Courgette on a roast dinner

oddwellingtonboots · 27/03/2023 11:24

Had a lovely day out with relatively new partner yesterday (8 months, live together) got home and he said go chill in the bath I'll cook a roast dinner.

I'm thinking, this is pretty cool. Come down later to be handed a roast chicken dinner. Comprised of roasties, chicken, Yorkshire, leeks, parnips, carrots, stuffing and a small pile of salty green mush.

I'm like, err, is this leek a different way? He's like try it..it's courgette.

YANBU - absolutely no courgette mush on a roast.
YABU - he cooked you a roast fgs.

whenever there's a thread about eating your 5 a day some people will post 'I always include peppers and corn on the cob and turnip' when I cook a roast dinner. They should be on a register quite frankly.

She does sweetcorn too.

She is lovely on the surface but clearly a psycho underneath.

MaltedCow · 27/03/2023 11:57

We use whatever is in season with our roasts to change them up a bit and keep the children interested in veg. Sounds like the courgette was overcooked though. I'd be grateful to have been made a roast.

Pootles34 · 27/03/2023 11:58

Frankly, OP, that is the worst drip feed I've ever seen on MN, and I've been on here over a decade.

Barold · 27/03/2023 12:00

Absolutely not. However, he sounds lovely so I think we should let him off.

Sistanotcista · 27/03/2023 12:00

He was cooking - he did it his way. When you cook, do it your way. Both work. You are not unreasonable to prefer your way (I think we all do!), but you are VVU if you complained after someone sent you off to relax whilst they cooked dinner.

GalileoHumpkins · 27/03/2023 12:00

How long were you in the bath that he'd managed to cook a roast dinner?
Courgette is fine but not if it's a pile of salty mush.

Absolutely for dramatic effect #sorrynotsorry

There should be a 'change my vote' button.

Wouldn't be my first choice, but I'd give it ago if someone else had been trying to make the effort. Did he orginally plan to cook a roast on that day? If not, might be he had some things in and courgette was the nearest thing he could add.

If you end up being together long term, I guess you can sometimes do roast dinners your way, or if you're buying ingredients for him to cook a roast, just happen to buy broccoli/peas whatever for a change!

Seeline · 27/03/2023 12:10

Sounds as though he needs to learn how to cook them - courgettes should not be mushy! But no problem with the being part of a roast.

Yorkshires with chicken though 😱😱!!

You can change your vote on AIBU. I do it all the time.

I love courgettes A courgette puree would go well with roast chicken

PleaseJustText · 27/03/2023 12:17

Think he just needs to learn to cook courgette. I cook mine on a griddle with olive oil and salt until they're well caramelised. It's delicious.

Aaron95 · 27/03/2023 12:30

Courgette with a roast is fine,. But for the love of the wee man don't cook them to mush. Cook them fast so they retain their texture.

Phos · 27/03/2023 12:31

I love courgettes, I'd definitely have them on a roast dinner. I'd cook them properly so they weren't "salty green mush" though.

ChairOfInvisibleStudies · 27/03/2023 12:43

I like courgettes with a roast chicken in the summer, less keen at other times of the year. They shouldn't be cooked to a mush though - sautéed or griddled with garlic and basil, or roasted with cherry tomatoes and thyme, or lightly steamed and dressed with lemon juice and black pepper. All delicious and summery!

courgettes and lamb definitely go together. very Greek pairing.

Definitely not a Greek pairing

BrainOnFire · 27/03/2023 12:52

I know a family who has baked beans with their Sunday roast Shock

ODFOx · 27/03/2023 12:54

Yorkshire pudding with roast chicken?
LTB!!!Grin

EyesOnThePies · 27/03/2023 12:54

Courgettes don’t go with any gravy-blessed dinner.

But if I did find courgettes alongside my roast I would tactfully gloss over their gatecrashing.

DoubleShotEspresso · 27/03/2023 12:55

Firstly he cooked which DP here is yet to do in 15 years ...

Secondly and quite seriously any green veg is great and much needed. Sorry OP but YAB a tad U.

She's unreasonable because he cooked her some crap food and your DP doesn't cook? Maybe raise your bar. You don't have to accept crap because 'at least you tried'. It's strategic incompetence.

or maybe the man just likes courgette with his roast dinner. not everything is some sneaky ploy

GoodChat · 27/03/2023 13:17

@SecondhandMuck maybe he does - and to be fair I don't have an issue with the OP's DP because he sounds like a nice guy with a god awful taste preference, but I do with women who say "well at least he tried; my DP has never cooked for me"

Lulu2171 · 27/03/2023 13:17

It's a bit weird I agree, but not an abomination.

Yorkshires with anything other than beef though.....he's clearly a wrong un.
