Just no specific reason whatsoever

Just lazy journalist fodder. 'The MN demographic'? Really?

MrsTerryPratchett · 30/03/2023 14:49

If people want to reclaim it, there are ways. Have bunting with all the national flags. Fly it along with sufferette colours. Get English designers to reclaim it like they did with the Union Flag.

But at the moment, it screams racist.

It is a shame it's not like other flags. But if you let zeig heiling skinheads drape themselves in it while they proudly march around drunk and violent, you aren't Canada or Sweden.

Have you seen Scotland's other flag the Rampant lion ? I love that one .

I just like the idea of having an alternative flag you can use when there's a colour clash, sort of like how football teams have second and third choice kits. Perhaps the other home nations could get second flags, then England and Norn Iron could both get flags that actually look good, and Wales could get one that doesn't look like a commemorative tea towel.

They do use national flags of their country everywhere in their marches though. I don't think there is a European national flag or emblem which hasn't been flown on neo nazi rallies in Europe

If anyone does go ahead with this, remember to take it down on Prince Andrew's birthday! 🙂

7Worfs · 30/03/2023 14:58

Flags belong on flag poles, not windows.
I like county flags, in a pinch the family standard will do.

Vegetus · 30/03/2023 14:59

A neighbour of mine has a flag pole and quite often will be flying a union flag or st georges cross. He's the nicest neighbour I've ever known so I personally wouldn't judge anyone for flying a flag.

Tiani4 · 30/03/2023 15:05

Temporarily

  • to show support for the national team on a big sports event - rugby, football, hockey, olympics, ..- great to celebrate and wish them well
  • for coronation or royal family event- super to join and celebrate the event

Permanent Union Jack draped in a residential home window however ?- Usually signals it's the local National Front branch for that town or someone involved in it. Has a different connotation

They're not captured to the same extent. Since really the 70s, I remember skinheads using them.

In every positive context really the Union Flag is used so the George Cross for a long time was code for someone so xenophobic they even hated their own country people (Scots, Welsh and NI).

If we combined the standard with the saltire it might almost be as cool as the Vladivostok one, but I think tigers out-cool lions (especially if they're climbing a fucking mountain).

I live in a very diverse American city (brought up in England) and you literally see every type of flag here. People will put out countries’ flags to which they have a familial connection, as well as the Stars and Stripes. No one would bat an eyelid if I stuck out a Union Jack/St.George’s and the American flag. It would just signify that we’re a multi-national family. 😂

I found it weird to begin with, but now I rather like seeing them.

But how many of your neighbours fly the Confederate flag? Because in terms of negative association I think that is on a par with how many people see the St George cross flag in the UK.
