Courgette on a roast dinner

Had a lovely day out with relatively new partner yesterday (8 months, live together) got home and he said go chill in the bath I'll cook a roast dinner.

I'm thinking, this is pretty cool. Come down later to be handed a roast chicken dinner. Comprised of roasties, chicken, Yorkshire, leeks, parnips, carrots, stuffing and a small pile of salty green mush.

I'm like, err, is this leek a different way? He's like try it..it's courgette.

YANBU - absolutely no courgette mush on a roast.
YABU - he cooked you a roast fgs.

Yeah you can't complain when someone else has done all that cooking.

Pinkplasticbathcup · 27/03/2023 11:28

I’d think it was weird, but I’d try it to be polite. Plus I’d be happy to be cooked a roast!! Was it nice?

ObamaLlamas · 27/03/2023 11:29

Just a different type of veg. I bloody love corgette so I'd like that, veg is just veg. Sounds lush anyway.

SherbertDabs · 27/03/2023 11:29

I don't think it's the strangest roast dinner veg. Sweetcorn far worse!

Monsteraobliqua · 27/03/2023 11:32

I'd have been rightly and genuinely appreciative to his face after such a lovely gesture but internally a bit 'courgettes?!!'. Did he say he includes them regularly or just had some to use up? They don't taste strongly of much so no big deal but a bit watery and summery to go with gravy etc.

dietcokelime · 27/03/2023 11:32

LTB!

What's next?! Aubergine??

SecondhandMuck · 27/03/2023 11:33

We all have our quirks when it comes to a roast dinner. I think it's weird when people pair cauliflower cheese with their roast dinner so I wouldn't be too shocked at some lil ole courgette making an appearance.

SecondhandMuck · 27/03/2023 11:33

'chill in the bath whilst I make you a roast' sounds 10/10 though.

MyBloodyMaryneedsmoreTabasco · 27/03/2023 11:33

Some vegetables do not belong on the same plate as gravy. Courgette is one of them.

ArcticBells · 27/03/2023 11:35

He cooked , that's all that matters!

HealthyFats · 27/03/2023 11:38

I think it sounds quite nice, although sadly you have to LTB anyway for doing Yorkshire pudding with chicken.

Dammitthisisshit · 27/03/2023 11:39

Bleugh to salty green mush of courgette.

But as you had 3 other veg, and roasties, and even Yorkshire pudding then I say he still did well so have voted YABU!

GoodChat · 27/03/2023 11:39

I'd phone the police. Emergency number, obviously.

PaperwhiteTheGhost · 27/03/2023 11:41

My MIL puts peppers on her roasts.

Peppers.

They're even served in a separate bowl because SIL hates them.

PEPPERS!!!!!

TrishTrix · 27/03/2023 11:43

You need a green veg. So why not courgette.

(My family usually has broccoli)

whenever there's a thread about eating your 5 a day some people will post 'I always include peppers and corn on the cob and turnip' when I cook a roast dinner. They should be on a register quite frankly.

harriethoyle · 27/03/2023 11:48

I absolutely love courgettes and would saute them with chilli and garlic on a roast chicken dinner, or lamb. Not beef or pork though.

Planesmistakenforstars · 27/03/2023 11:48

I'm torn OP. He did cook you a roast. But courgettes are not acceptable. If there was enough gravy then I might let it go, otherwise look out for other red flags, such as peppers.

courgettes and lamb definitely go together. very Greek pairing.

Cigarettesaftersex1 · 27/03/2023 11:50

I'm on the fence, absolutely he cooked you a roast but no, courgettes do not belong on a roast dinner...neither do leeks

MarchMadness23 · 27/03/2023 11:51

You can have my chicken & I'll have your courgettes!!

and the PP can give me her Yorkshire's if she's that upset at being served them with chicken!

I wonder if he intended them to be mush though, and if so (or not even) I wonder how he cooked them? With a fussy I've have roasted them.

He sounds like a keeper, but maybe you need a 'fussy dinner to me is..' conversation. He might feel equally unhappy if you add or omit one of his items that makes a roast a roast.

CC4712 · 27/03/2023 11:51

Was the rest of the meal nice? Sounds delicious to me. I sometimes add steamed courgette or grated/steamed with parmesan on top to a meal- even a roast. That courgette sounds overcooked though.

oddwellingtonboots · 27/03/2023 11:54

Drip feed incoming...

He did not roast the parsnips. They were just boiled then kinda lightly fried.

midlifecrash · 27/03/2023 11:55

Why was it mushy? Sounds boiled to a pulp. That’s no way to treat a courgette!

DrMarciaFieldstone · 27/03/2023 11:55

Courgettes dipped in egg, then Panko breadcrumbs then put in the oven are an amazing addition to roast dinner.
