MNetters obsession with weight and dress size

pagopago · 25/03/2023 21:11

Why are MN posters so obsessed with weight and dress size?

There have recently been quite a lot of weight related threads.

Depressing to see that women are still very much judged on appearance and body size. I couldn't care less what size you are or how much you weigh. Just be a decent, kind person.

No fat shaming or body shaming from me.

Loads of fat people in the 80s. My mother was on Weight Watchers, so were most of her friends. Diet industry did a roaring trade.

I remember my mum’s friend used to go and the got a black mark (sticker) in their book if they put weight on!

DeeCeeCherry · 26/03/2023 19:26

I just saw yet another fat-shaming thread disguised as should NHS be responsible for obesity, which is a pretty odious question anyway. Of course the obsessives are out in full gleeful force with their pompous/scornful/smug attitude. Sometimes I wonder if it's all really about horrid women wanting to undermine other women in order to feel better about whatever's missing in their own lives. It's pretty hard to scroll past when you notice yet another thread title along same vein. There are so many nowadays

There are certainly a lot of women who like to food and fat shame.

However, we've had an influx lately of MRA/incel types, and they have probably studied us enough to know our hot button issues. Quite a few ridiculous posts from people who were sure to give themselves feminine names...

I suspect you're at least partly right

Me and my PCOS and stage 3 lipoedema were told to put down the fork! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

I literally can't believe people are that thick - I often wonder how they manage to get out if bed and function if they're operating at that level......

I've never, ever, ever heard a woman use that phrase.

Just saying.

Nopinnogin · 26/03/2023 19:52

I don’t fat shame. But a couple of people have suggested nicely that I could lose a little recently instead of pretending I look great and I am now making an effort.

I am kind of grateful to them as I am pretty unhappy at this weight. Would this approach work for everyone? No. It was the kick up the bum I needed to stop over eating and not caring how I look.

Weddingpuzzle · 26/03/2023 19:54

I wish people would focus more on baseline health than weight and dress size. I regularly walk up mountains. I need to eat and drink a certain amount to fuel my activity level as it is higher than the average person my age (43) according to Samsung Health. I eat around 1600-2000 calories. If I eat less and walk 15km I feel ill. I gauge my input based on my output.

The kg's I weigh and the dress size I wear tell me absolutely nothing about my hearts ability to beat consistently at 150bpm, my lungs ability to get enough oxygen in and my legs ability to get up that incline. People who only focus on BMI, scale numbers etc don't seem to know their bodies or the science of health that well. Nobody can see how fat is accumalating round organs just by external presentation. You might be 9 stone but if you can't walk up a hill your vital organs are not healthy. 'Fat' as an organ gets a bad rap. It isn't the bastard everyone thinks it is.

BeretRaspberry · 26/03/2023 19:56

Just thinking out loud. What also baffles me is that we’re always told we’re getting bigger overall, yet we’re living longer than ever!

I do see the funny side 😂

I'm blessed/cursed with the ability to remember conversations in specific detail (not faces or names mind you) and all this sort of rubbish swills round my head and keeps me awake sometimes. Aaarrrgghh.

Weird, I am exactly the same - I remember conversations in great detail but am not good at remembering names or recognising people.

I often hear people completely contradict themselves from what they said the previous day/week. But it’s not very socially acceptable to point it out 😂

There were those awful 'Show then you're a Slimcea girl' adverts in the 1960s and 1970s.

Slimcea was air bread wasn’t it? I remember buying one cal pop as a skinny teen so as not to gain weight. Luckily at that point that was pretty much all I did in terms of dieting.

UpperLowerMiddleClass · 26/03/2023 18:59

In terms of whether people were generally slimmer overall make in ‘the day’ (whenever that was) I think one thing that has changed is the expectation on women to look young for longer. And part of this is maintaining a low weight.

My impression is that a couple of generations ago there was pressure to some extent for young women to be slim but that once you were forties and middle aged and had probably had a few kids there wasn’t a strong expectation to look as slim as you were in your twenties.

Whereas nowadays, and in particular on some of these mumsnet threads, women in their forties and older have the expectation that they could / should have the same body they had in their twenties. Which is often only going to be achievable by strict never ending dieting.

This is a really good point. Possibly also tied to older first time parenthood - in previous generations there'd be a lot more 40-50yo grandmothers, whereas a lot of us still have small kids at that age now.

Crikeyalmighty · 26/03/2023 20:26

I have seen some very odd responses on many threads- lots of competitive undereating and having a go at others diets that are very healthy indeed.

And our friend Emma, who did a plop 'n' run, and Bella, the competitive swimmer who trains six times a week on 1000 calories a day.

So I've got a weight watchers advert banner at top of page! Lucky me! I honestly think doing weight watchers at 14 what messed me up in first place! And if I could go back to my 14 self I would tell her to trust myself and tell the diet culture to do one! 😡

ReneBumsWombats · 26/03/2023 22:19

Bella the 1000 calorie conpetitive lady swimmer just tried to restart the argument, claiming everyone hates him for being slim. Thread pulled for being a TAAT.

In case anyone was still inclined to take him seriously...

pncr · 26/03/2023 22:22

Oh. This is the thread that Bella was complaining about.

There's no way anyone who is competitively doing any sport is doing that on 1000 calories a day and staying healthy.

Many sportsmen and women are obese by BMI.
