It’s a shame the flags have been commandeered by the far right and football hooligans, and are even seen as divisive and oppressive in some parts of the UK because we should be proud of them. The Irish flag is friendly and fun and good sportsmanship, and the Greek flag is sun and warmth and welcome, but the English and the British flag which, let’s face it, is really only used by English people and Northern Irish Protestants), and is comes across as aggressive, triumphalist and intimidating. Mind you, that’s what some people like about it. Fill your boots and enjoy, OP.

RoseBucket · 30/03/2023 15:28

A lot of houses near me flew the Ukraine flag, plus yellow ribbons etc for a while, they seems to have stopped. No others I can see.

Anyone who has an England flag hanging out a window all year around is going to be a wrong 'un.

And I'm not a fan of the American obsession with having a stars and stripes outside their homes either, even though it's not associated with yobbo behaviour. That level of patriotism brings me out in hives.

peachescariad · 30/03/2023 15:31

Of course you can if you want to - they are our national flags.

RampantIvy · 30/03/2023 15:34

Quite sad tbh that it could be read so negatively.

I agree. People from other countries are far more patriotic.
And before anyone accused me of being jingoistic, my mum was a refugee, and she was delighted to be granted British citizenship.

KnickerlessParsons · 30/03/2023 15:35

Brefugee · 30/03/2023 14:11

Hmm. Football/rugby/other sporting occasion? sure - for the duration.
Coronation? he's not only the king of England, union Flag in that case
St George's day? yeah, why not?
you're BNP and you don't care who knows it? have at it

tbh i think the cross of St George is a pretty ugly flag. The only flag i really like is the Welsh one and it grieves me that I'm not Welsh so don't ever fly / use one. I do like the Yorkshire flag though and do hang that out on Yorkshire Day (1st August). But tbh if they're out a long time they get tatty so i don't do it much

I give you permission to fly our flag whenever and wherever you like Brefugee.
For 'tis indeed a fine flag, and should be flown as much as possible.❤💚

That's rather naive, isn't it?

It might be a shame that the English flag has been tainted in the way it has...but it has been. It makes a statement. If you want to fly it, make sure you know what statement you are making and what people will make of it.

BasiliskStare · 30/03/2023 15:42

I bought some little union flags for the Queen's jubilee and put them in our window boxes. I would not fly a flag permanently ( and we do not have a flag pole , little terraced house ) but I think either are OK on a nice country celebration. A great shame ( especially the St George's flag ) has been misappropriated by some. But I have seen eg taxis or others sticking one to their aerial during eg football matches or Olympics & that did not seem racist to me.

HamBone · 30/03/2023 15:42

viques · 30/03/2023 15:16

But how many of your neighbours fly the Confederate flag? Because in terms of negative association I think that is on a par with how many people see the St George cross flag in the UK.

I appreciate that, @viques , I’m just saying that it’s a shame that the St. George’s flag has such negative associations nowadays because that’s not how countries’ flags are perceived everywhere.

The flag of a first-world democracy could be perceived as an appreciation of that country, IYSWIM, and I wish there was a way of reversing the current perception.

It’s just a cultural difference, @MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake The US has massive problems, but people appreciate living in a democracy, my Russian neighbors certainly do and they fly the American flag in the summer. 🤷

NeverTrustAPoliceman · 30/03/2023 15:49

I find the noise of flappy bits of fabric annoying, whatever design is printed on them.

WomensLandArmy · 30/03/2023 15:56

Absolutely not. But one does have a flag pole in the garden for suitable occasions...

I get it. I just wouldn't be able to stand it myself. The USA has a bit too much of the ole patriotism going on.

TroysMammy · 30/03/2023 14:15

Isn't it sad that the flag of St George and the Union flag have such negative connotations.

A Welsh Dragon flag displayed in Wales would invoke pride and no one would judge the flag flyer at all.

I was just about to say this. Other nations are so proud of their flags.

idontlikementhols · 30/03/2023 16:01

Chavtastic.

Carlycat · 30/03/2023 16:02

It chavvy and generally associated with football planks

maddy68 · 30/03/2023 16:03

Just horribly tacky

@bizzywiththefizzy Have you seen Scotland's other flag the Rampant lion ? I love that one .

If we combined the standard with the saltire it might almost be as cool as the Vladivostok one, but I think tigers out-cool lions (especially if they're climbing a fucking mountain).

How about a flag with a bear carrying an artillery shell at the Battle of Monte Cassino ?

BlueJellycat · 30/03/2023 17:23

For the coronation, Olympics, queen's funeral it's OK. Football - it's a no from me. We have a flag pole. At the back of the house. My son has many, many flags. But yes, Royal Standard was out the front for queen's funeral. Its just a few days.

DrCoconut · 30/03/2023 17:25

Other than possibly for major events I find displaying flags on domestic premises to be really weird. It's almost an aggressive sign that non members of your "club" aren't welcome.

pishkashante · 30/03/2023 17:32

As an Asian person, when I see any of the flags displayed in homes I do tell myself patriotism is ok, but I do inwardly recoil a bit. I've faced too many aggressions, micro and macro, for me to be sanguine.

This. Very cringe inducing.

Sporting event is fine. Randomly not so much. It has negative connotations unfortunately.
