MNetters obsession with weight and dress size

Why are MN posters so obsessed with weight and dress size?

There have recently been quite a lot of weight related threads.

Depressing to see that women are still very much judged on appearance and body size. I couldn't care less what size you are or how much you weigh. Just be a decent, kind person.

No fat shaming or body shaming from me.

To quote Kate Moss:

"Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels"

Food for thought for @pagopago and all the other fat apologists on this thread.

Ha - I mean you are trolling but osteoporosis, stomach ulcers, heart disease and recurrent miscarriage taste great! asshat

Emma's contribution to another thread about weight. One trick pony trip trapping under the bridge...

You would do well to consider this

CruCru · 26/03/2023 15:12

Yeah, I find this a bit weird. I suspect that it’s related to MN posters being (on the whole) more educated and middle class than the general population. I remember a book from a while ago where the main character telling her brother that, in a supposedly “flat” society, being in good shape is a real indicator of class. Hence a bunch of people telling others that being a UK size 12 is huge.

A few years ago there were a few threads about vanity sizing in children’s clothes. In particular there were posters saying that “generous cut” sizing should be banned as it was contributing to the number of obese children. No thought to the poor kids who didn’t quite fit in the age 9 (or whatever) school trousers.

ghostyslovesheets · 26/03/2023 15:15

also Kate Moss kept her size zero by chain smoking and cocaine - very healthy that!

Oh yeah, that great philosopher Kate Moss. Wink She's soooo wise and intelligent, and we should all listen to her. Make sure you stay skinny, as being skinny feels better than ANYTHING you can eat.

Seriously?

Exactly.

Like that sincere poster and real woman Emmalj65. Anyone who calls themselves Emma is totally for real.

I know I shouldn't have responded but sometimes I feel the need to let them know they need to up their game.

Fifi1010 · 26/03/2023 15:19

MN is a more middle class forum , many of the upper classes are very thin. It's a status symbol for some as it signifies wealth and self control. They have money to eat a healthy nutritious diet and a lot of free time to exercise. Previously in olden times plump women were more desired as they obviously were wealthy if they had an abundance of food.

This is the kind of shit we're talking about.

Why on earth would you think this is an inspirational quote? Why in earth would Cocaine Kate be a role model to anyone?

MissLucyLiu · 26/03/2023 15:24

This is MN. Weight is one of the biggest issues that faces women in their mid ages. This is a platform that offers other women who faces a similar concern. Stop criticising other people for what they are working on and find yourself something else to be concerned of that has a positive effect.

SpreadableCheeseOnEverything · 26/03/2023 15:26

Competitive under eating has always been a thing on here. I remember a very frequent poster a few years ago regularly gleefully saying she weighed less than 7 stone but 'wasn't skinny' and claiming a snack was a bit of a biscuit and that her evening meal was just small tastes of the food she was cooking for her family.

DerekFaker · 26/03/2023 15:28

Are some people deliberately missing the point here?

Kitcaterpillar · 26/03/2023 15:31

It's been completely out of hand this week. It's felt like every other thread in active has been weight related.

The patriarchy doesn't need to keep women down, MN posters have it covered.

Bellasocks · 26/03/2023 15:34

I'm not sure about missing the point but this thread is coming across as bitter about people who have self control with their diet and not wanting to be large.
I do not under eat but I refuse to shovel food into myself to become fat. It's as simple as that.

FrostyFifi · 26/03/2023 15:34

Yeah women that have sod all else to worry about.

Prime example of what this thread is discussing - words like 'shovel food' and 'self control' - worrying disordered food thinking

No bitterness here - just a lifetime of food issues due to thinking just like that - and health issues

ReneBumsWombats · 26/03/2023 15:41

Was someone trying to make you?

FrostyFifi · 26/03/2023 15:42

So don't then?

FrostyFifi · 26/03/2023 15:42

There's quite a few posters rocking up now to prove the point in the OP quite nicely.

ghostyslovesheets · 26/03/2023 15:43

My sister went from a size 8 to an 18 due to the side effects of her anti psychotic medication - but again 'fat' women are only ever fat because they shovel food and lack 'self control'

Bellasocks · 26/03/2023 15:48

Having self control over yourself and your body does not equal anorexia.
So many posters here are trying to put the blame on slim people accusing them of eating disorders. It's so nasty. If I want to maintain a size 8 body I will eat the amount of calories to do that. Calling me anorexic is projecting your own issues.
This is such a bitter and jealous thread.

Just as competitive over eating always has to be fair.

I remember a few years back, a poster starting a thread crowing about having eaten 48 Cadbury Creme Eggs in a weekend, and the amount of people who thought there was nothing wrong with that was mind boggling.

I don't remember that (and to be honest, I'm not sure it would have been genuine), but the overeating threads, to me, generally seem like a bit of a joke with an awareness that it isn't good for you (which, of course, is one reason why it's fun). There was a thread about crisps a while back and far from being virtuous, it was a bit of a self-conscious indulgence of guilty pleasure. Certainly nothing serious in it about how terrible people who don't eat crisps are.

Bellasocks · 26/03/2023 15:56

@ReneBumsWombats try harder at what?

I should not have to defend my healthy body and food choices to people who are overweight or obese. This thread is designed to make slim people feel bad. It's goady and nasty.
