MNetters obsession with weight and dress size

Why are MN posters so obsessed with weight and dress size?

There have recently been quite a lot of weight related threads.

Depressing to see that women are still very much judged on appearance and body size. I couldn't care less what size you are or how much you weigh. Just be a decent, kind person.

No fat shaming or body shaming from me.

This is such a bitter and jealous thread

Not that it's relevant but I'm normal BMI and very fitness-focussed.
Nevertheless I live with the damage caused by the toxic, judgemental attitudes to food comsumption that caused me to have an eating disorder and a poor relationship with food for many years.

Unlike you though I'm self-aware enough not to project it outwards and perpetuate the damage.

Yes there's clearly a public health issue with obesity and metabolic health disorders at present but that's really just an excuse for some posters to be unpleasant.

I don't remember that (and to be honest, I'm not sure it would have been genuine), but the overeating threads, to me, generally seem like a bit of a joke with an awareness that it isn't good for you (which, of course, is one reason why it's fun). There was a thread about crisps a while back and far from being virtuous, it was a bit of a self-conscious indulgence of guilty pleasure. Certainly nothing serious in it about how terrible people who don't eat crisps are.

No I completely agree that it may well have not been genuine.

But what was alarmingly genuine was the amount of people who thought it was ok.

Ah, don't encourage him.

@ReneBumsWombats try harder at what?

I should not have to defend my healthy body and food choices to people who are overweight or obese. This thread is designed to make slim people feel bad. It's goady and nasty.

No one is asking you to defend your body. If you think this is goady and nasty, try being a fat person on one of the millions of other threads that OP was referring to.

Oh. And I have healthy food choices and am obese. Bet you spontaneously combust at that thought.

It’s unhealthy and disordered. A child needs more than that!

ghostyslovesheets · 26/03/2023 16:03

@Bellasocks are you assuming everyone agreeing with the OP is obese? Do you read peoples posts?

It's possible to be not obese and still see this skewed 'self control' 'shovelling food' 'Kate Moss as a role model' stuff as harmful - to emotional health, self esteem and physical health - to all women not just overweight ones.

Bellasocks · 26/03/2023 16:04

The fact that you think being obese is healthy @BeretRaspberry is actually laughable. But also very very sad. No I don't combust but I do pity your self delusion.

FrostyFifi · 26/03/2023 16:04

Also eating 1000 calories a day or less is not anorexic. It's a choice to maintain a slim figure

Assuming you're not a troll, enjoy your future osteoporosis.

Yes - a choice to stay slim rather than nourish your body and maintain it's long term health - which is not healthy thinking - it's rigid and must be exhausting

Bellasocks · 26/03/2023 16:07

My diet is excellent. Full of protein and healthy fats. I train 6 days a week as a swimmer and have a professional nutional and swimming coach. But thanks for your concerns.

Bless you. No need to pity me. And I think you’re the one with laughable opinions and delusions. It must be the lack of nourishment that’s addled your brain.

The issue is the millions of threads where a poster will say they’re insert perfectly healthy weight for height

there will follow 30 pages of posters head tilting and saying well I’m the same height as you o/p, and i’d feel huge/like a whale/flabby at that weight. Or i’m 6 inches taller and 2 stone less and I need to lose a stone because I’m definitely chubby.

then the you can’t possibly be a size 10 at 9st o/p brigade chip in with their “vanity sizing” and really they must be a 14 and in denial.

there’s no need. Why the pile on about how huge someone must be if they’re 9st at 5’4?

then the posters telling that perfectly healthy weight person that maybe they should cut carbs and then they’d lose weight.

why can’t people just say yes that’s a healthy weight for your size o/p and leave it there? Why do they have to pile on with how much less they weigh?

Fifi1010 · 26/03/2023 16:12

Bellasocks · 26/03/2023 15:34

I'm not sure about missing the point but this thread is coming across as bitter about people who have self control with their diet and not wanting to be large.
I do not under eat but I refuse to shovel food into myself to become fat. It's as simple as that.

What a bizarre attitude so anyone who disagrees must be fat and lack self control?

Do your coaches agree that 1000 cals a day is perfectly adequate to maintain a slim figure?

p.s if you are a serious swimmer body fat makes you more buoyant so it’s actually advantageous - see rebecca Adlington. She got so much stuck for being “fat” but didn’t stop her getting olympic medals.

9 stone and a height of 5'4 is a BMI of 21.5 and perfectly healthy. That's scary

Don't worry, it's not happening. No proper nutritionist would tell a serious, six times a week swimmer to live on 1000 calories a day and no serious, six times a week swimmer could maintain their regime on it. Hell, nobody like that who wanted to make a point of it would have waited so long to tell us! That's the problem with "seat of your pants" characterisation.

But that one did actually make me laugh, so thanks, "Bella". That's what I was after.

@Lastnamedidntstick i agree with your post completely.

My objection is the fact that slim people are being called anorexic or have disordered eating. This thread has become a slag off anyone who dares to be under a size 12 and label every size 8 or 6 person an anorexic. That is what is being done here and it reeks of bitterness and pure bitchiness.

Bellasocks · 26/03/2023 16:19

I eat 1000 calories 4 days before competitions. I level at 1500 to 1800.Not that I should have to again defend myself.

I couldn’t care less what other people weigh, but personally I feel like crap if I’m overweight so yeah I’m obsessed with my own weight & dress size
