled ballots are counted but don't impact the outcome. But they're still important because large numbers of them can send a message to the candidates that they're not representing their constituents effectively

I hate to tell you that candidates and campaigns really don't pay any attention to this.

There are about 5 minutes spent at the count examining spoiled votes to check they really are spoiled. The art work, jokes and obscenities are chuckled over and then no more thought is given to them until the next election.

This from my experience of attending many counts over the last 3 decades.

It doesn’t matter. It solves the problem for someone who has nobody to vote for but whose conscience won’t allow them not to vote at all.

@Blossomtoes

Yes I agree but that wasn't the specific point I was responding to

Labour might fund them, but they'll be empty, no woman will use any while theres a fair chance of meeting a man in them.

This woman will and so will all her friends.

If you and your friends are willing to be examined by a man and have counselling with men if you are ever raped.
Willing to change for swimming with men.
Willing for all young girls to quit sports if they ever even start.
Ok with your mothers having care delivered by men.
Ok for disabled girls having a man doing intimate care.

And on and on

Well you do you.

Blossomtoes · 31/03/2023 20:17

My mother had care delivered by a man. She was absolutely fine with it.
I’ve used mixed changing rooms. No problem.
There’s no reason why a male doctor or counsellor couldn’t be as empathetic and sensitive as a woman if I’m assaulted or raped - after all a male doctor delivered my child.

If the Tories had women’s and children’s interests at heart there wouldn’t be over 4 million children living in poverty. Just because they say they know what a woman is to con single issue feminists into voting for them doesn’t mean they treat us any better.

Talk about speaking from a position of privilege

Endlesssummer2022 · 31/03/2023 20:22

Putting VAT on private school fees is what’s making me waver to be honest. Labour had my vote until that suggestion. If they do that, they will come for private healthcare next.

It may play well to the gallery but I have an issue with targeting individuals rather than making structural changes to find efficiencies or make investments in the state. The answer can’t always be tax individuals more and it feels like this is their plan.

Talk about speaking from a position of privilege

Meaning what exactly?

Notnormalami · 31/03/2023 20:32

Blossomtoes · 31/03/2023 20:30

Meaning what exactly?

Meaning if you can't understand why a woman who has been through sexual trauma may not want a male practitioner of any description anywhere near her speaks volumes.

A male practitioner can be incredibly empathetic and brilliant at his job, but he's still male.

Blossomtoes · 31/03/2023 20:37

You think I’m privileged because I haven’t been raped? Fucking hell.

Notnormalami · 31/03/2023 20:39

That is not what I said.

Cornwallinthesun · 31/03/2023 20:41

Oh my goodness. 😳 here's hoping @Notnormalami doesn't really understand what "privilege" means

Notnormalami · 31/03/2023 20:47

No I understand the meaning. I just feel being in a place where you can judge others for decisions they make about their welfare is a position of privilege, as much of the left are. It can also be applied to the second part of her comment too.

Anecdotally I've found those who claim to advocate for the poor and those in need tend to be people with no real empathy for the situation beyond an anti government agenda.

Blossomtoes · 31/03/2023 20:50

All the judgement is yours @Notnormalami. What you said is disgraceful.

Bully for you. Some of us don’t want to be treated by men. Surely it’s not too difficult for you to understand why a woman who has been raped wouldn’t want to be examined by a man.

Ok so your mother was ok with it, what do we do with the many other women who are not and never will be ok with it?

Here we go. This thread is doomed to be lost to the trans debate.

MarshaBradyo · 31/03/2023 21:18

Women’s rights debate is more apt imo

I’m done with it. I’ve seen some pretty shocking stuff posted in my time on MN but it’s excelled itself on this thread.

Ok lets address cultural needs for sex specific practitioners then, should those be disregarded also?

verdantverdure · 31/03/2023 23:57

@OzziePopPop It's predicted to be pretty close:

Who the duck do I vote for?

You don't have more of a right to choose the sex of your practitioner according to what your culture is. It should be a right for all women or none, or more likely something that can be provided if possible. Already now, I do not think you can choose the sex of your medical practitioners. There was a big poster at the A&E where I live (not UK) telling people they could not choose the sex of their doctor or nurse. It was definitely aimed at a particular community, but held for everyone of course.

I thought it was standard now in the NHS to choose the sex of your healthcare provider if it mattered to you.
Has this been banished and now you have to choose a gender and hope or go without care?
