We put flags up for royal events, but not otherwise.

I do think it is sad (but true) that flying our national flag is seen as a negative.

CurlewKate · 30/03/2023 14:24

Well, I'm posh AF and would rather eat wasps. Does that help?

HamBone · 30/03/2023 14:24

I agree with PP’s that putting out your country’s flag is completely normal in many, many countries and doesn’t have negative connotations.

But in England it does, unfortunately. Perhaps if more people started doing it though, it would gradually lose the negative associations?? I dunno.

Isn't it sad that the flag of St George and the Union flag have such negative connotations.

A Welsh Dragon flag displayed in Wales would invoke pride and no one would judge the flag flyer at all.

It is very sad.

True. Maybe I'll put one up.

SquashPenguin · 30/03/2023 14:27

I’d assume someone liked Tommy Robinson/ Nigel Farage if I saw a St George’s Cross flying. Less so a Union Flag, but it’s still a bit cringe.

Antiquiteas · 30/03/2023 14:29

It’s a bit EDL, rightly or wrongly.

HamBone · 30/03/2023 14:34

I live in a very diverse American city (brought up in England) and you literally see every type of flag here. People will put out countries’ flags to which they have a familial connection, as well as the Stars and Stripes. No one would bat an eyelid if I stuck out a Union Jack/St.George’s and the American flag. It would just signify that we’re a multi-national family. 😂

I found it weird to begin with, but now I rather like seeing them.

WispaBite · 30/03/2023 14:34

If you want to put one up, go for it. I think it's sad that you can't display your own flag without people thinking you're some sort of terrible person.

Mutabiliss · 30/03/2023 14:35

There's a house near us with a St George's cross flying all the time. He also had a huge pro-Brexit banner in 2016, which was absolutely not a surprise. Definitely a BNP-type.

Unfortunately if someone flew it all the time I'd assume they were racist/UKIP-y. Union Jack less so, but still an odd thing to do and very off-putting. During the World Cup/Euros - absolutely fine, though not something I would personally do.

Mochudubh · 30/03/2023 14:36

@Brefugee . "The only flag i really like is the Welsh one and it grieves me that I'm not Welsh so don't ever fly / use one".

Slightly off topic but I can't decide if the Welsh flag is the coolest flag in the world or the flag of Vladivostok. I mean, dragons are cool but a tiger climbing a fucking mountain.................

Emigratingimmigrant · 30/03/2023 14:36

I know people who have their national flags in windows.
Even as an immigrant here, I don't find St George's flag displayed automatically bad.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 30/03/2023 14:36

Generally speaking, I feel like displaying your own flag in your own country during peace time is a bit of a red flag.

Mumsafan · 30/03/2023 14:37

Yerroblemom1923 · 30/03/2023 14:08

It's a no no. Unless you're a member of the BNP/Britain First/Tommy Robinson etc. It's also chavvy as so.... just no.

This.

Livinginanotherworld · 30/03/2023 14:38

BNP ?

Brefugee · 30/03/2023 14:39

OMG @Mochudubh I need one of those!!!

BMW6 · 30/03/2023 14:40

I wish more people would display the England flag so we can reclaim it from the knuckle daggers.

Whatsshecalled · 30/03/2023 14:40

It's a real shame that those 2 flags now have these connotations, but I would definitely assume you had far right/racist beliefs and would avoid you. Not the same with other flags, I don't know how we got here.

TrashyPanda · 30/03/2023 14:40

Very common to see Union Jacks in parts of Northern Ireland.

LadyWindermeresOnlyFans · 30/03/2023 14:40

It shouldn't but those flags both do have negative connotations unfortunately. I feel lucky to have been born here with all of its comparable comforts and privileges, and I don't particularly want to live anywhere else. But I don't feel like I want to make a big statement about it, which I think is what a flag does, because i don't feel that a flag represents me. And they're ugly. As PP have said, if there was a dragon involved, I'd be swathed in it!

bizzywiththefizzy · 30/03/2023 14:41

Brefugee · 30/03/2023 14:11

Hmm. Football/rugby/other sporting occasion? sure - for the duration.
Coronation? he's not only the king of England, union Flag in that case
St George's day? yeah, why not?
you're BNP and you don't care who knows it? have at it

tbh i think the cross of St George is a pretty ugly flag. The only flag i really like is the Welsh one and it grieves me that I'm not Welsh so don't ever fly / use one. I do like the Yorkshire flag though and do hang that out on Yorkshire Day (1st August). But tbh if they're out a long time they get tatty so i don't do it much

Have you seen Scotland's other flag the Rampant lion ? I love that one .

Brefugee · 30/03/2023 14:43

up until the men's football world cup was held in Germany there were very few German flags around except on official buildings etc. There was a reluctance - despite the fact that this isn't the national flag that was around pre 1945 - to even hint at any sort of national pride for fear of it being seen as nationalism.

But then the world cup happened and two things became obvious. The non Germans among us hung our own flags out of our windows, and so on. Then a few Germans did it too, and shops had displays of merch and so on. And suddenly we were awash in black-red-gold and it has obviously calmed right down, but whenever there are tournaments, olympics etc, a lot of them come out again (except for the last world cup, even the few shops that had Coca-cola promotions took them down after the first week). And all the other nationalities cheerfully hang out their flags too, or on their own national days.

We're currently awash with a lot of Ukranian flags, and an occasional defiant Russian flag (but not many)

Brefugee · 30/03/2023 14:44

yep, love that one too. But. Dragons (although i do like that the Scottish coat of arms has a unicorn)

bignope · 30/03/2023 14:45

I'd never do it but I'm not the patriotic, flag shagging type.

I'm also not an attention seeker so don't really feel the need to display stuff on my house, put red noses on my car etc

It's all a bit naff and I realise that probably makes me a snob.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 30/03/2023 14:47

In MN world you would be deemed to be an absolute racist if you did this. I think it's fine for football tournaments (St George's flag) but bit chavvy for every day. It's a shame as nearly every other country is proud to fly its own flag but it appears to be something to be ashamed of in England.
